Hubpages Recipes I Love
65
My Personal Picks
I love to read recipes. I clip them out of magazines and surf them on the net. There was a time when I read cookbooks in bed at night the way other people read best sellers, to lull myself to sleep. No surprise then, that I was drawn to recipe hubs from the very beginning of my exploration of Hubpages.
What I love about the recipes I come across on this site is their amazing scope and variety. They come from all over the world and range from simple family favorites to sophisticated gourmet goodies. Often they are accompanied by personal stories and always the personality of the individual hubber shines through the writing. Sometimes the directions are clear and the photos professional and sometimes not. Often,it’s the personal story behind the dish that draws me. My favorites are chosen for a variety of ideosyncratic reasons and reflect the personal taste of a convinced carnivore with a sweet tooth ,who leans towards simple ingredients and easy preparation . I’ve only scratched the surface I know and I am sure I have omitted some awesome goodies. But for what its worth here’s my list of the moment. Click on the link to check out each recipe.
The Recipes and the Hubbers
Chicken Paprikas by Szuszy Bee
Just for now, this is my all time personal favorite. It is her grandmother’s recipe, authentically Hungarian. Even better is the personal story which accompanies the recipe—it’s a poignant slice of her family life that adds zest to the dish. I’ll definitely make this one, though I don’t know if I have the nerve to tackle the home made Hungarian noodles that accompany it.
Home Made Donuts by Marie Audet
I don’t even own a deep fryer and I’ll probably never make donuts but this hub certainly takes the mystery out of the process and makes the whole idea very tempting. I loved reading this well-written hub with its excellent step by step instructions and clear pictures. There are recipes for both cake and yeast donuts, directions for glazing ,and tips to make sure you don’t goof. She makes it all sound so easy.
Asparagus and Cheese Tart by Mark Knowles
Local asparagus is in season now, so I actually made this one last week, using freshly harvested asparagus from a nearby farm stand. It was fabulous. The instructions were simple, easy to follow, and written in Marks’ inimitable breezy, no-nonsense style.
Best Chicken Salad Sandwich by Angela Harris
I came across this when I was browsing Angela's hubs. What a nice surprise. I had some leftover chicken in the fridge and had to go to the grocery store anyway so I gave it a try. The grapes and dried cranberries make all the difference. I ate it on whole grain bread with arugula instead of lettuce.
Quick and Easy Shepherd’s Pie by Sally’s Trove
Not only is this an excellent recipe for the ultimate comfort food, it is also a rollicking read about the background of the dish and ST’s emotional connection to it. So inspired is Sally’s Trove by Shepherd’s Pie that she has even written a poem about it. How cool is that?
Crab Cake Recipes by Crazyhorsesghost
This is so comprehensive—a hub devoted to crabs, crab lore ,and even crab videos in addition to seven mouthwatering recipes. These include recipes for crab cakes, crab casserole, and what sounds like absolutely great crab dip. I took one look at this hub and bookmarked it. The photos are beautiful. The chart explaining more than you ever wanted to know about crab anatomy is awesome. Last but not least, the in-depth list of tips for buying and preparing crab is superb. This one's a keeper.
Papi’s Chocolate Cake by Lili Dupré
This is a dense, European-style one layer chocolate cake much like one I used to have a recipe for. I was so happy to find it here on Hubpages and loved Lili’s story about her grandfather. I had to convert the measures and oven temp to the American system, but that really wasn’t so hard to do and the cake is delicious and really quite easy. Though the chocolate cake is my favorite, I really love all of Lili’s recipes. Each one comes with a personal vignette and they are simple yet elegant and sooooo French.

Yum! This is such a fuh hub, robie2. I love recipes too--I was thinking (too late) to put together a family recipe cookbook for my three kids at Lulu.com, print out three copies, and give it to them for Mother's Day. The idea hit me a few days before Mother's Day, but Christmas is coming (and I'll need that kinda time!) As soon as I work off yesterday's brunch for my mother-in-law, I'm going straight for that chocolate cake recipe!
Me too, Ellen, me too. mmmmmm chocolate. Thanks for reading and commenting. I worked up a real appetite doing this hub! And PG--I love your cookbook idea--just great.
Great collections from fellow hubbers, they are talented. I will definitely try them. Cheers :)
I love the way the personality of each hubber comes through in each recipe--uniquely hubpages I think. Thanks cgull and bon appetit!
Very good finds :)
What a lovely idea to feature other hubber's pages through a common theme! I particularly liked the look of Crazyhorsesghost's crab recipe. Now to find some unsuspecting crabs...
I have got to be in.
Some one gave me a confectionary cake book the other day it is 100 mm thick. with well over 1000 recipes I will find a couple of good one and bring them to you
The chocolate cake will do me for now! Mm Yeah!:D
Great idea for hub robie2!;)
Hello everyone-- I just got home from being "Mothers Day'ed" and found all your comments--delightful surprise --uninvited writer, pjd, Mr. M and CompuSmart. So glad you all stopped by to take a look.....let us know how the crab recipes work out pjd and Mr. M --1000 cake recipes??? wow! Glad you all liked it. It was fun to do--hmmmm might make it a series, like Compusmart's birthdays hmmmm:-)
I too love recipes. I especially love finding a recipe that I can make better or easier - make it my own. These recipes look wonderful. Hope people will try my two recipe hubs. http://hubpages.com/hub/Summer-Fruit-Salsa-and-Cin and http://hubpages.com/hub/Stupendous-Strawberry-Tort
Thanks
Hi Karen and thanks for leaving the links--they both look yummy to me--gonna try that salsa for sure. And hello Decrescendo--you are such gourmet yourself I just knew you would want to comment on this--your insights are always so keen and targeted:-)
And 6 more for me to add to my list of "must make & eat."!!!
