Million Dollar Rip Off

Jackson Pollock's " Number 5" painting sold in 2006 at a private auction for $140 million dollars! The artist painted it in 1948 and he died eight years later at the age of 42. No painting can be worth that amount. The dead artist did not get anything out of it nor will any future artist get a scholarship!

http://most.expensive.net/painting-in-world

Can spending $140 million on a single painting be justified? Good taste cannot be bought. Art is about life.

Can I get a million dollars for this painting?

The Struggle

Society gives dead painters, composers and musicians priority over living artists. Imagine a few artists have entered the room but no one notices them because the room is filled with posthumous artists!

Struggle is a part of life and it comes in many forms. Nevadans expect to see paintings of cows frolicking on the sagebrush and any artist who doesn't paint cows may feel kicked to the curb. The artist should brake the mold! Break it now!

Studio executives refuse to read screenplays from unknown writers. The executives equate unknown with untalented. They are wrong! The screenwriter should get even and make their film.

The Free Hug Movement

In 2004 an Australian named Juan Mann discovered a wonderful way to reach out to people. He offered free hugs to strangers.  This is good idea for bad economic times, for people struggling in a wealthy society, for artists, especially for everyone!

Poeple holding "Free Hug" signs offered hugs to people in England, Croatia and numerous locals around the world.

http://www.freehugscampaign.org/

Is Posthumous art over valued?

Does Society focus too much on dead composers, musicians and painters?

  • Yes, society's focus on the dead is unhealthy because art is about life.
  • No. It's fun to see this kind of competetive bidding.

Are Tragedy and Fame Connected?

Life is fragile. An artist experiences success and then endures a lifethreatening event.

Chuck Close is a famous painter known for huge photo realistic portraits.  In 1988 he suffered a blod clot so severe that it paralyzed him from the neck down. He recovered and is able to paint with a brush tied to his wrist.  He works collaboratively on paintings and prints.  People are drawn to him now more than ever.

http://enwikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Close

http://www.chuckclose.coe.uh.edu

Dale Chihuly is a famous glass artist whose career was going well then suddenly in 1976 he was in a lifethreatening car accident.  He flew through the windshield his face was badly cut and he lost sight in his left eye.  What did he do?  He recovered and works with people on making the most beautiful glass chandeliers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Chihuly

There is a tragedy in Sweden. A model commited suicide after posing naked for an artist.  Were there any warning signs?  Could anything have been done to prevent it?  Horrible but true, now the artist will be more famous!

Warning: always try to find attention from good deeds.

Hugs are they just for best friends and family?

Would you dare hug an artist?

  • Yes.
  • No, because they are creepy and temperamental.
  • Maybe, it depends on the artist.

Thought Provoking Art Video

Nudes

Why do nudes fascinate painters? They are fascinated with the human form the way the contours thrust into negative space.

Mary Beth Mc Kenzie from NY paints people dressed as well as naked. Her nudes are interesting in that they seem to be intimate, lovers are intertwined and they don't mind being watched.

Performance Art in The Buff

Are Peta members artists or protesters?

When protesters crouch naked in cages in front of a restaurant is it art or protest? The bare skin offers the viewer something to look at but doesn't the message get lost in the sheer nakedness?

Music: Defining the Moment

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is an iconic piece for the sound of horror and the listener expects to see Dracula rise out of a dusty coffin. When the organist stomps on the pedal the instruments almost purrs. The music is lovely but it doesn't describe life today.

Restlessness

Is it fair to call  Carl Johan Landgren's "Mobil Till Alphonso" avante guard? He surprises the audience by including ambient noise with his somber classical piano piece. Someone in the background fights the zipper off his down filled coat, squeaks on a parquet floor and coughs. The restless background contrasts with the somber piano piece and adds tension as if someone is waiting for an important phone call.

Modern

Rap artists describe life that revolves around them without looking away from the injustice and hardships. If they don't tell the story who will?

Noise artists explore music without inhibition. Lucifitias's "Ritual Xul" rages a violent storm and the music feels like brain floss. Rosa Eivissa's "Water" declares that bathing is a sacred ritual.

Artists Among US

Everyone buys groceries. Some buy 20 lbs of dog food at a time and others sample dirty grapes in the produce section. Some of these people paint and some tweak a Moog or Korg synthesizer. Artists walk among us.

Reaching out is a two way street. Give it a try.

Are you Old School, Digital Maniac or Eclectic

What is your favorite instrument?

  • Old school acoustical. I pluck my guitar, stroke my cello and bang my bongos.
  • What instruments? Of course I'm a digital maniac. My studio is a labrynth of wires, amps, controllers, inverters and patches, drivers, nano Korg, Kaossilator, FL loops, synths, midi controls etc. .
  • Eclectic, I love the Kaossilator as much as my accordion.

Raven, I love your self portrait. I don't know if it will earn you a million dollars in your lifetime, but it must feel great that you can create something like that!

$140 million, who gets the money, surely his family should get some. It does seem that you are worth more when you're dead. Even authors. Sad, eh?

Hi C.C. Riter. You are an absolute doll. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I like the painting of the lady in the bathroom because she has a mystery lover and you captured her tan lines very well. I love your self-portrait, even with the eyes closed!  I too think you captured "her" blushing from an unexpected compliment.

As for the obscene prices post-humous paintings go for, it's just **wrong** that an artist has to be dead before his/her paintings become valuable.  Does anyone but me find it strange there isn't a way to ensure heirs get the biggest chunk of auction/sale proceeds, no matter how many times a painting is resold???

Raven King profile image

Thanks for the complements JamaGenee. You certainly brought up a good question! True, why hasn't this topic appeared? Huh....

(hug) neat hub! Great portrait, by the way. I too am fascinated by tasteful nude art. Interesting stuff.

I've experienced a life threatening event and its changed me all for the better. I'm not a painter of colors, I'm more of a painter of words. Oh, and noise, as you so lovely mentioned. =)

A lot of people just don't get what noise or industrial is about...

Hi Raven, what a beautiful idea. Can I share a hug with you then? (((hug))) I hear that a lot..how a person's work is more valuable when we are dead and it is a pity. That is why in my hub about "What Would I Do if I have a Million Dolllars?" I included the construction of a local theater building to support local artists with the theater arts. And maybe we can have an art gallery in the building too. Hmmm..that would be a good thing to visualize. Thanks Raven... :-)

A very enjoyable and thought providing hub Raven King, and another reason to confirm my beliefs, that the art world went potty along long time ago with the pricing of paintings, art etc which was probably started by someone who had a collection of such works, and the power to make these prices sour at the beginning!

My local artist, works in the nude while other artists paint her! Im now going for some hugs!!:D

Raven King, thanks for the hugs, and here are some right back at you! xoxo Compu-smart's tale reminds me of the occassion when I took my son to visit open houses at a local art festival. Being observant, the little guy happened to notice that some of the nude portraits on the walls were of the lady who was stewarding. Small boys voices tend to carry when they're trying to attract your attention. It wasn't long before everyone in the room knew that the woman on the sofa was also the naked model on the walls!
