I could be a crazy cat lady
74
There's no question: I love cats. So does that mean I could be a crazy cat lady?
I always wonder how crazy cat ladies got their start. Did they realize that men weren't good enough for them? Did a husband die? Were they not able to turn away cats that showed up at their doors?
I could see my start even happening today. I want another cat because I don't want my current kitty to be lonely if I leave for a weekend trip; having someone drop in to feed her once a day isn't enough. I would love to have a number of different cats to snuggle with at night... though I wouldn't mind having a crazy cat man around either.
I almost feel like no one likes cats as much as I do. In fact, most people I know either hate cats or are allergic (or both). I can't imagine how people couldn't like cats. I certainly don't have anything against dogs; I'm thinking about taking on a puppy, although now probably isn't the best time (I don't like the idea of a dog having to live in an apartment).
There are just so many reasons to love cats that I almost consider those who don't, well, heartless. I don't love all cats; some can be pretty psycho, claw-happy, or simply isolating. However, a number of cats are just as loving and loyal as dogs, as well as happy to receive a good rub on the tummy. I have found that getting cats from animal shelters mean getting a cat more suited to your personality. I love needy kitties who sleep on top of me at night and who talk to me a lot, and my kitty found me at the shelter by running up to me and laying peacefully on my shoulder.

Why do I love cats? (Mine, at least)
- They have so many different personalities that I love to get to know. They can be needy or independent, talkative or pensive,
- They are clean; you usually don't have to give them baths, and the most cleaning I do is their litter box, which is a piece of cake compared to having poo in the carpet, and using a pet-hair roller to pick up any extra hairs. Pottytraining is a one-time thing, in their youth. I don't have to worry about stepping in anything on the lawn, too; I'm free to walk barefoot with peace of mind.
- They are relatively quiet, only meowing when they greet you or when they want something. They won't wake you up or bother you by barking at random things.
- They're easy to carry and transport. (Well, if they don't have claws...)
- They can help protect your home too! My cat always finds the mosquitoes and other pests in the house.
- They're fun to play with. My cat's favorite toys include a belt, Post-It Notes (crumpled-up), hair ties, and my hamster (she doesn't have claws, and she's so non-threatening, so they play with each other). Just don't give them ribbon they can ingest!
- They don't cause that many problems... most of the time. I don't have to worry about my kitty getting into any trouble. More apartments will accept cats than other furry creatures, too.
- They're great entertainment. I can watch my cat play with her favorite toys for too long.
- They are adorable. Nothing like a little kitten to make your heart melt. How can you deny a fluffy kitty?
Not everyone loves cats, and cats aren't for everyone. But not all cats are the same, and there just might be a kitty out there for everyone.

