Why are you on Hubpages?
I came her to write and get paid. While looking through the local online job Listings I stumbled across the Hubpages Ad for online writers and the rest is history. I had just been laid off from my job after the restaurant I manged went bankrupt, and was looking for something promising. Over the course of the previous nine months I had come to the conclusion that the only way to be truly prosperous was to go into business for myself. Anything else merely amounted to a kind of wage slavery in which your progress and level of success would always be determined by those above you and ultimately the owner of whatever business or company you worked for. For most of my life I had been locked into the belief that financial freedom was the province of a select few either born into it or somehow luckier then I was. I trudged away day after day in low paying jobs, that were never satisfying or fulfilling all the while believing that success would be measured by my ability to pay bills.
I have always enjoyed writing and have kept a journal of one sort or another for years. In the Marines it helped me to cope with the reality around me, in jail it helped me to escape it. Looking at the add on yahoo, I saw an opportunity to pursue that dream of mine and finally start towards that life I had begun to desire. I knew that it would be an uphill climb and in the beginning I could expect little financial reward for my efforts but I also knew that if I could just commit to it and keep at it that one day I would achieve my goal and have a career and business of my own.So like many of you I came to Hubpages to make money. To write about what interested me and to get paid for it.
Making Money On Hubpages
Am I making money on Hubpages? Actually yes I am. For the first several weeks I didn't make a single penny. Getting selected for the Hub Nuggets roundup helped tremendously as far as bringing traffic to my hubs but did little to bring me revenue. However it did open my eyes to some basic tools and methods that would. I will not go into them here only to say that Google ad-words is a priceless commodity and so are many of the more experienced hubbers on here that write about all the little tricks and details to use to build search engine friendly Hubs. If you are not reading Hubs from those who have made money on this site, like Darkside, or our very own Maddie, you are only hurting yourself.
Since I am here to make money, I committed myself to becoming a sponge and soaking up all the information I could find about optimizing my Hubs to generate search engine hits. Suffice to say there were some things about my own writing style and interests that needed tweaking as well, and required a fair amount of objective criticism and comment from other Hubbers. In the end the result is worth the effort. Beyond making money from this site it is my goal to publish books and be read to that end, I have to work on perfecting my skills and practice actually writing. For me the hardest part about writing has always been getting my thoughts arranged into a cohesive stream that flows and is easy to translate into words and articles.
It's Not About You, But Me
After spending a fun and drama filled few days in the trenches of the religious forums I have come to the conclusion that not all of us are here for the same reasons. While this may be obvious to everyone, the real question in my mind was why are some people on this site? What are they trying to accomplish? Looking at many of the loudest voices on the forums lately I have noticed a disturbing trait in the number of hubs they have published. While there are quite a few avatars floating around with low numbers I have realized some of them are merely alternates for established and prolific hubbers, but not all. It seems to me that quite a few people on the forums have come to Hubpages for the sole purpose of arguing away the hours and attacking anyone who does not agree with whatever their point of view may be.
At first I wondered who really has that kind of time, but then I understood something even more profound. None of it matters. Nothing anyone else says in the forums really matters. I'm not saying that their opinion means nothing and they as people don't matter. What I am saying though is why should we care? Why did you come here to Hubpages? I came to write and work on my career and finally to make money. I've been caught up in the circus a few times myself and it is easy to get carried away, but its also easy to walk away. I don't know why all of you are here and I shouldn't worry about it. All I or any of us need to do is remember why we came here and what we set out to do. So again I ask you so that you will ask yourself; Why are you on Hubpages? Is what you're doing right now moving you towards that goal or holding you back?
Time To Get Back On Track
For me personally its time to get back to writing and working on my career. I have immensely enjoyed my time on the forums. It has been both entertaining and educational. For one thing I have learned that God does not need me to fight for him one bit there's a long line of people willing to be martyred for his name. Secondly I've learned some people can't be reasoned with no matter what you say and more importantly don't want to be. Third no matter how pure your data and logic, mix in a little human emotion and the whole affair goes to pot at the speed of light. Finally I have learned that all is fair in love and war, and even the most intelligent will resort to name calling when the chips are down if goaded properly.
So its time for me to get back to writing Hubs. To all my friends in the forums I will miss you,but I've decided to make my points in my hubs, and welcome you all to comment and share but if your reply is longer then my hub then you will be deleted. I came here to write, to publish articles about what I believe in, in a factual and researched format. I came here to make money and practice my writing. This is in no way a denouncement of the forums or those who dwell there continuously, like I said this isn't about you, it's about me. I"m trying to get my own business going online and to build a client base and advertise my work through blogging and Hubs. That's why I am really here.

African immigrant entrepreneurs are increasingly taking advantage of the low cost of starting online media to launch Web sites facilitating discussions between the Diaspora and the continent. Although the Internet has been a bridge between other immigrants and their home countries, connecting African immigrants to the continent has been slow because of underdeveloped infrastructure.

