I am interested in where and how you chose your children's names and why?

In my husband's family (the Hawaiian side), they come up with scriptural names which are dependent upon what the child's sex is and the day of birth (ie. males are named from Prov 21 and females from Prov 31). They'll create 3 names and then the birth parents get to choose one.

On my side (Palauan) my father gives me names from our ancestors dependent upon the ancestor's character. Culturally, we are taught that you should name your child after someone who is upright so your child will follow along that path. The name given for Palauans also identifies what family lineage the child comes from.

We also give them an American name after a loved family member or else we'll create one from people we love.

Wow how cool...It is a wonderful proverb style..I like that...Also from our ancestor's is a very nice way too. In my family we have to at least have one saints name included..not "have to" but is well approved if we do. Thank You for such an interesting reply..G-Ma :o) hugs
