California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato Dry Cat Food

Ask Susan Peters Cat Food Review

I have trouble getting behind a pet food which the company has a class action filed against them for false advertising.

Natural Flavor. (comment deleted)

Chicken Fat - Because manufacturers need to ensure that dry foods have a long shelf life (typically 12 months) to remain edible through shipping and storage, fats used in pet foods are preserved with either synthetic or "natural" preservatives. Synthetic preservatives include butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (comment deleted), and ethoxyquin. Animal fat is used to entice your pet to eat a product which they normally would not eat.

California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato provides a unique single source animal protein that will sure to please even the most selective cat. 100% herring and herring meal are used as the only animal protein source. Herring is highly palatable and an excellent source of Omega 3 essential fatty acid.

Any clue why they use Chicken Fat in the formula? This is direct from their website: http://www.naturapet.com/tools/ingredient.asp?alph

Chicken Fat

Chicken fat is obtained from the tissues of chickens in the commercial process of rendering or extracting.

Chicken fat is the highest of all animal sources in linoleic acid (over 23%), an important element for skin and coat health. Because Natura uses such high-quality chicken, this is a high-quality source of fat.

Does not exactly read as something bad now does it? Guess what? Ever since changing our dog from Lamb Meal he has soft fur for the first time in his 9+ years of living. Oh and we no longer have to clean his ears. The California Natural Chicken & Rice has changed him so much that he now meets us at the door when we arrive home, no more chewing his feet etc. He is healthy. My cat eats the EVO formula and also one big, healthy boy.