I'm allergic, too. But I wouldn't give up my cat, for anything. There are worse things to be, than a crazy cat person! If you're going to be crazy, you may as well have some friends along for the ride!
I love cats too. I am not allergic to them though. There is a substance that you put on your cat with a towl or washcloth that helps comtrol the dander in which you are allergic too--not the cat itself--just the dander. Okay I went out to get the bottle so that I could tell you exactly what it is. It is called "Allergy Relief from Pets" and it is made by Simple Solutions and you can get it almost anywhere. What is says on the bottle is that it washes away eliments that cause some people to have allergic reactions around pets. It also says that it is gentle and alcohol free and has moisturizers. The bottle is white and the label is Pink, Teal with Yellow writing.
I also have a hub about my cats and animals called The Chosen Ones. Come by and read that too.
Hello glassvisage, you should contact Bard of Ely. He's a crazy cat man. He has two cats and they rule his life but you can see how much he loves them. Me: I walk my sister's dog every day, and that's enough for me!
cats? my whole family's allergic to them except for me... My sister hates them so much. Can't have one as a pet...
I, being an animal lover myself consider them as adorable as much as they are mysterious... I love how they walk and purr and slither between your legs when they like you... :) I don't really understand why most people I know hate them....
If I would be turned into an animal, I'd choose to be a cat any other day... They're just so graceful and sexy and neat...
I have always loved cats! My husband, on the other hand, is in the category of those who do not care for the animals (and no, he is not allergic). I am angling to get a new one (cat, not husband) in September when we get back from a planned trip. Loved your Hub. :-) Steph
Thanks Lady Guinevere for that product recommendation!
It's nice to see the gathering of kitty-lovers here :) Good luck with getting a new cat, stephhicks68... I'm working on that myself!
Go to the Humane Societies and The other places tht rescue cats and kittens., I am on a mission to help Spay/Neuter all the ones that come to my part of the woods here! Three are soooo many that get pyt to sleep becasue of unwanted litters. Join Allie Cat Allies and try to help all those around you out too. You can donate or be a sponsor for Spay Today. I am sure there is one in your area and if there isn't try to get one started. Some places the fees are not FREE. Ours isn't. When yu take a cat to get spayed/neutered there are alway other fees on top of that. It is mandatory in this state tht you have to get rabies shots. If you outright take the cat to the Vets, like I did once. The cots are very high! Cat's are precious and they are meant to be loved and cared for.
It's true - they do! I came here to start a new life now that my son had grown up but cats came into my life very quickly and now I won't stay out all night and won't travel because I don't want to upset them and I haven't anyone to look after them while I am away. I have turned down festival gigs in the UK saying I can't come over because I have no one to see to my cats!
Neither of the cats I have are easy - Tiggy is greedy and too fat but if I try to ignore her when she is begging for more she will nip me in the leg, which I can't ignore and Old Lad who was a stray is terrified of flies of any type and he has a tendency to ruin the furniture with his claws.
Both expect to sleep by me and Tiggy also expects me to smooth her tummy a lot of the time - she is very demanding and bossy!
I may do a hub at some point on cats so watch this space!
Bard of Ely, I am so with you there!
When we leave to go somwhere I have my neighbor come and play and feed and clean out the litter boxes. One time I had a neighbor who moved do this for us and when I came home my sheets on my bed were shredded. I mean shredded. She couldn't see it becasue I pulled down the comforter and she never even noticed! I have a cat who is afraid of just about everything. When she goes outside it takes me 4 days to gt her back in because she is afraid of the boy cat inside, but at the same time she is afraid of the male cat that follows her around. She is fixed so sh has nothing to worry about. I just can't sleep well until I now that all my cats (kids) are inside for the night. I also have a pisser! I dont' know exactly which one it is but it comes down to two of the five. I have used the enzyme cleaners but she will go right back there and piss some more. I am about to just pull up the carpet and paint the floor with Killz and not have carpet for a few months. Aggravates the heck out of me!
I don't have a cat or ever owned one, but my sister had a cat that was like a puppy. He would run to the door when she would come home from work and was quite affectionate for being a cat.
Dispelling the myth of affectionate cats---Yes there are many cats who are VERY affectionate and loving. They are more like Dogs then anyone realizes and then they are more like people too. They all have a different personality and as my Sister in law is concerned about --Yes they have Fleas--same as Dogs and they also have Flea treatments --same as dogs. She didn't want cats because she thought that they bring in fleas-but she has three dogs. I don't understand why people don't like cats either. My husband is not a cat person, but when I see him out with the cats and they come and want love and petting--his face says something totally different.
So true. My cat will even lick my face, and they always roll around on the floor and ask for their tummy rub. And fleas? My cats have never had fleas; all you do is give them their treatment like dogs and they're fine.
I never had a cat when I was a girl. Until recently ( 2 months ago) my friends' cat had babies, and were suppose to be very friendly and lazy cats. So, I dumbly got one not thinking about all the pigeons. Well, so far so good. Hasn't scratched a pigeon and is really affectionate! Great hub !
Estelle~
Seriously, I am a big cat person too. It's weird, either you're a cat person or a dog person. My two cats are like my children, and a lot of people don't understand that. They just have soo much personality, and are quite mischievious- I love 'em :-)
Boy, am I glad to see all the cat lover here--I was beginning to think I was almost the only one.
Thanks for the tip about the cat dander stuff for allergies. My nephew is dating a girl with a cat and he is has really bad reactions to it. This just may help a budding romance!!
I have only one cat right now--a Siamese Munchkin--but we've been thinking of getting another one too. Two times the fun, right?!
Thumbs up, joined your fan club and linked to my cat Hubs! Good Job!!
I am currently working on another cat hub explaining AIDS differences between stray and ferals and spaying and neutering. I will let you know when I finish it. I am looking for the video that I had on my computer and putting all the information together on it. Oh and The Chosen Ones--there are additions after the advertisement after the first comment section in case some of you came and just responded to the first one. I have to figure this thing out with additions and such. Give me some time!
Sounds good Lady Guinevere... I love The Chosen Ones!
I love cats! I'm missing mine of 14 years. Lost her a year and a half ago to kidney failure. Now my pet is my toddler! :O
I'm more of a dog person. Don't hate me. I like your sense of humor.
You are WAY too cute to be crazy! ;)
14 years? Wow! All the more time for love :)
But just so long as you don't hate cats... you're welcome here, even if you're more of a dog person :)
And thanks :D
There are lots of crazy cat ladies (and gents) around and I'm definitely one of them. My neighbour is too which is handy for both of us. At Christmas her card was signed from 'me and my gang to you and your small gang'.
I like every single cat even the mean ones and the ugly ones
I believe that they are in my life to help me become a better person and they certainly bring great joy and contentment into my life. Also great heartache when they die.
"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives more temporary than our own,
Live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps.
We still would have it no other way"
That is a beautiful quote, Gilly. Nearly brought tears to my eyes :)

Guilty as charged: I'm allergic. My mother's old kitty, Sam, runs up to me whenever I visit, wraps himself about my ankles, jumps in my lap as soon as I sit down, and I swear he laughs every time I sneeze. Gotta love that cat and gotta hate my *&!# ineffectual allergy pills.
And the world needs more gushy love pictures, with any species.
