When you want to know how to make a free website you're generally going to fit into one of the following categories:

  • An individual looking to build a free website about any old topic
  • A small business looking to get a 'foot in the door' on the Internet, or
  • Someone building a free website for a group of people like a church, or family.

I'd like you to first read through my first page on how to build a free website so you can get an idea of your requirements. Don't worry it's a really easy read and there's a link back to this page (How to make a free website) at the bottom.

Once you've identified your basic needs you'll need to take some sort of action to get the project off the ground. The first question you need to ask is:

Do I need a personalised domain name, or am I happy to with what the free hosting company gives me?

Generally an individual will be happy enough with what the hosting company gives you, but if you run a business you might want to take a look at buying a personalised domain name, like www.yourbusinessname.com.

So once you know where you stand with the name of your website you'll need to find somewhere to host it. Even though you just want to learn how to make a free website you should still take care when choosing a free hosting service. You don't really want to end up with a bunch of ads on your website, or not enough space to host your family photo's so it's something you'll want to look into before making a decision.

Let's talk about the graphics and design for a moment.

You've seen those one of a kind websites which you just know has cost someone thousands of dollars or taken A LOT of time... yet you still want to have something like it for free. Well it's not impossible, it is hard but if you really want customised headers, graphics and design elements while learning how to make a free website then you'll have to pay close attention to some upcoming training material and and follow along closely. It's not for the faint of heart because it can take a few weeks to get right. But for some people that's completely fine for the outcome they're going to get.
