I Lost Three Pounds this Week
80
One Week Down, Lots More to Go
Today marks is the one week anniversary of my decision to join Weight Watchers, and I am down three pounds.
Yay! I guess.
Really I was hoping for more drama than three pounds, but hey, three pounds is 12 sticks of butter. I am carrying around 12 fewer sticks of butter on my butt now, so you know what? I'll take it.
It wasn't really that hard. You can choose between two programs at WW. On one, you count up 'points' that are assigned to every food imaginable. You figure out how many points you are allowed each day, then you keep track of your points and stay under that number. You can also 'earn' extra points through exercise.
It turns out that staying under the allotted number of points isn't hard if you eat mainly fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy, and exercise every day. Go figure. However if you want to spend your entire day's points on a hunk of chocolate cake and then sit around all day, you can.
The other program consists of a list of certain foods that are bulky but low in calories. You eat as many of them as you want, but stop when you are full. You restrict yourself to the foods on that list and no others. Again, we're looking at mostly veggies and lean meats here.
I picked the count-your-way along points program because I don't trust myself to just sit down at a vat of celery sticks and eat all I want of them. Who knows what could happen? It's too scary. So I counted points. I had more food than I needed most days and I still lost three pounds. I can't complain about that.
That's not bad for one week.
I didn't have any cravings for bad foods, mostly because there are so many good foods you can eat a lot of without picking up any calories. It's summer, so all the fresh veggies and fruits are in season and are available everywhere at good cheap prices. I also discovered frozen giant fudge pops made by Weight Watchers that are only one point and are actually really good. When I got to wanting a sweet, I grabbed one of those.
Choosing a Goal Image
The meetings are, well, they're not really 'me' but I since there is technically too much of me I'm making myself attend them anyway. Statistics show that people who attend the meetings tend to lose more weight and keep it off longer than people who skip the meetings. If you've ever been to a Tupperware party or a motivational seminar, take those two, squish them together, throw in recipes, and you've got a pretty good idea of what a Weight Watchers meeting is like.
One thing WW is really big on is getting a visual image of yourself at your ideal weight and keeping that around and thinking about it everyday to keep yourself motivated. For instance, you could have a certain dress or bathing suit in mind, and vow to be able to wear that by a certain (reasonable) date.
I know what I want to look like, and what I weighed when I looked like that, so I decided to find a photo of myself at that weight and keep that around. I also want to be at my goal by Christmas, roughly, and wear something killer to Bill's company Christmas party this year. It will have to include heels, which I can't walk in without falling on my face, so we'll have to park close in order for me not to make an ass of myself. I'm thinking of something with a pencil skirt and a bit of cleavage. That's my goal: A killer Christmas dress.
I already own a pair of killer red heels, so I just need the dress.
The first Christmas party Bill took me to three years ago was great for my ego because everyone there thought I was in my 30s or early 40s. Since then, I've let my hair go grey so I look my age, but it would be nice to be able to dress provocatively again if I want to. Not that I ever want to, but it's nice to have that option. The truth is, I'd live in my PJs if I could. I'm a total nerd. Now I'm a chubby total nerd. But after my first week, I'm a less chubby total nerd.
Speaking of total nerds, on July 25th A NEW X-FILES MOVIE is coming out with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. That's next Friday, so for this coming week, my goal is to be at least 3 pounds lighter by the time I go to that movie, at which point I will reward myself with a diet coke and a small popcorn (no butter). I can do it. I know I can.
So where are my 'before' photos?
I did promise to post one, and I still will, but I have to have Bill take a few of me. I couldn't find any more recent than the one on my profile (which was from this past winter), so I have to have one snapped. I'm not chickening out, honest. If I can scan one from when I was 30-ish I'll include that too, since that's the weight I want to be.
But it will have to wait until next week...
Stay tuned though! Next week! Me fat! Me thin! Photos!
Seriously.

Hi Veronica, thanks! Hey, what's a "Paula Deen Diet"?
(Sorry to be dumb!)
YOU GO GIRL!! That is an excellent amount to lose in a week!
I tried a lot of different diets in the past, and they never worked. I only gained instead of lost. My doctor put me on a weight loss pill and a pill to reduce sugar cravings last month. I just found out I am diabetic, Type II. I have lost 14 pounds in five weeks now, I am feeling great!
Good Luck, and keep us posted! :)
Way to go Michelle! Fourteen pounds in five weeks is awesome. I'm going to shoot for an extra 15 minutes of exercise this week each day and see if that gives me a boost. Good for you! Thanks for sharing your progress!
