Since the internet revolution started several decades ago, everyone is struggling to make money online. There's a thousand and one ways to make money in the internet but I'm interested with making money by blogging. Should I use HubPages or should I set up my own blogging website? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one? Which one makes money better?

Let's do a little analysis and let's start with HubPages. How does it work and how do we use it? Here's how:

1. Create a HubPages account. Provide a user name, a password, and a valid e-mail address.

2. Create a hub and start blogging. You are not making any money yet.

3. Apply as a Google Adsense publisher.

4. Your Google Adsense gets approved, provide HubPages with your Publisher ID. Your hubs start to earn money.

5. Create more hubs or continue blogging. Wait for your paycheck.

How about setting up our own blogging website?

1. Go to a domain registrar, find a domain name like "myblog.com", and register it. You will have to pay about $10 a year for the registration of the domain name.

2. Go to a webhosting site and create an account. Webhosting usually cost around $5 to $10 dollars a month, depending on the features and limitations imposed by the webhost.

3. Go back to your domain registrar and point your domain's DNS to your webhost.

3. Log in to your webhosting control panel and design your own website.

4. Apply as a Google Adsense publisher.

5. When Google Adsense is approved, create adsense banners and channels. Copy the advertisement codes into your website. You are not earning money yet. Why? No one knows about your blogging website and your website does not appear on any search engine, so you will get no visitors.

6. You have to tell Google Search about your website. You may also need to tell each and every major search engines about your blogging website.

7. You will need to know what SEO means before you possibly earn serious money from your own blogging website.

From the above analysis, it is evident that simply using the HubPages services is faster and easier than setting up your own website. You do not need to spend a single cent to start making money online. You do not have to worry about search engine optimization since your hubs are appearing on the major search engines and your hubs may even be appearing on the first page of the search results if not on top of them. Of course HubPages has its own disadvantage - it takes 40% of your total revenue from Google Adsense!!!

It can be seen that setting up your own blogging website is a tedius job and you need to spend some bucks too. Not only that, you need to spend some time maintaining it. It seems to me that it is meant for the more computerese and those who could afford to spend a lot of time in front of their computers. The advantage of course is that you own all the fruits of your labor. No one takes away part of your Google Adsense revenue, except Google itself.

So which one is better? Use HubPages, and if you have the time and the guts, also build your own blogging website. In this way you maximize your money making potential on the net.

Nice article thanks. I think there are advantages and disadvantages both ways, the thing is if you do both you can negate the negatives of the other. Of course that conversation would be one sided on here. Anyway thanks for the advice. Gives us something to think about.

Great hub and very true. If I may add to this for anyone considering setting up their own website:

Approximately half of your time will be spent on the website creation, page creation, links, promotion etc. and the other half on writing the actual content, so in essence it will take twice as long as just using Hubpages for your articles.

So if my time calculations are correct, would it be true to say that by using Hubpages you are up 10% on possible adsense revenue because Hubpages only take 40% of your adsense revenue?

Thanks for being one of my fans. I have another 2 hubs now - both with my own poetry. I enjoy reading your hub pages, too.

This a great topic and one I was very curious about. Also, an additional perk to HubPages is it comes with a built in community with supportive people like you. Thanks!

hey thank you so much ANgerl of luv that info is really helpfull but tell me about that line which says hubpages takes 40% from your google adsense

Angel Of Love profile image

Angel Of Love  says:

Aitizaz Khan, it is said that revenue sharing in HubPages is 60-40. Or you get 60% and HubPages gets 40% of the revenue. Such statements are actually oversimplifications of the revenue sharing. In reality, HubPages gets 40% of the ads impressions and not the actual revenue.
