77Huancayo Peru is also known as Insurmountable City. It is the capital of Junin region located in central highlands of Peru. It is situated on left bank of Mantaro River in Mantaro Valley at an altitude of 3,271 meters above the sea level. The city is a fertile valley and 310 km away from Lima.
The city was officially founded on 1st June 1572 and named 'Santísima Trinidad de Huancayo'. It was liberated on 20th November 1820, during Peru's war of Independence.
Huancayo is commercial and cultural hub of the entire central Peruvian Andes area. The city is connected to other Andean cities and Lima by highway and railroad. Huancayo is a tourist centre. The picturesque religious buildings and cathedrals are some of the well-known tourist places. Huancayo is also known for craft and different festivals celebrated in surrounding region. National University of Central Peru is located in Huancayo.

The delicate metalwork done in the region is equally famous. Visitors shouldn’t miss the tour of different towns in Mantaro valley. People in search of adventure can trek, on horseback or by foot, the jungles along the eastern slopes of Andes region.