The forums can actually be fun if you go into with that mindset but I see too many people going in to do battle, and crush the opposition. That being said alot of what goes on is taken too seriously and personally.
Very well written. I keep away from 'Political' and 'religious' forums for the reasons you already mentioned. I cannot stand that mud slinging which some hubbers love to do (probably while sipping coffee). Besides, as you said, nothing what you say in the forums, matters to anyone. So what's the point! Speaking for myself, I love to write and thats why I'm here. Good work.
Hi Scott. I also found HubPages through a help wanted listing. Congrats with your Hub success - I'm not quite there yet myself but I'm plugging along.
You are right about the aggressive people in the forums. I disagree that what is said there doesn't matter though. I have read many of your forum posts and your opinion does matter to me quite a bit. I can be a trick to tune out the noise, true, but there are plenty of valid points by sincere people. I enjoyed your forum about scripture, you did a great job with it. You and I are on opposite ends, but I recognize an open mind when I see one just the same- and I think you do as well. The problem in general, not just in the forums here, is that there is a very fine line between "passionate" and "fanatic".
As I always say, there is supposed to be disagreement!
Good luck to you. :-)
I took a creative writing course in hopes of figuring how to piece together the various chapters I have for a book. My instructor suggested writing articles instead of a book if I found that to be easier. Once I did a search, that's how I found HubPages. :) I'm here to write and make money.
I got into a heated discussion in the religious forums ONCE...and vowed never again. I do visit the forums, but usually to meet new hubbers to see what they write about.
I've lost a few friends on HubPages because we had different views about what HP is to me versus what it is to them. They wanted it to be a social club where we all sit and chat. I want to write and if we chat some too, great.
@wyanjen..in regards to what is said in the forums not mattering It is in reference to your own goals.None of us should allow others opinions or views to force us off track or deter us from accomplishing our goals. The point being that all of us are here for our own purposes and mission. the moment we allow our concern for what others are saying and doing to take priority in our lives we also surrender control of our lives. While I do desire the success of others it is ultimately upon them to achieve it, not me. I have my own life and plans to worry about.
I hear you on that Scott. Take good care.
Nice Hub, Good Luck Scott!
A man on a mission. Sounds like you have found your voice Scott. Good luck
You are off to a great start on HubPages. You are a fine writer and I enjoy your calm, balanced view of things. I came to HubPages hoping to make money but when I read that one Hubber has had 1.4 million page views and is making $1000 a month I realized it probably won't happen here for me. I stuck with it anyway because I really want to write magazine articles and books that I can make a living from but to do that I feel I need to hone my craft. So, while honing, I have come to really enjoy the process of researching and writing and interacting with the community here. I'm going to stay with it until I get discovered. :)
I don't do the forums, though. I have not time for it.
Thanks for a fine article.
Awesome and I really needed this reminder today.
From my opinion forums are getting old, maybe to old to be able to be useful anymore. Like web directories, they getting old too.
Hay Scott! I have been so caught up in doing research that I have not had much time to read your Hubs, so I been trying to catch up because it is important to me to read other peoples hubs. I have never really been into the forms that much because it takes away from my writing. I am here fro three reasons...money improving my writing and learning from others.
I found hub pages from a google search on writing opportunities. Keep it up my friend, you are on your way!
Once a again great hub, welcome back to your roots.
I enjoyed reading this. Thanks
I always tell myself to write more hubs, and time is the only thing that's stopping me. Your article is inspiring, thanks.
Good hub Scott. A man who knows his own mind. Keep up the good work. I can understand people using the forums (maybe) but I can't understand those who join hubpages and have hundreds of forum posts but never write a single Hub. Strange. There are plenty of forums on the internet. Maybe they already joined them all or got kicked out.LOL
you know what you want and I think with all honesty that you do care,,,and people in the forum, well you cant change people, you just change your opinion of them! good hub!
@Prettydarkhorse, I do care about what people say, and how they treat each other but on the large scale what they believe really has little impact on me and so I feel little need to attack them over it. That being said people will be people and cruel no matter how many times the olive branch is extended. Then its just better to leave them alone with the only person they really want to listen to, themselves.
I used to do a lot of reading when I was in the Corps, but the only writing I did was letters. Great Hub, Scott.

GREAT ARTICLE! Nice to here how you found hubpages... I accidentally stumbled on it after creating a blog of which I do not use...YET. I arrived as a virgin to the Internet world and boy I have learned a lot. Though I have had an abundance of time caught up in hub stream (not typically forums ..*vomit*) :D I am ready to write more to create a career online with some other enterprises I've created...which are a great part online as well.
I have as well been caught lately in the forums, yet so easily turned off with having the same squeaky wheels moaning and creating strife... Not my flavor... I am into good, fun banter... and inspiring each other... :)
