74What is a Hypoallergenic Dog?
There is no such thing as an allergen-free dog, not even a designer dog breed. All dogs produce allergens. A hypoallergenic dog, therefore, is a dog that produces or secretes less irritating allergens than others. Most people who are allergic to dogs have a reaction to a protein manufactured by the sebaceous glands, found in the saliva and dander.
The good news is that, contrary to popular belief, hairless dogs are not the only available option for people with dog allergies. There are quite a few dog breeds with fur that are recommended for households or families that include someone with a dog allergy or other environmental sensitivity. These dogs have short hair, shed very little, and/or have a single coat (meaning no thick, insullating undercoat). As you can see from the list of hypoallergenic dog breeds below, as well as the pictures provided, there is a great variety to choose from in terms of size, appearance, and temperment. If you're in search of a hypoallergenic dog, you're sure to be able to find a breed to meet your own needs.

oh cool, i never thought there are such hypoallergenic dogs..and just this morning i watched a show where they are looking for the right breed of dog for the Obama family to take in the whitehouse...funny! maybe your list here would take the interest of Obama..hehe

I was glad to see the Chinese Crested on your list. As Annemaeve said in the forum, it is a kind of creepy looking dog. However, I did get to know one quite well (along with his sister, who was the fluffy variety), and came to love his temperament and personality.

Great hub. Great list. Great photos! So glad to see such a variety of terriers -- I grew up with Wire Haired Fox Terriers and just LOVE them (but too high strung for the White House).
If they get a Cairn Terrier they can name it *Toto* as a reminder they are not in Illinois anymore!

No dog is truly hypoallergenic for everyone. People are typically allergic to the dander not the hari, so it doesn't matter whether the dog is hairless or not. And, poodles aren't even a true hypoallergenic dog, which I realize is actually contrary to popular belief.
Great hub Maddie for those that want a dog but have allergies. I think the Havanese are just the cutest dogs, I saw a program on them and they were just so adorable!!

Re-read the intro. ;) I stated there that there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog, and that it is in fact the dander and saliva that most people are allergic to.
As far as poodles, they may not be the MOST hypoallergenic, but they are still considered so because they have a single coat and shed less than many other breeds.
Hi Maddie, Great article. I never thought of a dog being hypoallergenic till the Obama's started looking for a dog. We had a Samoyed, and I was not really surprised to them on the list but just beware that when spring hits they literally dump their coat. A good groomer and a day at the palor can relieve the mess. It really is like a huge snow storm. Best animal we ever had though.

I have a toy poodle. Before Chloe, all I had to do is look at a dog, and WHAM, tearing eyes, sneezing. I love my little girl..and she is just as clingy to me.. she likes to sleep on my head or on my legs! As a matter of fact... she needs to get off my elbow right now, I can't type well!

About the dogs, funny thing, I have been full of dog allergies all my life, sniffs all day. So, no more dogs for twelve years; then a Samoan mutt fell in my lap two weeks old. Looks like a lab/pitbull mix and lord knows what else. One year later, she is adorable and I have no allergies whatsoever. Cannot figure out if this is the type of dog, or if I am the one who changed?
My wife and I have to labs a black and yellow. I have to tell you this amazing story. My black lab had so many hot spots ..bleeding all the time. Went to the vet spent hundreds of dollars meds and nothing worked. The a friend introduce me to Melaleuca Oil and my God within 1 week they all healed and now the hair is starting grow back. Great Hub Maddie! Funnily enough I was only talking about this with my husbands yesterday. We had a Jack Russel who past away about a year ago and the kids are desperate for another one. The last one we have was a rough coat and he would shed ALOT of hair, so we were thinking of getting a short coat this time around, hoping it may shed a little less hair. Other then that we migh get a Moodle (cross between a Maltese & Poodle).
