My family & my car

Car Maintenance is very important part of owning your car. Checking and inspecting your car could save you hundred of dollars at garage shop.

When i first got my own car, my family (the men) did all the checking and told me when I needed to go the repair shop for a check up. It was Great while it lasted!!

When i was away from my family, I realize that I was on my own. There was no one to help me.The gas station are all self service now. Where do you go for help.

I then realize my brothers, husband and father never taught me a thing about my car. I was lost! I didn't know how to to check the basic automotive care. I had to learn the hard way, what to do.

5 Things you want to do every week to keep your car in top condition:

  1. Check the oil
  2. Check the coolant recovery tank
  3. Inspect belts, hoses and battery connections
  4. Make sure tires are inflation at right air pressure
  5. Check window wipers for wear and tear

I always check the underneath the hood when the car is cold to touch. Morning are best!

1)The first thing I do is to check the oil. Morning is best or when the car

is cool to touch. Find the dipstick, usual near the engine. Please look at the picture I provided. On my car the dip stick is bright yellow. If you can't find yours, please check your owner manual.

1)Remove the engine oil dipstick

2)Wipe the dipstick, clean with paper towel and reinsert it all the way into the tube. Pull the dipstick out again and observe the level of oil clinging to dipstick.

3)Look at dipstick, most are marked Full and Add. When it down to Add, your engine is 1 qt low. Add oil to full mark. DONOT go over the Full mark. also make sure the car on level ground. If your car needs oil, please check your owner manual for what type it takes.

Checking the cooling system

When the car is cold, look for the coolant recover system. It usually on the left side of the car behind the washer fuild. Please look at my picture. please check owner manual if you can't find it. When the car car cold, on the coolant recovery tank there should be at the Normal or Cold mark on the side of recovery taIk. If needed add a mixture of antifreeze / water mixture to recovery.

I always look under the car to see if there's any leaks on the pavement. If you see greenish / yellow, it could mean you could have a leak somewhere in the coolant system. Try to see where it coming from. If you see brown stains, you could have a oil leak. Both of these leaks could be trouble and proably need a lookover at the repair shop

Inspecting the car, checking tires and windshield wipers

I always inspect the underneath the hood for anything that doesn't look normal.

  1. Check hoses if cracked, leaking, should be replace. Note only inspect when car is cold.
  2. Check belts if belts llok cracked, brittle, oil socked or slipping, it needs to be replaced.
  3. checked to make sure battery cables are tight.

I usually check my air in my tires and don't forget the spare.

  1. You need a air pressure gauge. when you press it down on the tire value, the stem of gauge pop out and will indicate how much pressure is in the tire.

If you look at your tire it will tell you what type a tire it is, the size and should tell you how much air the tire should have. You also can check your owner manual.

These are just a few of the things I do every week keep my car in good running order.
