Hubpages backlinking for Dummies
85Let me just get to the point.
I must have read a couple dozen different articles and hubs on back linking and non of them were very easy to understand because they all want to sound impressive all the while you are lost, you haven't learned a damn thing and you are still asking yourself what a back link is and how do you use it.
So I will give you the Sandy definitions and tell you the Sandy way to do it.
1. Back link, backlink, backlinking: a URL to a site page or site. Simple enough right? What's the point.
The point is to keep people on your pages or lead them to your site, not someone elses unless of course you are using referrals trackers but that is a different hub for another time. Let's say you wrote a hub on flat irons and then you wrote a hub on panties and another on computers.
How do you back-link?
You want to get as many backlinks into a hub as you can with out being misleading. I wouldn't put a link up for computers and hide the link under a word like panties. It doesn't work very well, well it might but I am not sure Hubpages would like that very much. But if you wrote a hub about flat irons and in the article you included stuff about women's apparel, you might embed the pantie hub under a word or phrase like "panties" or "matching pantie set". You get the point.
From there, go to the hub (open a new window so you don't lose your work) on panties and either click the green "share it" button at the bottom of hub or copy the URL in the address bar at the top of your computer.-note, the hubs have to be published first before you can share it-
If you chose to use the share button. Hubpages would have already assigned you a default URL Tracker. After you have clicked the green share it button, it will look like the below picture. Click the "link to this page" icon; the hub will automatically have the referral tracker embedded in the URL address to the hub so all you have to do is copy it.
Then go back to your hub you want to use it in, highlight the word you are using, click on that chain link in the tool bar in the "text capsule" and paste the URL in the address bar, and hit insert.
Viola! You have done your first backlink.
-Follow the steps below-
after you clicked the "link to this page" button.
Hightlight the word or pharse you want to link to.
Paste the URL in the URL spot.
Backlinking irrelevant hubs.
Now let's say you want to backlink to a hub that doesn't get much attention anymore and want to improve traffic there, what do you do?
Click on the "links" capsule in the tool bar on the right of the screen. Use the same rules from the above linking process, copy the URL code and paste it into the address and click "save". After you hit save, part of the hub content will appear.
Now you can do a couple of things with it. But I will give away my tips to maximizing backlinks in a single hub. However...*wink, wink, nudge, nudge*, if you use the tips and see that it works and you don't give me credit, I will kick your ass! J/K. :D
click "links" icon.
Paste URL address in URL spot.

Tips
1. Shrink the link box and place it somewhere in your hub. It doesn't matter where you put it, it will read like an advertisement. (note the link just to the right)
2. Break your hub content up into at least 2 different part using two different text boxes. In between Google will place ads wherever it can to optimize the space. In this space between text boxes, you can also place a back link. (note the link just above)
3. Use the RSS Feed. To find your RSS feed, go to your profile, right click on the "subscribe to" so and so's RSS Feed. In the drop down box there should be something that says, "copy link from location". Hit that one.
Then add a RSS feed somewhere on your hub. Paste your RSS URL in the box, check to make sure the link is working right. Pick how many feeds you want to show and hit save.
One thing I like to do is group all my hubs together into categories. Let's say health and beauty. I would back link as many of the health and beauty hubs as I can into the hub. If I chose about 4 hubs on health and beauty, I would then take the new hub I just wrote that includes all these back links and link the new one into each of the four that I had already used.
However, on each of them I will leave a backlink to a hub on say "computers". If someone wants to read about computers then you have provided a new exist for you reader without losing your reader. From there your readers will have a new set of linked hubs in that category and then a new exit for say...Flat Irons that Work!
Now your reader is over at computers. Then repeat this process for each link. In short, each hub has 2-3 backlinks to related articles and at least 1 to an unrelated category.
It gets confusing but if you just listen to Sandy... I can make this really simple.
Hope this is helpful.
Now that wasn't so hard was it?
Remember, the point of backlinking is to keep people on your sites or pages. This is the general rule to trafficing. The more traffic you get the more clicks you are likely to get.
The more clicks you get the more money you get, the happier you are. It took me forever to get it because everyone else wants to tell you all the boring stuff and then you have to read forever before you get the part you need. So here ya go. Good luck.

Your welcome. I hope this is helpful for you. :D
This was a very informative Hub. I hesitate to call myself a dummy but I found it enlightening.
