How to start bodybuilding and get in good shape?

Updated on December 27, 2011

I am 30 and would like to start to train seriously and build some muscles, need some advice on exercises, supplements, and dieting for my beer gut.

Hey, I remember when I was first learning what it was like learning how to lift. First things first is determining what you do know. If you have ever worked out before, or even just know how to perform some exercises, then you've got a good start. If you don't know any, then I have some sites that will show you how to do them if you need it. The most important thing when you start is no matter what you do, keep a log of it. Write down what you eat, drink, when you run, lift, everything.

The most important thing with diet is eat enough protein, most people don't get enough protein at all, and cut out the sugars, starches. I like low-carbohydrate diets, but for a long term approach, if you cut the sugar, bread, cola, etc, that's way more than 90% of people do. As far as training, if you do large compound movements and keep changing your sets and reps, it doesn't have to get fancy because as long as you squat, deadlift, pull up, bench press, overhead press, and do some kind of Olympic lifting, your entire body will get a workout. Don't waste time doing 20 sets of curls and triceps kickbacks and no legs, it is just like walking up an escalator going down, a complete waste of time.

When it comes to supplements, they're just that, the only supplement I recommend to a complete beginner is a good protein powder, but everything else is for fine tuning, and right now you're just at the gotta get started stage. Don't overanalyze it, analysis paralysis is the number 2 killer of all workouts, behind laziness. Just get in the gym, move more weight every time you go, either by lifting heavier or doing more reps, and cut out the crap foods, eat fruit and veggies for carbs, lots of meat, and sleep.

It's not that hard. If you need anymore help, just let me know.

You can also probably get some good advice on lifting from some good books too."The Body Sculpting Bible for Men" (See Below) and "Weight Training Workouts that Work" (Read Below) and "Strength Training Anatomy". Take some photos of your every week and check the progress, will help you to remain motivated.
