I Once Had A Naughty Dog Called Charlie

I once had a dog...... a dog called Charlie. She was a big, beautiful, gentle and smart Ridgeback whom we all totally adored; despite her errant ways. When my boys and I get together we all have "Charlie" stories; I guess a lot of people have a truly special animal in their lives who holds the key to much remembered and enjoyed fun and laughter.

Well this is probably the first of many Charlie stories so while being one of the funniest it is also one of the worst!

Charlie (Charlotte) was exceptionally hard to keep inside the back yard. She was very strong and would barrel through, and I mean literally straight through anything that barred her way to whatever adventure she had in mind for the day. So it got to the stage where (pre restrictive dog laws) I would let her out for a romp at about 5.30am and call her back at about 6.00am before the runners hit the streets. She knew the rules and would often be back in the front garden just before 6.00am.

This particular morning I looked out the upstairs window to see our fearless lion dog stalking someone / something unknown on the other side of the hedge.

She was slinking along the inside of the trees and the hedges keeping a close eye on what - I couldn't quite see what interested her so intensely. But it turned out that her " prey" was an unsuspecting jogger.

Quite obviously she thought he was a lion and she was doing her duty by the family keeping the enemy at bay - silently.

The odd glimpse of the jogger showed him to be dressed most finely in pristine white shorts, beautiful expensive jogging shoes, and a crisp white top, similar to the ones with the crocodile motif, I think they are Ralph Lauren or could that be LaCrosse - I will have to wait for the man of the house to return so that I can ask him and make the appropriate correction. He also had on expensive wrap around sun glasses while plugged into an ipod. Quite the athletic dandy now I come to think about it.

So there he was jogging along minding his own business whilst being totally unaware that out of his eye range (but not mine) there was this dog very stealthily stalking him

Whilst I knew there was no way she would hurt him I was nearly dying with embarrassment because I knew that short of opening up the window and waking up the entire neighbourhood there was nothing I could do. I was too far away and time was running out.

Then she struck.

Straight out of the bushes, through the trees she went, shooting up behind him - and goosed him right up those beautifully ironed creases to where the sun does not shine - he yelled loudly and took off at speed while Charlie went in opposite direction shooting home as fast as she could; literally sailing over the back fence.

By the time I picked myself up off the floor and got downstairs to let her in I swear she was laughing fit to bust. To the best of my knowledge this particular jogger did not pursue his athletic endeavours in our street again. Something I never could understand.

Thanks agvulpes - poor chap I honestly did feel sorry for him but at the same it was really funny - I really like these videos particularly the one where the "dog whisperer" puts them all to sleep by singing "Goodnight Sweetheart" - and they actually settle down. amazing. cheers.

Drat! I had a big, long(winded) comment all done and my screen froze so I lost it. Here goes from memory:

Loved the story about Charlie, that was funny! Also loved the vid with the man singing the puppies to sleep, that was just adorable. Thought it was funny too, when the cow goosed the dog.

Really enjoyed the hub, Annie. Oh yeah, I also said that I had never heard of a Ridgeback before, so you've educated me, too! You are an excellent hubaholic!

Thanks Em., is it time for sleep where you are???? lol

Shirley Anderson - the ridgebacks are incredibly sweet dogs unless they are treated badly or raised to be nasty (as with all dogs i guess!) and she took the cake for sweetness - in fact she was almost like a nanny to both my sons - she guarded them so well - they (ridgebacks) came from Sth Africa originally and were bred to hunt lions - so it's no wonder they have such big hearts and so much stamina... oops storm coming - got to get off. cheers and thanks for commenting ...cheers

Hi, Ajcor. Don't know how I missed this one. Charlie sounds like a barrel of laughs. We had a little terrier when I was a kid, and my parents could not for the life of them keep the dog in the fenced-in back yard. So the vet told them to take one of those chain things with the big cork screw on one end that you screw into the ground, and screw it into a big log instead. So on a night they were having guests over for dinner, they took the vets advice and screwed the chain thing into a big log inside the fenced-in yard.

When a couple of guests arrived, they were laughing. My dad asked what was so funny? They said, "you wouldn't believe what we just saw. Over on the next block, we saw a little dog pulling this big log attaced to his neck, just running down the street as happy as you please."

Thanks for the story!

Thanks Chris - she really was a funny dog but because she was so big people were a little wary which in some ways was good as I was then raising my boys by myself and we suffered from peeping toms, stalkers etc... but Charlie was a stalwart and none of us came to any harm when she was on duty - a truly great dog ....cheers and thanks for popping in...

By the way, I "pointed the bone" at somebody--a rude clerk-- a few days ago. It felt really good!

Animals have a keen sense of people, don't they? I love your description of the athletic dandy (tee hee). How exactly do you think she picked this particular jogger out to be goosed (tee hee again)?

We have to love the spirited ones, don't we? Charlies sounds like a love. Thanks for sharing this story and the videos. MM

Hi nice pet lover....

so you "pointed the bone"  Chris... witch bone lol- is he still at work?  just kidding...

MM nice to see you - he had jogged up our street a couple of times and maybe she just plain thought he needed her close attentions...she was most spirited, funny and loved ... she ended up getting heart worm - don't know if you have that in the US but it is a very cruel disease carried by mosquitoes from dog to dog - and in Charlie's case she was one of the first in Canberra to get it at 13 years of age - some individual in our street (vet wouldn't tell me where this individual lived!) took his dog to Queensland and came back with the dog infected by the heart worm and because of the expense (thousands /arsenic involvement) wouldn't have it treated - so goodbye Charlie, she was just too old and frail by the time it was diagnosed....thanks for your comment.

you too tring-sandra?