In fact your last few hubs have displayed the same writing style, and connection to your readers that made you a Hub pages Guru
Smashing Good Show,
F&FFL
lol, thanks Jeromeo. Missed you around the hub. You certainly are not dummy. :D Guru? Not even close, but thanks!
Very Nice Tutorial.. Keep up the good work
this page should have been published long back which would have been very much helpful for me at that time... now i missed..
thanks illminatus, I will do my best.
Sorry hubber-2009, if I would have known, I would have been there for ya. :D
Guru you are :)
Well Misha, I must say I learned most of this from you, screen shots and all! Thanks Misha...The MetaGod you are indeed. :D
This is a nice hub. Self explanatory. Thanks.
good tips. You can out them in your blog too which has RSS
Thanks Philipo.
Ocbill... was that a question or a statement? In either case, yup!
Hi Sandra! All this while I was adding someone else's RSS feed to my RSS capsule. If I add my own RSS feed to my hubs it shows the same hubs every time in all the hubs. To avoid repetition, I used to put the outside links in my RSS capsule. Am I doing the right thing?
I don't know why you would add someone elses RSS feed to your hubs. I know the same Feed will show on all your hubs but that is good so you don't have to go back to them and update them every time you write a new hub.
So I have your RSS feed on my google homepage. Every time you write a new hub I see it on igoogle. Same thing with your own RSS Feed on your hubs. They automatically get updated whenever you publish a new hub. :D
You could use referral trackers to other hubs so that way you get a percent of their clicks. That.. you can set up to look like a feed.
If you changed the feeds to your own I am willing to bet that you will see an increase in traffic in like an hour. *wink*
And you are my favorite guru :)
Very helpful, I have printed it out to read during my break oh Guru ; )
Sweet BC, hey where did your pirate costume go? I was getting use to it.
Thank you for such clear instructions! The only way to improve would be to come over to my house and sit next to at my computer (LOL)
I am making a note of the name of this Hub so that I can find it again.
You are very welcome 2patricias. I would love to sit next to you on your computer. :D But you are no dummy! You can always bookmark the hub so it will get stored in your bookmarks under you account.
The bookmark link is in the grayish box under the profile image. When you are done with backlinking I hope you will come back for Hubpages Networking for Dummies, too. :D
Great the Mysteries of the backlinks are revealed! Now tell me... if you want to back link to the word "coupon" in your hub and you want to do it more than once is there another way to do it rather than individually for each word coupon? Kind of like a find and replace.. but more like find and backlink
Hello Ms Chievous (love the name btw), I am a little confused about the question you are asking but I will try to answer and if I am wrong you can tell me. ;)
Are you asking about using the same link under the word "coupon"? I am not sure that would do any of your work justice. However, if you wanted to backlink to different pages under the word coupon, that might be different. But no, I don't believe there is a "change all" tool in the tool bar to link every word "coupon" to the same place.
But when you use the chain link button after highlighting the word you want to backlink, the links you had previously used should be stored in the history.
It works sorta like how your history is stored in you web address bar on your computer. That is if that feature is enabled on your computer.
Hope this helps, if not I am happy to answer your questions.
Hi Sandra: Thx very much for that RSS feed tip. I went back to each of my hubs and changed it. Hope it works now. Thx again.
I just came across this, and have bookmarked it--thank you so much for this hub...
My husband and I are completely lost, trying to understand all of the things we need to learn!
Hi Anja. I am sure you will see an improvement in your traffic. I do hope you also took note of the 3-1 ratio of backlinking. Just think of it as a chain and you will do great! When is the next part of the series coming?
Your welcome TamCor. If you have questions please feel free to ask. I am always here for our fellow hubbers. :D
thanks for great tips. I like it.
Thanks prasetio30. Hope it was a help to you. :D
OM! These are just AWESOME instructions! Thanks sooo much Sandra! I'm very computer literate, but just hate wading through tons of instructions. You've made it simple, Simple, SIMPLE!! :)
Thanks Beth100. It was what I wanted to accomplish! I got so annoyed after a while reading page after page of nomenclature and definitions it made me want to puke or fall asleep. :D
An impressive article, very well done. :D
Thank you netadept, please share with the hubpages community if you would like. :D
Well written advice, thank you.
Bookmarked. You really made it simple. Thanks for sharing
Just what i need to learn backlinking. Great info. Thanks. Bookmarked too.
Thank you Jayb23 and Viryabo. I really appreciate the feedback and support. :D
Thanks for the backlinking tips. I will give it a try.
