Warne upset at Ganguly's refusal to walk
May 1, 2008
The Indian Premier League feels increasingly like the Shane Warne Show. Tonight, after his Rajasthan Royals side made it four wins in a row in front of a partisan crowd at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur, Warne launched into a stinging attack on Sourav Ganguly, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, for what he perceived to be a blatant disregard for the spirit of the game. He seemed to have a point, but right now Warne could probably tell you the earth was flat and you'd believe him.
Warne was already irritated by the time Ganguly refused to walk for a catch claimed at deep midwicket by Graeme Smith. Ganguly famously made Steve Waugh wait at the toss, and now Warne believed the former India captain was running on Sourav-time yet again. "Our batters were waiting five minutes for the home side to go out," said Warne. "And when we came out in the field, we were waiting for Sourav. He was just going on his own time."
Then came the catch, or non-catch, depending on your interpretation of the TV pictures. Smith was convinced he had taken Ganguly's swing cleanly, and so, plainly, was Warne. But Ganguly asked for a replay - which he is not supposed to do - and Asad Rauf up in the TV box could not be 100% certain the ball had not bounced. Ganguly fell in the next over anyway, but Warne was furious.
"I was disappointed because in Bangalore we signed that wall about the spirit of cricket," he said. "If an international captain like Graeme Smith caught it and said it was a clean catch and Rudi Koertzen said he caught it, easy... And anyway, the players aren't allowed to ask for the umpire. But Sourav asked the Indian umpire to go to the TV replay. That's not in the spirit of the game so I was very, very disappointed with Sourav."
Warne's young charges are learning more than they can have dreamed from him as this tournament progresses, so it will be interesting to see if they adopt his aversion to Ganguly by the time these sides next meet, on May 20 at Eden Gardens.
As Warne pointed out, to score 196 for 7 when the in-form overseas pair of Graeme Smith and Shane Watson have contributed two runs between them suggests an unusually close-knit side. Rajasthan sprang a surprise - at least that's how Warne presented it - by picking the unknown 24-year-old opener Swapnil Asnodkar, who promptly added to the Midas Touch theory by whacking a 34-ball 60 which belied his tiny frame.
There were runs too for Yusuf Pathan, whose stature grows by the game, and two wickets in an over for Siddharth Trivedi, who was singled out for special praise by Warne. Actually, he singled out pretty well everyone for special praise, including Ravindra Jadeja (33 off 19 balls and a "future superstar") but then that's what he does so well.
"We try to get the best out of every individual in our squad," he explained. "I'm trying to teach 20 years of knowledge, about summing up the situation, finding a way to score, how to construct an over, be positive, stand up tall, and back yourself. And so far it's working. It's the benefit of my experience and to their credit they're learning very, very fast. We show spirit every game. Everyone's in it together. Never underestimate the spirit of a team."
There was a symbolic moment right at the end of the game. Kolkata's No.11 Ashok Dinda lifted Watson in the gap between mid-off and extra cover, and both Warne and the substitute fielder Taruwar Kohli, converged on the ball as it hung temptingly in the air. In the event, Kohli hung on, but Warne fell to the ground with him, as if helping him complete the catch right down to the last detail.
"Sometimes international players think they know it all," said Warne, implicitly advocating the exuberance of youth. You sense his players will do anything for him. And if they win against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, they will present him with a league table which, against all the odds, will show Rajasthan Royals on top of the IPL.

Adam Gilchrist set the DY Patil Stadium alight with the fastest century of the tournament as the Deccan Chargers raced to their first win of the tournament. The battle between the two bottom-ranked teams was a no-contest once Gilchrist teed off, as the short boundaries and Mumbai Indians' bowlers were made a mockery of.

