The Humvee

The Humvee is actually the short name for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle abbreviated as HMMWV. This vehicle has become an unavoidable part of the United States Army. It is a military 4WD vehicle which was made by the AM General for the US Army. This vehicle replaced many then used vehicles the M151 , the M561 , their M718A1 and M792 ambulance, the CUCV, and some other light trucks with the United States military. The humvee gave way to he present hummer which is used as a civilian vehicle.

In the war field

The HMMWV was designed mainy designed for personnel and light cargo transport. The basic HMMWV had no armor or protection against NBC(Nuclear-Biologic-Chemical) threats. Losses became comparitively low in conventional operations, like in Desert Storm. Even though the humvee was not designed to give protection from intense small arms fire and anti-tank rocket propelled grenades, it offered a kind of protection.

Later on , the army realized the need for a more protected humvee and this led to the development of the M1114, which is an armored version of Humvee that could withstand small arms fire. The production of M1114 was limited since 1996. This design was superior to the M998 whose engine was larger, more powerful turbocharged, air conditioning, with strengthened suspension system. Also it had an armored area for passengers which was protected using bullet-resistant glass and hardened steel. With the increase of guerrilla warfare and direct attacks in Iraq, AM General diverted majority of the manufacturing power of the company into production of the humvees.