Finally, one I can understand.
Cheers to understanding! :D
A very excellent explanation! I like the part where you kept it in English and avoided all the geek talk. :)
One thing I would add (you already know this, but others might not) ... Never be misleading with your links, or Adsense might punish you.
For example, never call a link Fishing Tips and have it link to panties. Yeah, you'll get some clicks to your page, but you will also get the readers ire and might get reported for misleading links.
Also, remember that you can change the description under the link. Typically, it is the beginning of the hub, and you could change this text to write something that would relationally link the person over to the next one.
For instance ... you wrote a hub on great places to fly fish and you want to move the reader onto how to tie their own flies. However, your hub starts out with a list of what's needed, and this might not describe your hub very well.
So, change it to something like ... Plan on fly fishing all day? Then why not spend some of your off-time winding up a few of your own flies. This hub tells you how ...
An intro like this allows the reader how one hub directly relates to the other and gives them the benefit to reading it. :)
Good tip Yoshi. For a second I was thinking I got my links crossed on my profile... wait, did I? J/k. Thanks Yoshi.
Thanks for the great information.
Your welcome BISG Writer.
Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for!
Thanks, "I needed that!" Still learning the ropes here...having a problem with Adsense, need to work on that too!!! Great hub...I bookmarked it so I can use it step by step!
Awsome Montana Farm Girl. I don't know what problems you are having with adsense but I do have a couple hubs on using google adsense and hubpages together. It might help.
They are up on my profile so you can find them easily. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. :D
Thanks for this hub-great info. I was experimenting with the links capsule last night coincidentally, but want to try your methods. Thanks again!
Good for you rsmallory. Link capsules are my friends. :D
Dear Sandra am new to hub pages and i think this would help me to improve myself Thanks a lot
Hi finsofts, you are welcome! :D
Thanks for sharing. Great info!
Thanks - I'm still fairly new to all of this and sometimes my mind feels like it's going to explode with all of the information - it seems there is always something new to learn.
lol, don't worry Patti Ann, it gets easier after you have done it a few times. I think my brain only hurts when I am developing a new campaign. :D
It was nice to see this without all the geek speak. A job well done. Thanks.
Great info!
lol, geek speak. I... love...it! :D
When I read Hubs like this, I look for at least one good take-away of something I haven't known before. I found two on your Hub. One takeaway is shrinking the link box to have it read like an ad. I wondered how people did that.
The second take away is placing a link box between the text capsules. Clever.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for the screen shots, they're especially helpful.
You are very welcome.
Can i put the referal links on my blog to link to another hub page?
Yes absolutely finsoft, that would be ideal. :D
Thank you, did it, it worked well! Great article
Awesome nunpuns! Now that is what I like to hear! woot!!!
the best one , Guru you're
thanks tgpmaker, that a very kind thing to say. :D
You taught me a lOT! Thank you
You are welcome ladybird! When you are ready you can move on to the other parts of the series... if you even need to. ;) *that was wink*
great hub
I was curious how google establishes ranking when you only backlink to your own hubs within the hubpages domain
does it matter? or should you also backlink offsite to get your ranking higher
or should you do both
Hi 3bagsfull,
Hubpages is specific about the number of outbound links to external sites are allowed on a hub. Linking to external sites isn't bad as long as it is a really good one, gov. sites, "official sites" etc.
Hubpages will also tag you if you keep linking to the same external site on lots of different hubs.
Hubpages gets a good ranking keeping people linking within the site. Looking at my own stats on analytics, I average about 3 pages views per visitor.
This means that when someone lands on my page, they might click on an embedded link which goes to another one of my hubs or on a link I left floating on the right etc...
Either way, when I get a new viewer, it is likely that I will get an average of 3 hub views from 1 visitor.
Now, hubpages.com is linked to every hub. This month I got over 10,000 visitors, over 20,000 pages viewed x that by the number of hubbers add up all their hub views etc...
Well that is a lot of traffic going to one site and having all that traffic coming to hubpages.com and staying in hubpages...
So yes it does matter that you keep your links inside hubpages. If I link to another hubber it's because I feel they have something to offer, or I really want to share them. But for the most part, I try to keep you all within my hubs. muhahahahaha.lol.
Linking off site is terrible unless it is a good one. government sites etc... no one wants to stay on a gov. site but they do want to see an official stat. and come right back. *wink*
Fantastic information for us newbies. I am TRYING to focus more on backlinking and this has given me some much needed information. Thanks for sharing, Sandra!
