Tips and Tools Introduction
Last edited: 23/01/2008
I hope this hub will give new and old hub and blog users some new and well established ideas on how they can optimize their articles to gain more traffic and how they can promote it for to get lots of traffic. Lots of users want this traffic from people so they can make money with AdSense as well as their other revenue capsules or affilates.
These tips and tools will hopefully not just attract random views but also get you some targeted 'consumers' who will be interested in your articles and hopefully products linked with it. If you have additions please feel free to leave me a comment I hope to keep improving this hub, thank you.
The Tips and Tools Enjoy!
Yahoo! Buzz
Yahoo! Buzz is a great to find out what the top searched for terms are through Yahoo!. Giving you and Overall top 20 searched terms as well as top climbers that day and then splitting the searches down into 6 categories. As well as this there is the buzz log which gives you details and variants of what the top searches are. The site is updated every 24 hours Tuesday to Saturday with a weekly round up on Sunday This site is great to get ideas on hot topics that you can write on and hopefully with the right advertising of them get a healthy traffic load.
Google Trends
Google Trends is another site where you can find out what people are searching for but the difference is the results are gathered from the Google search engine and are updated hourly rather then daily. With these hourly updates you get a different sense of what people are searching for because if you want to catch the hype about a particularly subject you'll have to act fast on making your hub. However you can keep a close eye on the chart and see what is making its way up the top 100 and be ready for when it peeks.
Widow.com Most Popular Searches - Top 200
This is a new addition to the tools I use to find a topic that is popular and that people are searching for so that i can write about it and get some of that traffic. Widow.com is pretty much your average search engine but it has one excellent feature and that is it tells you exactly what people have been searching for, how many searches it has got and what the top 200 searches are. Some people pay to get this sort of precise information about Google but Widow are giving to you for free! yes it's true that Widow is not as widely used as Google but this still gives you a great incite into the life of the Internet community, your audience. Use it wisely Widow Most Popular Searches - Top 200. simply hover your mouse over the keywords to find out how many times it has been searched for, you may want click it as well to see what your competition will be.
Overture Keyword Tool
This is by far my favourite tool for maximising my traffic and healthy traffic for that matter. This tool allows you to enter one keyword or phrase and it tells you how many searches were carried out on it. This is not my favourite part, it also shows you similar search terms for example if you were to search Britney Spears the next two most searched terms under just 'Britney spears' are 'Britney Spears Picture' and 'Britney Spears **********'. These similar key terms also show you how many times they've been searched for. This is useful for two reasons as you can incorporate the top related keywords into your hub and also get ideas on what hubs you should write surrounding a particular person or whatever. Overture Keyword Tool.
Social Bookmarking
I'm sure most hubbers will know this one but social bookmarking can make a big difference to traffic size. The most popular social bookmarking sites are digg and del.ico.us, to bookmark your site on one these sites there is already a capsule in your hub allowing you to do this. Simply enter your URL if it has not been done automatically, give it a tittle, a summary and if required some keywords. this will give a link tour site and hopefully an extra results or results on search engines. Here are the top 25 Social Bookmarking sites:

