How to become a lawyer

The road to become a lawyer is pretty hard. It is a lot of studying and a lot of skills. You will need to basically go to college for eleven years and after you finish with that, you will be able to go out and get a job. You will need to know both sides, defender and the prosecutor. You will know how to defend a person in court or prosecute. Becoming a lawyer will take you a lot of hard work and money. You will need to pay for college and that is going to be a big amount of money, it depends what college or university you go to also. Some do not charge that much and others do. But in general, a lawyer is a very high paying job and will require a lot of work.

You don't have to go to college for eleven years. You go seven. Four for undergrad and three for law school.

kevin is right, you do not need to attend college for eleven years, but only seven to get your degree.

That person who wrote we have to go to college for 11 years is stupid. I just finised my 7 year of college to get my degree. It was pretty easy to me!! I love being a lawyer.

Thank you for clarifying the number of years for completion. I was doing some research on the Internet on "How to become Lawyer", and what I read thus far is seven years. I'm looking for a career change from IT to something more interactive with people and still a decent salary.

what is the best thing to get your four year degree in before attending law school or does it even really matter?

"It is a lot of studying and a lot of skills." Based on just that horrible sentence, as an attorney, I have to question the (1) author's credentials for writing on the topic; (2) the quality of the articles on the site; and (3) if the remarks of "experts" on this site can actually harm readers with bad information.

"You will need to basically go to college for eleven years." Perhaps the writer is not familiar with the US system of legal education, which can be a safe assumption as this is the worldwideweb afterall and some of the information in this article is hilarious in its inaccuracy. First, in the US, you attend 4 years of college (or longer if it takes you longer to finish your bachelor's degree). Once you complete college, you attend law school. Law school is typically and almost invariably a 3-year program.

"after you finish with that, you will be able to go out and get a job." Wrong, again. There's something called a bar exam that you have to pass before practicing law. Basically the author is suggesting that you go out and unlawfully practice law.

With the awful English grammar and usage, I wonder if this person is pulling one over on the community or just incredibly uncouth in attempting to gain some notoriety on at this site.

I am currenly obtaining a bachlors in criminal Justice. I aspire to practice law and question if my degree will satisfy the law requirements before law school. Would I have to take a yeaer or so transitional cource? Any replie would be greatly apreciated. Thank you-Joseph

Your four year degree can be in just about anything, but it somewhat depends on what law school you're trying to enter. You won't get into Harvard if you got a 4 year degree in fashion design (Legally Blonde!) But you can get into the mid to lower tier schools with degrees that aren't the typical. Here's the deal though: get your degree in things that interest you. Most attorneys who graduate have no idea what type of law they are going to practice. You get out of school and you get a job. Most graduates can't be too picky about their first job out of school. A great undergrad degree for any area of law is Psychology. A great undergrad degree for any business law is, you guessed it, Business (or finance, or marketing). Hey, even a degree in fashion design can be very valuable if you want to be in-house counsel for Versace, right? The key is to get the highest GPA possible so that you can qualify for admission. Caveat: If you want to go into patent law, you MUST get a degree in one of the sciences (see www.uspto.gov for "patent agent" designations). For all of you out there wondering about becoming a lawyer, yes it is hard but the payoff is amazing both mentaly and monetary wise

with becoming a lawyer from what I have read requires after passing the bar exam in the state/states you want to practice in you are required to do so many probono(free) case hours

I want to become a lawyer just don't what area of law I'm interested in buisness law criminal and traffic law just don't know the earning potential of each
