Ave Maria has been throughout my life, one of my favourite and most sustaining hymns - I grew up in a boarding school with Irish nuns and have long, loved these glorious songs.

So as an honoring to the "Ave Maria" I have decided to dedicate this hub page to the many versions that I have miraculously found on utube.

So thank you first and foremost to all those brilliant singers who have sung the Ave Maria - to Utube and Hub pages and of course to all the wonderful utube contributers.

I can and will now absolutely indulge; steep myself in the emotive, listening pleasure this music gives to me and no doubt to many others.

I have derived a great pleasure putting this page together and I hope that these video clips give you as much pleasure as they have me!.

enjoy

And Again For Singing Along You Also Need The English Version!

Ave Maria! Maiden mild!

Listen to a maiden's pleading from these rocks, stark and wild,my prayer shall be wafted to thee. we shall sleep safely till morning, though men be ever so cruel. o Maiden, see a maiden's distress, O Mother, hear a suppliant child.

Ave Maria, undefiled! When we upon this rock lie down to slumber, and they protection covers us, The hard stone will seem soft to us. If Though smilest, the scent of roses will float Through this murky cavern, O Mother, hear a child's petition, O maiden, 'tis a maid that calls!

Ave Maria, Maiden pure, the demons of the earth and air, drien forth by thy gracious glance cannot stay here with us. we will camly bow to fate Since they holy comfort hovers over us; Mayest though be favourably inclined to the maiden, To the child that pleads for her father!

It's certainly a beautiful song, and very moving when properly sung. I've never seen the Latin words written down before, and it's interesting to see the English version (not a direct translation, I suspect, although my Latins pretty shaky!)

Thanks for sharing.

Sorry all for not replying sooner - I  have been away at the coast.

Thank you  for your  comment  funnebone -it's good to share

Amanda re. the translation from latin to english- the english does seem somewhat wordy compared to the latin - a bit more "flowery" even so a very, as you say "moving" song. I particularly liked the yo yo ma version.

 Thanks Dottie - I thought I hit gold also.cheers.

AJ, I need to be back home to listen to all these, can hardly do it in the office with everyone around -- but I'm dying to, now!! I'll be back to comment, I'm a big fan of Sara Brightman and Yo Yo Ma, so I'm already salivating... in a manner of speaking!!

Thanks Elena - funny thing is only yesterday I had to update the utube links because all of Sarah Brightman's Aves were cactus so to speak and I had to find replacements....so that was good timing....so all I can say is enjoy....

I met Luciano and got on with him like a house on fire - a very generous and warm-hearted person. I used to sing in a Pop band - my friend said to afterwards, "Only you could go up to HIM and say, 'I'm a singer as well' !!!" I told him he was 'better than Elvis' and he was very complimentary about Elvis, clearly a hero of his. We talked about Mario Lanza and what a great inspiration he was to him when he was younger. I told him that he was the greatest singer in the world and he was very modest about this; he mirrored comments he made on a chat show about being good at 3 things - football, singing and baking bread ! I sort of rescued him from a mob of fans and he was grateful. I told him that people were impressed with the power of his voice, but I said it was his tenderness that wiped the floor with his audience. 'It takes abig man to cry' - what a voice, what a guy. Stuart Evans thank you for your lovely, generous comment - I grew up on a diet of Mario Lanza - must have seen the movie of his life at least five times. Beautiful, beautiful voice and of course Luciano is a total star - how lucky are we to have been able to hear these people sing....hope you do as well with your singing...sure you will with your attitude...cheers

Dear Ajcor,

Thank you for your kind response. I can also recall Luciano talking about Di Steffano and Gigli; he said he was Di Steffano's biggest fan - he had a tear in his eye. I was signed to Eurythmics many years ago and I really should have put Luciano in touch with Annie Lennox.. I have watched our operatic hero on u tube with Bryan Adams etc., and he is so generous to his fellow performers. i find him quite mesmerising. There's one little clip ( I wish I could refer you to it but I have forgotten the link) where he is giving a music lesson to his parrot ! I wish I had met him in his villa, sampled his cooking and chatted about football, music .. the world. Sooner or later he would have to sing - canyou imagine: he could sing the telephone directory and make it sound wonderful. I know that when he did give the odd master class, there was standing room only and passers-by would often get in for free -probably much to the annoyance of others ! Others tell me that he was a 'little devil' for not learning his lines, rehearsals etc... but I say he kept it 'fresh' and he really lived those tunes and that's what sets him apart. His inclusive nature is why he was The One to introduce opera to a new generation. Surely Mario Lanz and Caruso, in the context of their generations, are the only ones to compare re this impact beyond the everyday opera audience. I have met so many Pop stars who think they're cool but few as nice as our hero Luciano who really was generous, kind and humble with it too. My favourite rendition by 'our Luciano' which is how we should really think of him is La Donna e Mobile, largely because he doesn't overcook it, he knows it is fun and can get that across to his audience. It's like passing a baton as Luciano and I agreed; each generation adds something and hands it on to the next generation. You can see at the end of this rendition of Ave Maria, his own astonishment at the beauty of Schubert's lovely tune - it's still fresh to him. Goal , Luciano... Goooaaaal !!!!

Dear Amanda Severn, Believe it or not, the lyrics of Ave Maria were written by Sir Walter Scott ( author of Ivanhoe) . Yes, that blew my mind as well when I first found that out !!!

Regards, Stuart E