MyBookmarks.com : MyBookmarks is a free Internet service that allows you to keep your browser bookmarks and favorites online so you can access them from anywhere.
Ping
Pinging follows the same principle of social bookmarking. there are several sites that 'ping' which is ending your hub link to many social bookmarking and blog directory websites all at once. some of the most popular are Autopinger and Pingomatic. Its easy to do and quickly spreads the word your hub is out.
Directories
Submitting your hubs to directories is not a great way to get traffic but it can be useful for some subjects. If you were to write a hub on a subject that would never age for instance it was not a current affairs story or was only really going to be interesting for a month then i wouldn't bother adding it to directories. However if it was a hub say on the life of Gandhi then there will be a recurring demand.
RSS Feeds
RSS Feeds is another great way to spread the word of your work. Hubpages incorporates this technology into its ever growing system of little gadgets. RSS is a Web feed format used to publish frequently updated content such as Hubs and blog entries. People who have already found your work can subscribe to this rss feed and then continually get updates from you, recurring traffic. However you can advertise your RSS feed through directories such as rssfeed.com. These feeds are received by the subscriber through a rss reader, there are plenty to choose from some already built into web browsers.
Forums
Sharing your content on forums where it is relevant is perfect targeted traffic. If you were to write a hub on Elvis Presley and there was a Elvis Presley Forum you can join start a subject saying i have recently written an article on the king and ask for opinions. Do Not Spam, spamming will just get links removed and will be a waste of time, be polite, put in some effort and follow up replies to your post.
Stew your hubs
Very important I feel to stew your hubs. Once you have written your hub and unless it needs to be published straight away to catch growing trends then leave your hub for a day or two to gather a hubscore. Seriosly leaving a hub unpublished will allow the hub to gather a higher hubscore so that when you submit the hub it wll be ranked higher. I don't know why this is the case but I try to do it, the maximum hubscore I've received without publishing it was around 72.
Add Topic Relevant Captions To Pictures
By adding captions to pictures on your hubs you will be able to gain traffic from Image Search Engines, for example Google Images. If i had a rare picture of say 'David Beckhams New Tattoo' and this had been in the news or whatever and was gathering lots of searchs, then you find a picture of that tattoo and add it to your hub if this is what you are writting about of course. Then add the caption 'David Beckhams New Tattoo'. This will get indexed by google images etc and you will gain traffic from it. I have gained a fair bit of traffic from pictures that have captions.
Niche
To get more traffic try to write on niche subjects that don't have allot of content on them around the web. If you were to write on a niche subject and do it well you will be ranked high in search results as there will be less competition. Hubbing for profit is a delicate balance between popular subjects and nice topics, its been said before I'm sure but I'm saying it again. An example of a niche topic would be on something like 1940s gas mark manafacture, thinking completly randomly.
Top Paying AdSense Keywords
We all want to know what AdSense adverts earn us the most money. AdSense scans your hubs for keywords and then targets the ads based on the keywords for example writing about insurance would produce adverts on insurance. So we want to know what to write to make the most money, this can found Here and is the list by letter of the highest paying AdSense keywords. Of course because these are high paying there will be competition on most, do your research.
Web CEO
Web CEO is commercial product which will allow you optimize your website, blog or hub for high ranks in search engines. On top of this it has a handy feature will submit your URL to 100s of search engines automatically. These search engines as-well as the most popular ones like Google, Yahoo! and MSN it also submits to less commonly used engines but ones that will hopefully get you results from around the globe. There is a free trial and a full product. To get your copy of Web CEO go Here.
I hope you found this useful and as I say please leave my comment if you feel I've left something hugely major out. Good luck with getting traffic to your hubs and remember you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink, if the hub is not a high quality the user won't stick around to bother viewing it properly and therefore won't take the slightest interest in what adverts are on it what so ever.
Free Xbox 360 Package - great site to get a real free xbox 360 console
Life and Death of an Ice Cream (videos can attract more views and higher hubscores)

Good tools to optimise your sites.
Hey great work! I learned alot and am putting it to use right this very moment :)
My only tip would be maybe if your links opened into new windows it would help us not leave your hub and also might avoid people reloading the hub and giving it false traffic data... :)
Thank You for your comments.
I've now added the top 25 Social Bookmarking Websites
and changed links to open in a new window.
enjoy!
This Hub will definitely give new and old hubbers some very useful information. Great Hub.

Great hub. Great job. Very informative and helpful. Thanks for this.
Hi Stubbs! Lots of information about social bookmarking. I haven't done any of them not yet but will start it soon. Rest of your hubs are too juicy, well I guess thats what people like & search for it. Oh! Thanks for joining my fans club.
This is really helpful information and the social bookmarking list if great! (Is this the stubsy who had a pf blog?)
hay man great work you have dont there keep it up
Wow! Thanks...
Nice info. Thanks.
amazing...I love things like this!
I'm glad so many people have enjoyed this, if you could do you think people could digg this article please.
thank you
Very well written and highly informative. Thanks.
Great Hub! I'm wondering if it's worth dividing up the social bookmarking sites to show which ones you can promote heavily on and which ones you have to be careful with? Helium has already been banned on Digg for self-promotion, because it's against Digg's rules. That probably wouldn't have happened if people had bookmarked only their very best sites, but some Heliumites got over-enthusiastic. I'd hate that to happen to Hubbers!
Thank you for this painstaking collection, Stubbs. Much appreciated!
finally got around to reading this..awesome information
cool glad this has been useful, got some stuff to add soon actually x
Merry Christmas

Wow! Super advice. And free. Do you know that people are paying for ebooks with this info in it? LOL Maybe you should sell this stuff on Clickbank!
I am pretty new to huppages and I have google ads on my articles, but I can't figure out how to get the Amazon ads. I signed up with Amazon and it gave me code to paste into my pages' website. But I don't know how to paste this code on hubpages. Have I gone about something the wrong way? I just don't know who to ask. I would love some advise. Thank you for the helpful hub!
Hey, thanks for all the info. Another really good pinging service which I use is pingoat, but I'm looking forward to using these other ones as well. Great hub!
Wow, what a find on my first day here. Thanks, Stubbs!

