Gaining Exposure as a Professional Speaker

The best manner in turning passion into profit as a public speaker is to find a niche that you are knowledgeable in. If, for ex., you are gifted in three particular areas on a certain subject or expertise, then determine if they are interrelated. If so, you can incorporate various seminars, courses, and speeches on the topics of related interest. If they are not, then narrow it down to the one area that you are most passionate about. Once you have done that, determine your market. What audiences would most be interested and most benefit by this information? After establishing your market, then begin to network to the organizations, leaders, and interest groups that are in these markets and offer your services. If you have not given speeches previously, you may want to offer a complimentary course on a subject with the understanding that you will have your personal CDs, books, etc, or other products available for purchase. You can also work in advance with the moderator and determine if a offeratory or donation can be given on your behalf for your time, travel, or effort. As you grow in exposure, then your fee can be established. Likewise, you can seek to network with each new opportunity for future classes and presentations.

The key is to find an area of information that is of interest to your audience, that they cannot obtain through another offered seminar in your area, or is comparable to attend cost wise.

Lastly, start with your local church or non-profit organizations as many will allow outside specialists to come in to offer presenatations with the agreement of a freewill donation, allowance for personal product promotion, or networking.

Do you have any degrees in public speaking? A word of advice; you better have a second career to fall back on. I gave two paid speeches in the last two years; I speak to high schools and they just don't have it in there budgets. My first year out of college was the best, I gave ten speeches over the school year and that was in '01.
