Ah… the aspect of using more than one monitor for work and play. No, it is not just something for the computer gods and the rest of us to dream about. It is real, and quite possibly more easier to access than you think. The ability to work easily with two windows on separate monitors is an amazing feat, as well as being able to use dual monitors for gaming, or just to increase your productivity at home while watching movies, or editing pictures.

All that you need is a graphics card with two VGA or DVI ports, or a laptop with one external VGA/DVI port and you can have your sweet dual monitor setup up and running in no time.

  1. First, you’ll need to setup your monitor viewing space, pick a proper desk or special locale that will support both of your monitors and will make it easy for you to work with them comfortably while multitasking.
  2. This step is a tricky one, plug in your secondary monitor to the unused VGA/DVI port on your graphics card, or if you’re using a laptop plug it into the unused external VGA/DVI port.

  3. Next, right click on your desktop and go to ‘Properties’, then click on the ‘Themes’ tab, and click on the second monitor box, and check ‘Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.’

Voila! Now you’re able to use both monitors at the same time and increase your screen size. To use your second monitor just move your mouse over to the right side and it will automatically move over to the other monitor, this opens up endless possibilities of what you can do with your two monitors. Some games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and Supreme Commander fully support the second monitor, though with Microsoft Flight Simulator I think you’ll be much better off with a wicked setup like in the picture at the top of this post.