Harbhajan slaps Sreesanth
New Delhi: Harbhajan Singh today found himself in yet another controversy after allegedly slapping Kings XI paceman S Sreesanth during their Indian Premier League encounter here today.
The Kings XI team, led by Yuvraj Singh, is reportedly planning to lodge a complaint against the off-spinner, who later apologised to the paceman in the dressing room of the Punjab team.
BCCI Vice president Rajiv Shukla said the Board would wait for the report from the team management before deciding on the future course of action.
Harbhajan, leading Mumbai Indians side, allegedly slapped Sreesanth when the latter said something to him which the off-spinner found offensive.
The paceman was seen crying bitterly on the ground at the end of the IPL match, which his team won by 66 runs.
While Harbhajan kept mum on the issue during the post match conference, Sreesanth tried to play down the incident.
"It is normal. Nothing serious happened. It is all in the game. I am fine. We will still be part of the national team," Sreesanth said before leaving the stadium.
As Sreesanth came to board the bus to return to the team hotel, the media mobbed him to listen to his version.
Harbhajan did not speak on the issue.
"Can we have questions on just cricket," Harbhajan said when asked about what happened between him and Sreesanth.
Mumbai Indians coach Lalchand Rajput also requested the media to restrict their questions to just cricket.
The winning captain Yuvraj Singh was upset by the unsavory incident and termed it "ugly."
"This is really an ugly incident. You do not want to see such things off the field especially after a win. I am upset at what happened. This is totally unacceptable," he said apparently criticising Harbhajan Singh.
Yuvraj said he did not know what actually transpired between the two. "I do not know what exactly happened but one does not want to see such things happening."
Kings XI coach Tom Moody was also upset by the incident and termed as "unacceptable" Harbhajan's behaviour.
"At the end of the day, players shake hands. But today saw more that from Harbhajan and Sreesanth. It is unacceptable behaviour and I am sure officials will take note."
"The positive thing is that Harbhajan had a long chat with Sreesanth. But I am not sure what ramifications this incident will have," Moody said.
Upset after his team's third successive defeat, the turbanator also looked unhappy with his teammates.
"When you lose nothing seems to be okay. I won't bowl and bat for other people. They have to be captain of their own bowling and own bowling. I cannot do another's job," he said angrily when asked if captaincy was tough."I don't like losing. When you lose, you don't feel happy."

April 22, 2008
Delhi Daredevils 143 for 1 (Sehwag 94*) beat Deccan Chargers 142 for 8 (Rohit 66, Asif 2-19) by nine wickets
A clinical performance from the Delhi Daredevils, beginning with some miserly bowling and capped by Virender Sehwag's blistering 41-ball 94, produced an early finish in Hyderabad, the Deccan Chargers losing by nine wickets with seven overs to spare.
For the second game running, the bowlers and the top order did the job for Delhi; Sehwag had fallen after a cameo against the Rajasthan Royals but he took full toll of the Deccan bowlers, smashing 30 off one Andrew Symonds over to help his team to another resounding win.
The presence of Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds and Shahid Afridi in one team might scare off any bowling attack but Glenn McGrath and Mohammad Asif were perhaps the ideal pair to challenge them. McGrath started in typical miserly fashion with a maiden, but it was Asif who did the early damage. Adam Gilchrist played on after smashing Asif over the square-leg boundary, and two overs later Laxman only managed a faint inside-edge onto the stumps off an incutter.
At the other end, Venugopal Rao was all at sea against McGrath, managing only two runs off his first eight deliveries against the Australian, before breaking the shackles with a four over long-off. He had a lucky stay at the crease, with mistimed pulls and heaves, till Farveez Maharoof ended his misery, inducing a hit straight down the throat of Shikhar Dhawan on the cover boundary.
McGrath bowled through his four but Andrew Symonds' two consecutive fours in his fourth - pulling one to midwicket and stepping out to make room for one over midwicket - spoilt his figures. Symonds had top scored for his side in the Kolkata nightmare, but Maharoof prevented a repeat, getting him to edge one to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Rohit got going with a first-ball four off Yo Mahesh, and took his chances from the start, hitting two streaky boundaries off Maharoof. There was a brief lull after Shahid Afridi fell leg-before to Rajat Bhatia, but Rohit got the momentum going with a six off Bhatia before going berserk in the 18th over bowled by Maharoof.
Midwicket was targeted the first two deliveries, then Rohit made room to send one screaming through the covers and paddled one to fine leg, before a dead-straight drive, all resulting in boundaries. That over - which read 1,6,6,4,4,4,2 - ensured Deccan reached a respectable score. Rohit reached his fifty off just 31 balls, falling for 66 off 36, and saw a crucial 52 coming off the last three overs.
Delhi's reply began with Sehwag surviving a close leg-before shout against Chaminda Vaas, and he soon began to make Deccan pay, hitting RP Singh for fours through midwicket and to the fine-leg boundary. He was on 13 when given another life, Pragyan Ojha spilling one on the boundary, Vaas the aggrieved bowler yet again.
Gautam Gambhir fell to RP in the next over, but Shikhar Dhawan came up with another unbeaten innings, acting as a perfect foil to Sehwag's pyrotechnics at the other end. Short deliveries were dispatched with disdain by both batsmen before Sehwag cut loose against Sanjay Bangar. Twenty came off four deliveries: a four over backward point was followed by two lobs behind square leg, before he hammered one over midwicket to bring up fifty off just 27 balls. Gilchrist fluffed a stumping down the leg side as Sehwag tried to hit Ojha inside-out; but the blitz that followed would have deflated the already demoralised Deccan players.
At 112 for 1 off 12 overs, Delhi were almost home but their captain was perhaps keen on flying out of Hyderabad quickly. The 13th over, from Symonds , saw Sehwag levelling the scores as he dealt in boundaries, alternating between fours and sixes. A wide from Vaas the next over sealed the win. Deccan would be disappointed with their second consecutive loss but, thoroughly outplayed by the visitors, they can have no complaints.
