I Love My Lumix DMC-TZ5
68Initial Research
About a month ago I decided to buy a small digital camera for taking pictures while on travel. Carrying my large Nikon D70s has become too much of a burden.
I got a recommendation for a Lumix from a friend and decide to take a look. I found one at Costco but fortunately did not buy immediately. After doing about a week's worth of research, I decided on the DMC-TZ5.

DMC-TZ5
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 camera has a Leica 28mm wide angle lens with 10x zoom. That means you get 28mm - 280 mm in a little point and shoot camera. It's got a number of other cool features you can read about on the Amazon link, including Intelligent Exposure.
So far, the pictures I've taken are above satisfactory to outstanding. I needed to read the manual to get the hang of taking macro shots, and I'm really happy with the results.
Not only does this camera take great shots, but it also takes amazing video! I'm still playing with the settings, but I can zoom while I'm shooting and the results are seamless. My cats know I'm up to something here.
Taking Pictures and Video
I chose a sampling of a few of the first photos I've taken with this camera. None of these photos have been touched up by Photoshop or any other photo manipulation software. This is amazing to me, because most of my photos taken with my D70s require auto leveling at least. Not always, but often.
I put them into a slide show. Some are macros of flowers in my garden, a couple of pictures of my darling cats (one 18 years old, the other 2 - I'm sure you'll be able to tell which is which), a "self-portrait," a sunset and a couple of other pictures.
I can't wait to take this camera to Nepal and Bangkok soon! It will be fun having a camera I can slip into a waist pack and it will be fun to have a camera I can take videos with. I was able to take videos with my old Nikon Coolpix 450, but was limited to a couple of minutes. On this camera I'm limited to the size of my card and the resolution I choose.

Purchase & Price
Initially, after deciding that this was the camera I wanted to purchase, I looked for the lowest price. I found it on Broadway Photo.
Some of you reading this may already be ready to comment! Wait, before you do. I got an email from Broadway Photo saying they couldn't process my order until I called them (thankfully).
First, they told me that the battery coming with my new camera only lasted 20 minutes and I should buy the correct battery for $129.00 (I kid you not). When I said, "is this the Panasonic CGA-S007A lithium battery?" he said "yes." I said it was available on Amazon for $39.95. Then he said, "By the way, this is the Japanese model, if you want the American model with the correct cables it will cost more (he gave me a price more than what I would pay on Amazon)."
I said "Please cancel my order." To their credit, he cancelled my order immediately, no more questions asked.
I purchased it on Amazon and it arrived about 3 days later. It came with the afore mentioned lithium battery and charger. All through Amazon, I purchase an additional rechargeable battery and a Sandisk SDSDRX38192 Extreme III SDHC 8GB Card with MicroMate Reader. The battery came the same day and the card came a couple of days later (it came from Beach Camera).

Thanks very much for your suggestion about tags. I've been reading some of your hubs and I'm seriously considering doing the 30 day challenge (www.thirtydaychallenge.com). I've got a full plate, but if I can even pick up a few new ideas, I will benefit.
And I'm still LOVING this camera!! I'll have more videos of my cats than I'll know what to do with soon.
I simply couldn't believe about the age of one of your cats - 18 yo!!!
30DC is going to help you a lot in building your online community to leverage your good work 1xxx folds. What is almost impossible on an individual basis, it is sometimes just a 'little play' for a skilled group of friends, who really care about each other's work. What is maybe important about the group is that the members are somehow unified by their basic technical skills. And that's the purpose of 30DC. Loads of fun, technical skills, group work, and group encouragement. Friendships which last for life, too.
I've always wanted a really good digital SLR as it is your big boy Nikon. Could you please describe the difference between those two as you have noticed it - your personal feeling.
p.s.
I especially like your hubs, because they are so personally written and personally experienced.
Hi Solarshingles, about the D70s. I think you'd have to buy it used now. I like the camera alot and I have carried it to various locations around the world since buying it.
To help trim the weight some, last year I purchased a $400 (?) Tamron AF18-250mm lens so that I could take macro to zoom. In Sri Lanka I got some decent bird pictures, but with a zoom you really need a tripod. This particular lens doesn't have VR.
At the time I really wanted the Nikkor 18-200mm lens but it was sold out everywhere. Of course now there are even better lenses on the market.
I've also recently purchased the Nikon MC-DC1 Remote Cord for Nikon D70S & D80 Digital SLR Cameras from Amazon (came from Adorama) for about $20 plus shipping. I wanted this because when I was in Kauai in February the stars at night were amazing. Being in the city, I don't see stars like this. But I couldn't take a timed shot for more than 30 seconds!
So, now I'll need to arrange a nightime drive out to the mountains near my home in Seattle and take some cool starry night pictures!
Because I'm always looking to upgrade my gear, and taking pictures when I'm traveling is my main reason for having a digital camera, I thought about purchasing a new and better lens.
Then I looked at reviews of the small point and shoots and the Lumix really caught my eye. Once I really got into checking out the Lumix, I decided on this DMC-TZ5 because of its wide angle to 10x zoom capability. Never mind the rest of the cool features.
Now that I have it, I love it because of the great pictures it takes, including the true color. I don't think I've ever had a camera (including my Nikon) that takes pictures this true, except maybe my old Pentax K-1000, but there it depended on the film I purchased.
If I was going to buy a digital SLR now, and if I had the money, I would go with the Nikon D-300. Yum. If this was 2 years ago and I was just purchasing my first digital SLR, I'd probably be going with the D-80. It's a little more compact than my D70s and it's got a higher megapixel count.
Speaking of megapixels, though, even though my D70s is only 6.1 megapixels, I did a test where I had 4 photos (2 each) professionally printed at 8x10 and at 12x18 to compare shooting at fine vs. normal. The results were an eye-opener. I could not see any difference in quality, both of the 12x18 prints are sharp and clear with no pixelation.
I hope this helps to answer your question! ~Cheryl
P.S. I just finished watching the first pre-season 30 Day Challenge video. I think this is going to be fun.

Lavenderstreak, thank you for this very honest hub about Panasonic TZ5. I can fully trust you about your description, because I've got a TZ3 at home and I am quite happy with it. TZ5 is obviously the latest, even better model. We really need to be so careful when purchasing new technical gadgets, because many merchants are just seeking for the opportunity to con us to pay too much. I enjoyed your photo album and both of your blogs are very professionally crafted, as well.