You won't be sorry:-) Thanks for stopping by,Chef Jeff.
GREAT idea!!! Robie, this is a total thumbs up. I am getting hungry (3:00 p.m. in the afternoon is a tough time for me!)
Glad you liked it Steph. I'm having so much fun reading and trying Hubpages recipes. I may do another hub on them--maybe even a seriess-- I'm hungry too--almost dinner time though:-)
I love the stories behind recipes too! Food is such a wonderful way to bring people together. And I can't pass up trying that chocolate cake recipe... :)
Thanks Robie you're a dear! Awesome idea!
kindest regards Zsuzsy
It was your recipe that gave me the idea--so glad you like it:-)
Hannah-- I hope you try the chocolate cake(yum) and I agree with yout about food and people. Thanks for your visit:-)
Robie--love the Hub. I too am a "cookbook-aholic" and I've passed it on to my daughter. Definetly going to try a couple of these recipes!!
ruthie--good to see you....for my money reading about food is almost (but not quite) as good as eating . Glad you agree :-)
I too LOVE to read recipes, and usually take out cookbooks from the library. I have wanted to learn how to make a good sheperds pie, and tried making one about two years ago, and it was good, I think, but not that great. Not like the sheperds pie I would eat with my Irish ex.... and here is a recipe. I am going to give it a try!
Hi VS--yup what I love about Hubpages recipes is not onlhy do you get a great recipe you get a good story too, and in the case of Sally's Trove's Shepherd's pie--even a poem. Now how can you beat that? Good to see you.
Stories and Food,. a natural combination....
here's 2 recipes on here I love:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Extreme-Chocolate-Chip-Coo

http://hubpages.com/hub/Bobs-Pork-Roast--Recipe
there are tons more...no space to honor them all...
Thanks Marisue for the yummy additions--there are so many good ones on hubages and more every day--hope others will post their favs too....btw thanks for yours I love broccoli:-)
Robie, that is so very delicious. I could easily imagine to be invited to your house to lunch or dinner, where it would have been served any of these six dishes you love. You know the recipes very well, I believe, and you also cook as any other great chef. I would arrive with a big bouquet of red roses and some nice bottles of bubbly French champagne and some mature red wine, as well.
p.s.
That...that beautiful and tempting chocolate CAKE with strawberries on the top...
Robie,
Hubpages recipes, what a fabulous idea! Although I don't mind baking, I hate that ever persistent question, "What can I make for dinner?" YUCK These recipes make me wish I enjoyed cooking! lol I will have to admit the chocolate cake lured me in, as I can see it did others. Maybe you should compile a whole cookbook Hub of all favorite Hubpage recipes? That would be quite a thick book, don't you think?
Hi doghouse-- I've never been much of a baker myself, but I love o read about baked goodies almost as much as I like to eat them. I did bake that chocolate cake though. It was very easy.....yes there are so many good recipes on hubpages. It's fun to read them all and occasionally try one. Someone was talking about a Hubpages hardcopy cookbook awhile ago--that's what gave me the idea for this hub. Maybe the hubteam will do it one day. I'd buy one:-)
That cake looks sooo good! I'm not much of a cook, but I love to bake :) Great ideas for spicing things up.
Try the cake, abowie, it is a dense, one-layer Europoean style goodie and just fabulous. Thanks for reading and commenting. I love that there are so many interesting recipes to be found on Hubpages.
Yum! Will try some of these out, thanks!
Bon appetit:-) thanks for reading and commenting JO
Robie, thanks for the compilation. Loved the idea. Can I convince you to cook/bake for me someday? LOL :)
But of course--your house or mineLOL Maybe I'll just send you a virtual cake:-)
What a great idea for a hub! I see I'm not the only one who actually likes to read cookbooks rather than just cook from them! Cookbooks tend to have so much personality in them and all kinds of interesting tidbits and tips tucked here and there - also visually interesting. Maybe you should start a cookbook readers club...? We already know there are at least 2 of us! grin, denny
Denny, thanks so much for your great comment-- yup there are lots of us who love to read cookbooks and I think you put your finger on why-- the personality in them-- hey how about a Hubpages cookbook:-)
Somehow, Robie, I missed this Hub altogether. I found it by looking at your Hubtivity today. This Hub is awesome. Now I understand some of the words you have had for me.
I love the comments your readers made, especially Denny's, about the *personality* and the *tidbits*. Food is so much more than what you put in your mouth, isn't it?
Your fan, Sally
Hi ST-- glad you found this one....and even gladder you liked it. I'm really flattered considering that you write such wonderful food hubs-- filled with personal memories and fabulous recipes
yiour fan-- R2 :-)
This page is one of great interest . I like writing recipes .many times I trying substitution using some of my countries fruits and vegetables. I actually teach food and nutririon in Jamaica. Thanks for the new inspiration
Hi Juliet and thanks for reading and commenting. Like you I often switch recipes around to use what I have or what i like.
I'm hoping you'll be hubbing a bit about Jamaican food. I'd sure be interessted in knowing more about it. I used to live in Brooklyn where there were some wonderful Jamaican restaurants and I remember some great food though I'm pretty ignorant about the specific dishes and ingredients.
Thanks for the visit and the comment:-)
Thanks for this great hubpage. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner. Keep up the great posting so that everyone can enjoy great food.
Glad you liked it Alan and thanks for the kind words:-)
