How to Help Someone Quit Smoking

You probably have a friend or a relative who is trying to quit smoking. In case he approaches you for assistance in his de-addiction program, you must be fully aware of what you are getting into. Quitting smoking is never easy and you have to do everything you can to ensure that the individual gets all the help from you that he needs. You should find out how to deal with his withdrawal symptoms and provide moral support. He will find it easier to battle the physical and mental aspects of smoking if he knows that you are also with him.

You must, first of all, discuss your exact role in the de-addiction program. It’s necessary that the two of you have a candid talk on what each one is expected to do. Your role is always secondary and the smoker has to stay committed to the program, no matter what. You must ensure that he does not feel tempted to smoke in your absence. You cannot quit smoking on his behalf but you must be able to provide the necessary guidance.

As someone who has decided to help the person quit smoking, you should understand that he could require a lot more effort than you had probably initially envisaged. You could check the internet for stories of other smokers trying to quit and then you would become more aware of how bad the situation is for the friend. It’s important that you see things from his perspective to know what could come your way. Empathy is important, but you must also be stern enough to ask your friend to follow up his ‘No Smoking’ promise with action. You must do sufficient research on smoking and related subjects.

Even if you have never smoked, you have probably had a bad habit that was hard to break. Now, you will understand your friend’s situation better and will not react adversely if he curses or threatens you. If you think you are stressed by just being there to help the person handle the situation, you can only imagine his plight.

Simply because you are expected to be there for your friend does not mean that you neglect yourself in the process. Get adequate rest and the right kind of food. You may have to vent out your own frustrations and even take a break from being the caregiver. Do not overlook your needs, physical or emotional. In case you want to go away for a little while, let your friend know that he should call another friend or a hotline. Spend some time by yourself. You must recharge your batteries and if need be talk to someone when your friend is being very difficult.

Helping someone quit smoking is a time consuming process. You must know when to do what; when to speak up and when to listen to your friend. You should find out about the exact techniques involved in the de-addiction program. Imagine the worst that could happen as part of the smoking cessation program and only if you think you can handle it, should you agree to help your friend. With your help, your friend will succeed and soon become a non-smoker.