Fantastic wordscribe. Always happy to help. :D
great hub
Finally worked it out Sandra. Thanks for making it so easy to follow.
GodBless.
Awesome, that is what I like to hear. :D
Interesting, Hubpages will ding my score if I only link to my offsite webpage? What if I go back and edit my hubs and change up the linking, adding links to my other hubs but still leaving my offsite links as well?
I don't have high rankings, and I don't get many visits... but I write about digital cameras and camera repair so nobody wants to read that anyway. =(
Thomas
Hi darntoothysam, This is what I would do. I would put your website on your profile page. Then either suggest that they can find more information on your profile page or link to your profile page. Then you don't have to worry about it or you can write a hub on camera repair with one link to your website and link your other hubs to that one.
This was extremely helpful Sandy. Thank you, as I will book mark this. I was embarrassed to ask what an RSS feed is, but now I won't have to:) Thanks.
dohn121, you should never be embarrassed to ask. :D
Thanks for the info. I'm trying to learn quick!
Sandra, thanks for the article - most informative.
One thing though, what about backlinking to a hub from an external webpage. Do you have any tips for doing that?
I always thought backlinking is like adding the "links" capsule in your hub then placing the URL there. Now I know better. Thanks for the hub!
Hi Ripsnorta, yes. The easiest way to backlink (for me anyways) from an external site to hubpages is to use the RSS feeds. Hubpages has an easy to use widget you can use on your site and there are plenty of ways to go about it. You can read about several ways http://hubpages.com/hub/Hubpages-Networking-for-Du other than that, you can make regualar embedded links in the text. Hope this helps.
Hi emievil, you weren't too far off. :D
Thanks sandra, you explained backlinking really well, after reading your hub I realized that I did not fully understand the term myself and now I am going to utilize it on my hubs. Good work!
Thanks for this good hub, I'll make a try.
Good backlink exposition. I like the point about the position of the backlink; it doesn't matter as much as people might think because it's Google we are trying to impress.
Well possibly for you nicomp but I don't know that I am trying to impress google. As far as I know and all that I have read and noted myself, where you place your links does seem to matter.
Statistically, placing links outside of the context does better. :D
I think this was a great hub...I am not sure if it was all of the insightful info or seeing all of the "panties" talk. I will let you know after my cold shower.
I a person who (don't laugh) took three years to learn file-management on a computer. So, for me, I don't expect any of this back-link stuff to sink in very soon.
But, you have opened up paths of exploration for me. I, guess, where I stumble on "getting-it" are not understanding what the results should look like if I have been successful with implementing the procedures.
I know what you state is probably a lot easier than it seems, but, for me these things are always a tough climb. I think I have a thick head because nothing sinks in as fast as it should.
I'm actually going to bookmark this article so I can read it over and over.
So, I am bookmarking it. Is there a way I could assist you by linking through from one of my six articles I've written about Adsense, or, should I be more concerned with back linking for just me....?
I always feel lost.
No worries pinktaxi, it took me about a year before it sunk in.
Definitely back link just for you. When you figure out how to receive commissions through referrals, then I would say, sure link to me.
I think it is a lot easier to just do it step by step instead rereading every detail. I believe, that when you use the "chain link" icon, the hypertext link, then you'll go. Oh! lol
Please let me know if you have any questions, always happy to help. And thanks for the offer. :D
This was great...bookmarked it as well :O) too many senior moment to remember things readily
lol, gotta love a senior moment. I have them and I am not even middle aged yet! :d
Informative and beneficial hub. You've just collected another fan. Well presented, Sandra!
Thank you Sandra for the great information. I know what a backlink is but wasn't too sure how to construct one....now I know! Thanks again. I am off to start using your suggestions!
Hi Christianesk, you got one too.
Hi Rose, Your welcome. :D
Thanks Sandy for considering the "dummies" of this world and making the information clear and simple. Now I will apply the information and wait for good results.
Your welcome dummy! LOL, good luck.
What a great hub my next stage is to try some back linking and you have explained it in a very easy to follow way. I will be back to tell you how I have gotten along. Thankyou.
Yes, please be sure to let me know how it works out for you. :D
Sandy,
You really summed it up, and for more topics that just this one when you said
….all the while you are lost, you haven't learned a damn thing and you are still asking yourself what a back link is and how do you use it.