Hey pgrundy, I can see your strategy here. You look at that picture of cheesy greasy deep fried donuts and it puts you off eating fried food for a week. After looking at that you actually PREFER a nice salad. Good thinking. Keep it up.
Isn't that just the nastiest load of 'food' you ever saw? It was actually served at a staff party at Google headquarters. I found it online. Ack!
Yay! WTG, pgrundy, keep up the great work! I love Weight Watcher's, I like the feeling of support/community and the fact that they emphasize healthy eating habits, instead of fad dieting.
Hi Nicole! Thanks! Yes, it's one of the saner 'diets' out there. It's basically just learning good nutrition, portion control, and healthy exercise habits with, as you say, friendly support. I'm feeling optimistic now. A good week for me for sure.
OMG, you guys have not LIVED until you have a Krispy Kream cheeseburger. Don't hate! lol
Nice job on the weight Pgrundy, that is an awesome amount to shed in a week. Oh, and someone I know did the "eat all you want list" thing instead of points and was munching on bags of carrots constantly to the point her skin was turning kind of orange. I'm not kidding. Pretty hilarious. Good job and good luck.
Thanks Shadesbreath! I looked at that list of all-you-can eat foods and I thought, God, I'll starve on this because I don't want any of it. At least on the count every forkful plan you get a shot a real food, just not so much of it. And if I run or something, I get another forkful. Actually it wasn't that hard.
I promise to serve the Krispy Kreme Cheesburgers at my celebration party when I'm skinny. They need gravy though. I guess I could serve gravy on the side.
Congratulations!!!!!!
I'm a fellow WW-er but I do it online so please feel free to msg me if you have any questions. I had lost all my weight and became a lifetime member and everything but college started and I gained it all back because I didn't stick to it! I really wish you the best and what a great start!
Gravy is a beverage anyway. Sheesh. I need to give you lessons on gluttony. Oh... hah, there's a hub idea. ROFL. Off I go.
Pam--so proud of you! 3 pounds is great! Just think, if you can do that for the next 3 weeks you could be down anywhere from 8 to 12 lbs for the month!! That would be awsome!!
I'm right there with you--I'm down 3 for this week too. Get that forum up for the tips and hints for all us chubbos sitting in front of our computers all day! Though--I'm not as brave as you--I won't post any pictures. Just can't make myself do it!
Good luck for the coming week. Looking forward to the next post!
Congrats on your success, Pam. I know you can do it. Here's wishing you every success in achieving a healthier you - a you that you're happier with. You'll knock 'em dead at the Christmas party.
Congratulations, Pam!!! Its a great start! You are also motivating me, which is part of being a good writer, which you are.
Thanks you guys! I'll get Bill to take some photos this week. Hopefully one will unscary enough to post.
I forgot gravy is a beverage, but I'm glad Shadesbreath will be writing a gluttony hub. I expect it will be hilarious.
if you reach a plateau when you're not losing, exercise is the trick....you are right on! when I wanted to lose 20 lbs, for every pound I lost, I put a raw potato that weighed about 1 lb in a sack, soon, I had a visual for all the weight...It has "stuck" with me for years!! Potatoes are nice and lumpy and sure indicate what we were carrying around!!
of course, i'm always fighting the urge to eat the potatoes. -- just equate eating with walking...and you've got another incentive.
Don't you just love/hate all this advice??? you're doing fine...=)
Hey, you're doing great with 3 lbs. off in a week. Look forward to seeing those Christmas party pics.
Hi marisue and Marketing Guide, thanks for the encouragement!
Mariesue, baked potatoes actually are not that bad as long as you leave off the butter and sour cream. I put salsa on them, very tasty!
Wow you guys are amazing. I have never been very successful at a diet plan. Everytime I *try* to go on a diet, I can't stop thinking about the food that I am not eating. And then I get really discouraged when I weigh myself for the umteenth time in a day and there is no weight loss. Sometimes I resort to not drinking so that I would weigh less >< I know very silly. Finally, I found a great way to lose weight - replace my food addiction with another greater addiction. Any of you done any online gaming? It worked great for me :-)
Three pounds is a great "only". Quick loses mean quick regains. Losing weight doesn't mean the losing fat cells. Go slow and create new eating habits. Go fast and you don't change a thing.
Three pounds a week! I'm surprised. I have heard that losing weight fast has many negative sides but it seems you are quiet fine. Congrats!

Wow!~ Congratulations! I could handle a diet like that. It would be like a "Paula Deen Diet" WOOT!
