How to Prepare for a Hurricane

Don't be caught off guard
After growing up on the shores of the Atlantic in Southeast Georgia it is safe to say that I have spent many hours in front of the television watching and wondering will I be affected by the coming storm that is tearing it's way through. Thankfully, I'm nestled in the little crook above the Florida, Georgia border and it seems like if the storm either attacks Florida or bounces on to the Carolina's. But, Still being prepared for a hurricane is no laughing joke for there is always the chance that one day our luck will run out and we will become the victim of a disaster.
During Hurricane season, which runs from June to November, Everyone should take the time to prepare their selfs for possible power outages or evacuations. Don't be caught off guard. Having Items that prepare us for such storms are easily replaceable and can be used for any emergency situation.
Some Items that you should keep on hand during these stormy months are; Bottled Water, Flashlights, Batteries, candles, Non-electrical can opener, portable radio, non perishable food items.
How to Prepare for the storm
If a storm is approaching and you think you may be affected, you won't to make sure you are prepared. Here are a few tips that might make things a little easier for you and your family. Make sure that you have things done in a timely manner so that if you have to be evacuated you don't have to worry about not being able to get out in time.
Have a Hurricane Survival Kit. Purchase a good size tote, one that will be able to be easily lifted and fit into your automobile. Put in some batteries, flashlights, first aid kit, non-electrical can opener, wet wipes, germ-x, trash bags, etc.
Make sure you have a full tank of gas. If possible carry an extra can of gasoline so that if you run into a situation where you can not get any for a while.
Make sure you have Insurance and other personal papers. These Items could be placed into a plastic bag or container and put into your survival kit.
Make sure your home is secured with plywood and tie downs.
Make sure you have enough water for atleast two weeks.
Buy foods that require no refrigeration and little prepareness.
Make sure your animals are protected and have enough food.
Make sure that you have all your medications and personal items.
You should evacuate if told to do so. But if your not able to leave here are a few tips for you to follow;
Stay inside, away from windows and doors.
Close all interior doors and brace the exterior doors.
Keep window blinds and curtains closed.
Stay in a small room, closet, or hallway on the lowest floor.
