To Stire or To Shake

A question that usually rise is whether to stir or to shake. Whatever you choose, both are important in the process.

Shaking chills, and dilutes the liquor slightly making it a bit softer and more welcome to drink. Stirring keeps the clearness of the martini, which some people enjoy.

However, I really like my martinis shaked, and not just for the great sound it makes! I enjoy the tiny pieces of ice that are created on a martini that is properly shaken.

Making a classic martini is simple to do. Take a gin and a dab of vermouth; the ratio should be around 15 to 1, however for a strong drink the ratio might be increased to 20 to 1.

After you have stirred (or shaken) the spirits together, the mixture of spirits could be strained into a glass and an olive could be added. A rule is that there should never be an piece of onion placed in a martini. If there's a piece of onion in it, then it's called a Gibson drink.

Gimlet

This martini recipe's like the Gibson however it need lime juice rather than onion juice. The easy way to remember this difference that since Gibson has O in it, it needs an onion. Gimlet, however, has an L in it.

1/4oz lime juice.

2 1/2oz gin or vodka based off your perference.

Stir or Shake cold, strain into martini glasses and decorate with a lime wedge. I found that an old school cocktail drinks as if Rose's lime juice.

Where as some others like some fresh lime juice. However there's no wrong or right, it is about how you enjoy it.

Smokey Martini

Dab of blended scotch - this is to substitute for the dry vermouth. I believe it is common to make this with Laphroaig scotch since it usually has a smoky flavor.

2 1/2oz gin

Stir or shake cold ingredients and strain into martini glasses. Decorate with a lemon twist.

Chocolate Martini (non-liquor drink)

First, you need to line the edge of the martini glass with either sugared cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, or with grated chocolate slivers mixed with.

Refrigerate until it is ready to serve.

Next, you need to place a piece of chocolate at the bottom of the martini glass.

Here's are a few recipes to try:

1-1/2 ounces of some champagne or maybe sparkling apple juice2 ounces of melted chocolate (or some chocolate sauce)1 ounce 50-50 cream

or...

1-1/2 ounces of chocolate1 ounce of some kind of soda pop drink2 ounces of some coconut cream

Combine all the virgin chocolate martini ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake and then pour into the chilled cocktail glass.

Some chocolate martini variations are including: add a 1/4 tsp of vanilla or some other flavors like almond extract or orange concentrate.

BlueBerry Martini with Lemon

1.5 fluid ounce jigger limoncello

1.5 fluid ounce jigger blueberry vodka

2 tablespoons fresh blueberries

1.5 fluid ounce jigger vanilla vodka

Fill up a martini shaker with some ice. Pour in the blueberry vodka, limoncello, and vanilla vodka. Shake and strain into a cold martini glass and decorate with fresh blueberries.