Very nice indeed! I'm amazing how much I'm lacking in tis department hah

Excellent Hub
Very helpful, thanks a lot. Just getting back into hubpages, and I really needed somthing like this!
great tips hope they work for me
Overture (see Overture Keyword Tool, near the top of this page) has been taken by Yahoo! This link might get you there but I'm not sure:
http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/
They seem to offer many services but I can't tell yet if any are free. Thanks for these great tips.
Execellent advice. Your advice is not only a great tool to building a popular Hub...It is also a great resource for any one who is trying to do niche reseacrh.
Keep up the good work!
Just want say a job well done. Great info!
Hi Stubbs,
I came across this post quite by accident while visiting a forum on marketing.
Even though some of the information is a little out of date, it's a superb article and great for anyone looking to generate traffic to a website or blog using white hat techniques.
Well done.
Great great advise! I will definitely try some of these tips. I have now published 21 hubs and they have not been paid too much attention. :( Hopefully after I do some of the above I'll have better luck.
Traffic as we know is the answer to everything, Your advise is top notch and i congratulate you on a very well written and informative hub.
Thank you, wow, what a long, comprehensive, and detailed list. I'd like to share some of my ideas:
1. Instead of manually submitting to social bookmarkins sites, use something like OnlyWire or Social Poster (found this one just now) at http://www.socialposter.com
2. Comment on other hubs - just leave useful comments
3. Write articles and distribute them to article sites and everywhere permitted
4. Comment on other blogs
5. Cross-promote between your hubs, lens and blogs
Great ideas on web promotion.
I'm with freegraphicsvault on Onlywire.com. Definitely saves me a lot of time. And unfortunately, Overture has gone the way of Yahoo, and I can't seem to find any free aspects anymore, but from what I've heard they used to be great. Thanks for the tips!
thanks everyone for all your kind comments. its nice to know this hub is helping people :-)
Awesome advice. A lot of work but I am sure it will pay off.
thank you very much for your advise
Thanks for such an outstanding article that's chock full of essential traffic resources, and alot more tools that I hadn't even heard of before! As angels77 says "a lot of work" but it will pay off. These are great resources here!
A great hub . All the tools and tactics to increase some serious amount of traffic . I like this one very much . Great job for putting this hub to assist others .
Helped me alot, thanks.
whow thanks for the tips thay are great.
Thank you for sharing all of this helpful information!
Some great things to try!
Thanks
I will be exploring the links and suggestions on this hub for many days to come! The Black Widow is a search that looks really helpful for getting over 'writer's block' in a sensible way--namely by suggesting things to research that are actually pertinent to what people want to read.
Very good.
This is going to be ridiculously useful for me - thanks. I think I'm really going to have to cross-promote, especially on my other blogs.
I appreciate your input, thanks it helped me.
Tip here I think the Overture Keyword Tool is going away. I have seen rumours posted to that effect. The new Yahoo! tool to replace it will likely be similar to Google's with a likert scale (1-5). Maybe this is old information but I'd update the link
Fantastic hub. I'm just learning the fundamentals of all this, so this hub gives me a good picture of how far I still have to go. It will give me an opportunity to take one step at a time. Many thanks.
a very well researched hub, well done!
Spot on! So gracious of you to provide such clear and highly useful information!
Thank's for such good info.
Good to see an older Hub still gets feeback.
good one...
Stubbs, your page is very helpful. Infact I implemented your methods on my first hub. God bless u.

This is excellent information and it didn't cost me a dime, thanks.
You are such a good Hub Citizen.
Excellent hub full of great info for the new hubber and internet hack!
Thanks!
This an excellent hub with fantastic information at one place. I have one technical question. In what legal way are we allowed to input those images? What is the protocol to go through? In the old days referencing something (like in a theme paper) was correct, but today with images, copywriting everything on the planet, or even linking to pages, has become so rediculous that I'm not sure anymore what to 'politically correctly' do. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Life is so great to share like what we have on the Internet today......other than the political question.
Brilliant - thank you
Thank you especially for the list of social bookmarking sites. Also I wonder why not publishing a hub allows it to get such a large hubscore. I did the same thing with my latest hub and it too got a score of 72 before I published it. I wondered if it was something as simple as the number of times the author visits the hub to tweak it before publishing. If it was, that would suggest that your own visits to a hub count maybe after it is published as well?
Good information...well written and researched.
Very good information.
Great information! -- However, I have one question: I recently heard an interview with a Hubpages staffer who said that "stewing" didn't help in the long run -- that your score would "normalize" after you published it. Have you noticed whether or not the higher hubscore you get stays high after publication?
Thanks!
Thanks again,
Lee
Really helpful- thanks!
Wow, I have a lot to learn! Great hub!
Great hub! Great job writing it, too!
Wow! Very impressive hub. Thanks for sharing!

This was very useful. I wonder if you know something else technical. Is there a plug in for Word Press that feeds your latests hubs? That would be useful for me so I could just put it in my sidebar.
Excellent hub. Great resources. I've bookmarked this page for reference.
Good. I must admit I did not know much about Ping. Perhaps when you get a chance again you can write to a considerable length on Ping and RSS.

Special THANX , this HUB really Rocks!!!
hi Stubbs, great hub - takes a while to get through all the comments though! I'm going to try "stewing" my next hub. One learns something new every day (well, at least every visit to hubpages!). I like your pot image (for the stewing tip). An example of how a clever image idea adds to the readability and enjoyment factor of a great hub.
This is brilliant, thanks for sharing this!
This is excellent -- I have already worked out some of these for myself (and do them), but I am definitely going to bookmark this article.
