Hub Content Guidelines

What prompted me to make this Hub was seeing just how many authors could be on this site for weeks, months or even years when they suddenly got a Hub flagged and found out they didn't actually know the rules that govern what is and what is not acceptable content on the HubPages site.

You'd think that when people did something like register to use a site, they'd read the Terms of Use so that they understood exactly what sort of legal contract they'd just entered into, but it turns out that over 90% of people are willing to just sign up blindly for nearly anything.

However, if you really want to have a productive (and profitable) HubPages experience, it's well worth it to learn the content guidelines and rules.  After all, if your Hubs break the rules, they'll be unpublished by the admin team, and then you won't have page views, readers or any potential for advertising income.

Things To Avoid When Making A New Hub

All of the above types of content can result in a Hub being flagged and reviewed (or unpublished) by the HubPages admin team.
All of the above types of content can result in a Hub being flagged and reviewed (or unpublished) by the HubPages admin team.

Just the FAQs

At the top of every HubPages page, in the righthand corner is a small button that reads "help." This is one of the most helpful of all help pages on HubPages, as it's the Frequently Asked Questions list, aka the FAQ. This is a reader-friendly version of everything said in the Terms Of Service, along with other common questions about the site. The "questions" are found in the blue boxes that run down the righthand side of the page, and if you click on a question, it will jump you down the page to the specific answer. If you haven't ever read the entire page before, it's really a good idea to do so.

The Terms of Use

Section four of the HubPages terms of use is all about what's NOT allowed in Hub content or what sort of conduct is prohibited. Here are just a few of the points specified. As a HubPages user or Author, you may not create

  • Content or links that is pornographic, defamatory, libelous, tortuous, vulgar, obscene, invasive of privacy, racially or ethnically objectionable, hateful, promotes or provides instructional information about illegal activities, or promotes any act of cruelty to animals.
  • Use Hubpages, the Website or Service to violate any Federal, state or local laws. Your Hubs must comply with all local laws regarding online conduct and acceptable content.
  • Link to pages or sites that are unrelated to the topic and content of Your Hub.
  • Impersonate another Author or any representative or employee of Hubpages.
  • Create Hubs for any illegal activities or to promote or make solicitations for any illegal or unauthorized activity.
  • Harass, threaten or intimidate Authors or others who use the Service.

Really, since every user on the site has legally agreed to abide by these terms (and more), it's important to actually read this entire document.

Be Careful What You Pay For

One thing that is listed in Google's AdSense terms of service that many Hub Authors miss:

Sites with Google ads may not include or link to content regarding programs which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails.

Here's where you can read more about Google's AdSense Program Policy.  Remember, if it's against the rules to Google, it's also against the rules at HubPages.

Flagging Hubs (or if you got Flagged)

"Flagging" a Hub is when a site user sends an alert to the HubPages admin team to let them know that something about the content of a Hub may be breaking the rules. The flags are not seen by the Hub author. They are just to alert Admin that something may be wrong. If Admin gets a lot of flags about a Hub, they'll be sure to take a look at it quick. In the end, it's Admin's call as to whether a Hub is actually breaking a site content rule or not. If not, the Hub just stays "as is" and the author will never know. If a true problem is found, the Hub will be unpublished by Admin, and an email will be sent to the author letting them know just what the problem was with their Hub. They then have ot edit or fix the content to comply with the rules, and then send an email back to Admin to have it manually approved and republished.

When a Hub is flagged, clicking the "flag this hub" link brings up a list of common problems so that the person reporting it can check off what they think is wrong. This helps Admin review the Hub and find the problem more quickly. What you see below is the flag definition list that comes up below the flag options:

Flag Definitions

  • Adult - Nudity, sexually explicit content or links to adult or pornography sites
  • Gambling - Promotes gambling or links to sites that promote or offer gambling for money
  • Spam - Solely promotes another site, especially when Hub links all point to one site
  • Low Quality - Empty, nearly empty or could not be useful or interesting to anyone
  • Miscategorized or Deceptively Tagged or Titled - Hub is in the wrong category, or contains misleading title or tags that don’t match the Hub’s content; includes irrelevant, and excessive tagging
  • Not Written In English - Primarily written in a language other than English
  • Duplicate - You believe the text content of this hub was copied from another source
  • Other - Violates the HubPages Terms of Use in a way other than those listed above

About Flagging

When you go to flag a Hub, the following text appears next to the checklist and definitions:

Flagging Hubs

HubPages uses a flagging system to allow our readers to notify us about low-quality or inappropriate content in Hubs. If a Hub receives enough flags, we will evaluate it for possible removal. If a Hub is removed, a message will be sent to the Author explaining why his/her Hub has been removed.

Note:Any one flag does not have the ability to remove a Hub. A large number of flags simply alerts our moderation team to check the Hub out, and determine if it should be removed. A removed Hub that has been reworked to meet our guidelines can be republished.

Now, I can't technically prove what I'm about to say next, but it's really what I believe after reading a lot of posts by other Hub authors in the forums over the course of two years: If flagged for the right reasons, a single flag really CAN result in a Hub being removed, aka unpublished. However, it's not the flag itself that does it, it's the review by the HubPages team. And while flags on Hubs are anonymous to the Hub owner, the admin team does know the identity of who submitted the flag.  So, if you do get a Hub flagged, it's something where the admin team felt you were not within the content boundaries, not something that's happened as an act of revenge from a fellow site user.

If You Get A Hub Flagged And UnPublished...

  1. It's not for "no reason." It's for violating one of the site rules.
  2. Admin sends an email to the Hub owner/author when they get unpublished telling them what the specific violation was. If you don't understand exactly what the email they send you says, you can reply to admin and ask them for further clarification.
  3. You can get Hubs that were administratively unpublished re-published if you bring the content into compliance with the rules. Be sure to email admin when you are ready to republish as they will need to check the Hub to make sure whatever the problem content was has been amended or edited appropriately. Emailing them gets your Hub back up and live much faster than if you just resubmit and don't inform them.
  4. If a large number of your Hubs contain prohibited content or are determined to be substandard, your account can be put on manual review. This means nothing will be published when you click the publish button until it has been reviewed by someone from the admin team.
  5. If your AuthorScore (the number that appears on your Avatar) falls below 75, all outgoing links on all your Hubs are going to have "nofollow" tags attached to them.  This is HubPages way of telling the search engines that they don't think your content is a quality product.  And if your AuthorScore really does drop below 75, you can be sure there's something you're doing wrong.

The terms of use exist but they do not specifically define where the lines are drawn. I have found admin. folks who actually will to some extent get specific. The corporations have things worded the way they do for a reason. They're called 'catch-all' phrases for a reason.

I'm not sure I agree with your word choice regarding AuthorScore since so many things having nothing to do with the actual quality of your writing can influence it . . . like waiting 9 days to have several of your edited hubs republished, for example.

It is nice, however, that you are at least trying to help people with this issue. (If your interested in some specific examples of what is NOT allowed just let me know. I sure can tell you!

Thanks. I'll bookmark it and read it over again when I have time. I have so much more to learn, especially about the blue hyperlinking stuff and highlighting info as you did in this hub. So many things to learn and not enough hours in a day!

Relache, you did a fine job here. We all need to be made aware of the rules from time to time, or re-read them to make sure we are doing quality work. Thanks, Don White

Yes all to easy to forget the rules even when you have been writing on HubPages for a while, very good reminder of what should already be known.
