5 Reasons Your PC Sucks

I write for a living. As one might guess, this means I'm one of those people who actually needs my computer. Unfortunately, my PC was hellbent on breaking. Several times. Lemme tell you all about it.

See, this was supposed to be a Super Computer. It was comprised of the best parts available at the time it was custom built, which was 3 years ago. Well, guess what? It started screwing up pretty quickly. Every day a new compatibility problem arose. It actually became inaccessible a few times, showing only a blue screen.

The stupid thing had to be taken apart and put back together – several times.

In the summer of ’06, it broke entirely. And I do mean entirely. The sucker deleted everything I had on my primary hard drive, and it killed the two secondary drives. I was very fortunate to have backed my writing up just before this happened, but I did lose tons of photos that I will never be able to get back.

When the computer finally came back, it was as though I’d just bought it. By this, I mean every setting – even my administrative name – was gone. Oh, I tried to restore it. Nothing doing. I was screwed. But, I was still relieved that it was working. I reinstalled all the programs I needed and started over again. Until last week, when it broke again. This time, it actually came on ok, showed the Windows flags, went to the desktop – and then went black. I could click with the mouse, but I couldn’t see anything. Now, I could have had a tech come here, take it apart and set me back up.

Some common PC complaints:

  • Viruses and Spyware: This is the big one. I’m so frigging tired of having to worry about viruses, trojans and other malware. Why is this my problem? It’s not my fault so many people hate Bill Gates and want to do everything they can to mess with his junk. I have better things to do than spend all of my time changing passwords and removing infected files.

  • Added Costs of Anti-Virus Programs: Which, by the way, don’t do jack most of the time. I’ve used Zonelabs, AVG, Norton, Symantec – they all let viruses through. It’s probably a conspiracy. As if these guys aren't super rich enough already!

  • Forced Internet Explorer Usage: I read ebooks with MS Reader most of the time. If you want to install this, you can click on the link via Firefox – but once you are on the MS website, it tells you that you have to use IE to view anything. Not very friendly!

  • You MUST Keep Your Crap Updated: What a chore this is, especially if you’re not naturally techish. I mean, yeah, it’s reasonable to expect me to maintain my computer. But it’s not reasonable to assume I will always get it right when I have no background in computer engineering. And with Windows, you might have to update new patches, etc. every freaking day! I know, I know there’s the auto updater. But in the past I’ve had problems with that as well.

  • You Can’t Properly Get Rid of What You DON’T Want! PC’s come with so much crap you will never use. You can try to remove much of it, but many times this creates errors and bizarre messages, setting you up for problems in the future. Which can screw everything up, and often does.

Not to mention you can't completely remove Internet Explorer - go on, try it! Yeah, I know, some of you have never had problems with your PC and have no idea what I’m on about. I hope you never have to find out, either, cos once your PC turns on you, it’s all downhill from there. Just take my advice – if your PC goes mad, go get you a Mac!

I hate Microsoft, and Dell, and Norton, and viruses, and freaking Vista and everything updated and drivers and bullshit.

This is why earlier this year I ditched all 3 pc's, and bought MACs. And it is true: Once you go MAC you never go back.

I run two MACbooks now, and it eliminated all the things you listed above. No issues. I can't even believe how different the world is with a MAC. I'm so much happier. My only question is, what took me so long.

Isabella great hub, you should have put 1000 reasons for hating it. I bought a new computer less than a year back, I have already made to install three times and lost several files, luckily the backups helped. The next computer is definitely a Mac, I curse Gates everyday because of the crashes. He will be most cursed person on Earth. No mas Windows :)

I'm with you, Isa, and I had vowed to go Mac next time my PC died. But, when it died earlier this year and I looked at the Macs I got such a case of sticker shock I went right back to Dell (hey, at least Mike's a Longhorn).

I paid just over 500 bucks again so I figure $500 every five years is o.k. since I don't have the discipline to save up for a Mac.

1. I write sex for a living. I OWN porn, I don't need to google it. Emails contain viruses, even those without attachments. Ask Bill, he'll tell you all about it.

2. Try again.

3. When you buy an ebook, you get to choose ONE format. What should I do with all the books I already own? Hmm?

4. It interfered with my firewall and created errors constantly.

5. Um, none that I've noticed, so if they are, it's not a problem.

I agree with you on most of these things, but I'm wedded to my pc! Can't go for an attractive mac and quit this love-hate releationship! Sigh.

Mac products are definitely less convient as design and look pass before the ease of use.Typically, my Mighty Mouse which is made out of only one plastic part able to left, right and middle click. Once out of twice, I left click instead of rightclicking, because that stupid device could not determine what click I wanted to perform.Plus, the scroll is so sensible it rolls one step every time I want to open a link in a new tab or close a tab by middleclicking on it.Apple is also anti open source, super propietary oriented and the worst ecologic IT company.Fuck Mac, long live PC!

well... I don't know much about Macs, but I think I will stick with my PC.

I built my first pc about 8 years ago. Then it was pretty much top of the line for a home pc. Now, for most people, it would have been landfill long ago. But guess what? I'm still using that same case. Sure the guts are all different, but its all been upgraded over time, and the old guts I rebuild into trainer pc's for my kids. In my old atx tower I have been through about ten Mobo's, all kinds of vid and audio cards, cd burners, dvd burners, processors, modems, then ethernet, then wireless, hard drives, tape drives, zip drives...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm just as much in love with upgrading to reach that perfect performance level as I am with running my apps and being productive.

I don't think I could ever give up that level of versatility.

OH... 1 more thing. For anyone still using a pc running Microsoft OS who is worried about viruses and spyware, have a look at eset nod32 antivirus. This is 100% set, forget and don't worry technology. It catches everything. And no... I don't own stock in the company.

It's a religion. And I'm not into religious wars :) What I see around makes me thinking that MAC is more suitable for people of artistic mentality - and I am not one of them... I'm actually really surprised Kenny is in PC camp :)

I've been using and modifying PCs since mid 80s, and I know them inside out. I can do with PC whatever I want, and I can make it suit any particular need...

I don't know MACs, and what I read here and in other sources is not enough to overcome my natural lazyness and encourage me to learn them... I'm too old and too lazy for this :)

I'll stick with PC, and I still use Windows and IE. They are just tools, they are not things to hate or love, you know :) BTW, I did install Firefox and Opera, and I use them for very specific tasks IE is not suitable for...
