How to tile,a basic beginners guide.

Homeowners look for simple ways to add to their home's value and appeal. An easy way to do this is to improve the home. Very basic tiling is fairly simple and straight forward,so I hope this will help to give you a better understanding of just what is involved.

Start by measuring the area where the tile will be installed. You will need to work out just how much tile you will need to cover your chosen area and you will also need at least 10 - 15% more for breakage's or replacements. Then you're ready to go out and select your tiles . Check online or at your local home improvement store to find the best prices,colors and designs. You will also need to buy some kind of backer board,which is normally a cement base type board. The most basic tools you need are those such as a trowel, grout, spacers, and mortar.

Next, especially when you are just learning how to tile, is to measure up the backer board your going to use. Cut a piece to fit in the area you intend to cover with your chosen cutting tool. Test it out the backing board before you fit it, prior to mixing any mortar. The reason for this is you don't want any mortar to dry, if the backer board doesn't fit properly.

Place a thin layer of mortar over your intended area to be tiled. Wait while it dry's, then, place a layer of mortar on the area where your backer board is going to go. Use the side of a notched trowel to create ridges. Place the board over the ridged mortar ,then stand on it, to get pressed firmly into place. Make sure its solid. To make sure it will not move,use some roofing nails or cement-board screws to secure the backer board.

Reference lines,what are these and why should you use them?

The next step is to create reference lines. If your doing a floor for example, it is very important to find the true center. You will want to start from the center and then work out from that point.

You want everything to line up true. You do this by finding the center of each wall. Mark the spot. Then run a chalk line to the opposite side of the room. This chalk line needs to go to the other center spot on the other wall. Repeat for the other side. Where those chalk lines cross is the center of the area you are intending to cover. From that center spot,run a row of tiles out to one side at 90 degrees and your away.

At your start point,place a thin layer of mortar on a section of the backer board and start laying. Make sure to not cover up reference lines as you go as you will end up with a uneven finish. Pressing down on the tile,get it well into the mortar. Place tiles onto the mortar using the small spacers. These spacers will help you get a good finish to the job. They will create space between each tile where you will later place grout.

Once you have finished laying your tiles, wait for at least 1 hour to let the mortar to dry out. You can use a blade, to scrape away any mortar that creeps up as it dries.

After the mortar has dried and excess has been scraped off by using a blade, you're ready to grout. The Grouting mixture fills in between the spaces. After the grouting has been done, the excess grout is then removed with a sponge or squeegee. You're done and finished! Now you know how to tile.
