Question:

If a person has been certified by the PMI (Project Management Institute) but has never been on an IT project team, would you consider hiring that person to manage an IT project?

Answer:

Yes, I would hire a person that has been certified by the Project Management Institute although he is only a novice and has not been able to work with a project team yet.

The Project Management Institute is one of the leading organizations that offer the best professionals in the project management industry. All throughout, it has been trusted to operate within reliable project management standards, and, it has expanded their group competence by administering credentials to qualified professionals in an utter progressive process ("Product Management Institute," 2007, para.1). How does PMI do this?

First, the PMI follows the sole ANSI standard for project managers - the PMBOK Guide (or "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge"). And second, PMI grants certification to their candidates according to levels of aptitude. First level is the CAPM (or Certified Associate in Project Management) and second, and more advanced level, is the PMP (or Project Management Professional) ("Product Management Institute," 2007, para.1).

PMP certificate holders are internationally competent advanced workers in over 175 countries ("Product Management Institute," 2007, para.2). And as with CAPM's, there are well aboutover 220,010 members (ibid), and exceptional applicants remain counting to be recognized for their potentials.

The reason for going for a PMI certificate? - Holders are hired. Although just undergrads or graduate students ambitious for a project management profession, and without any previous project team participation, CAPM holders are technically qualified for having passed the PMI's formal education requirements as well as a comprehensive aptitude examination ("Certification: Certified Associate in Project Management," 2005, para.5). Additionally, all candidates for a PMI certification are already called for their adherence to a code of professional conduct ("Examination Info: PMP® and CAPM®," 2005, para.1). Yet, perhaps the most consistent measure of the CAPM's - is its all-inclusive examination. This assesses the candidates' competence on the profession, by testing them on the language and context involved in everything about project management (ibid).