Where’s the HubPages suggestion box? I think there should be something like HubNuggets, with the voter being new hubbers of 1 year or less, or those with AdSense acct less than one year, to vote on Hubs that are most helpful for getting started and building success on HubPages. A new batch of winners every week or month, with winner would be fine. BUT they should keep a rolling ranked list of the top helpful hubs arranged in topic areas: getting started, backlinks, affiliates etc.
Rose Mary
Hi Mary, I think that is a good idea. You can suggest a feature in the forums under suggest a new feature or report a problem forum.
Done!
I'm backlinking now! Thanks Sandy.
Wow. Fast and too the point. Nice to see it all laid out at once.
Sandra, Thanks so much for this great information! I am just starting with hub pages even though I signed up a while back and this is extremely helpful. I will check out your other great hubs too! Thanks again!
Hey welcome to hubpages then Wendy. I wish you the best and if you have any questions just ask. I am usually always around. :D
Yippee! Easy to follow and step-by-step in layman's terms, that's great, thanks.
Good job, Sandy and much appreciated.
very nice information keep up the good work.
Sandra, you're a lifesaver. I've been confused up until now, but thanks to you I am now enlightened. Well done
Great help thank you. I've been totally confused myself and you have really done a good job of teaching me.
Juliet
Thanks one2get2no, scarytaff, and Julietdupreez. Backlinking is super easy and super important. :D Good luck.

Cheers Sandy, its a bloody minefield out there what with backlinks, anchor texts, cpp, social networking and God knows what else.

Brilliant tips, thank you! After reading this hub, I've just added my RSS feed to all my hubs and improved my back links. Can't wait to see the results, thanks so much!

Hey maybe I finally figured out the back link thing. Thanks for making it clear and concise.
Great Info, thanks for sharing
You are welcome, thanks for reading. :D Happy Hubbing.
So I was thinking I had to come up with backlinks to outside places. I have been using the RSS feeds for my own pages - am I good?
Sandra, this is surely great information. I just started reading and already use some of it and it actually Works! I could not believe. All this time was trying to find all these information. Thanks a million.

Hi, thanks for hub. Will have to be more organised re back-linking. Putting off trying to get head round RSS until later!
You really did "just get to the point" - thank you!
Brilliant
Would never have cottoned on to RSS feed system. Many thanks!
Welcome guys and gals! :D
Nice and easy hub to follow - I hope there will be more 'Hubs for Dummies'. Makes things really clear.
Thanks, I am doing it now!
This is something i need to do thanks
This hub was totally helpful - I read few hubs about backlinking but I guess I did need Backlinking for Dummies :) Thanks for the info!!
great hub you have been very helpfull to me. I'm fairly new and not too computer savvy. This was a great write.
Sandra, I am back again. thank you, thank you again. I have managed to accomplish a lot within a very short time with your great information you just provided in the hub. Very helpful. I couldn't have done it without that straight forward instructions you just gave. Well done.
Excellent! It makes me feel good to know. :D
Great job! Enjoyed the article and actually learned something.. Now, let's see if I can put it to use..lol :)
Another great researched article. Looks like I'll be coming back for more!
Thank you for a very informative hub :)
I'm bookmarking it to read later as I'm fairly new and finding all the info on the whole site a little overwhelming !
I'll come back when I can hopefully take it all in & try to put it into practice.
Hi Suki, it seems overwhelming at first but once you start doing it, it seems so easy you will wonder why you thought it was so confusing to begin with. Good luck! :)
Great Hub! I just read it and did my first 2 backlinks! Wahooo Yeah me! Thanks Sandra:)
Yeah you!!!! YW. :)
Hi sweets! Thank you for this great info. I wondered how I could do this. x
Backlinking is also for search engines. It's the true meaning of "Inter" as in "Internet"
I like your tips about the links capsule and using the panties as example haha. I accidentally used the links capsule because I'm new, and I deleted it because it seemed out of place -- now thanks to you! -- it was useful all along, couldn't recognize an opportunity like you did
Thank you thank you thank you. I wish I'd read this ages ago. I think I've got some decentish hubs, and have just started learning about backlinking and RSS feeds. I've been diligently linking to external sites and other people's RSS - Duh!!! I am going to spend the rest of the evening putting that right. Then, I'm going to learn more about referrals.
This was a fantastic hub, and I am a complete dingbat!
An update - I managed to ammend 7 of my hubs last night before family committments took over. This morning all seven are showing a rise in traffic. Thank you
No beating around the bush...I like that! >.< Great hub!
