Chill out man!

Try teaching someone the trick that you're trying to learn.

When you teach someone something you see it from a different perspective and you get better because of it.

"Chill out man. Don't have a cow!" - Bart Simpson

Before you start getting angry or frustrated with a trick that you haven't landed yet, STOP and recognize what’s happening.

“The longer you try a trick and don’t make it the worse it gets”, Marc Johnson says in the Hot Chocolate Skateboard Tour video. And it's true.

The reason it gets worse is because you start hating everything.

It's like when you stub your toe on your bedpost when you wake up and you get a little irritated... the entire day goes on like that, unless you do something to change your mood.

Skateboarding is a lot like that.

When you FEEL like you've already landed that trick [happy and pumped up] it will get you that much closer to landing it. Do whatever you gotta do to get the feeling of landing that trick.

Go through the motions of that trick in your head... and do it in slo-motion. Really SEE in your minds eye you doing the trick and rolling away.

If it's a 50-50 you want then get on that box or rail to get the feeling of that trick. If you want to land a flatland trick flip the board with your hands and really see that trick happening and BELIEVE you can do it and then do it!

Getting angry or upset and giving up isn't going to help you land that trick. If you start getting a little irritated of tired of trying that trick, switch it up!

Try a new trick and do this one tomorrow [or later on if you really want it].

“It’s only lasts until you stop. As soon as you stop then it goes away”…

Don't let it get to you. Sometimes when you push too far you end up hurting yourself. If you're having an "off day" quit while you're ahead. Trust your gut and you won't get hurt as much.

I Just Can't Seem To Land This Trick...

Another little "secret" I use when I’m skating comes from something Albert Einstein once said... He said,“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.

You can only get something different when you're willing to try something different. To get things you never had before you gotta be willing to do things you never done before.

This could work for a number of different things...

Like pushing up to the box to try a trick instead of rolling down the bank to get speed.. or maybe doing a run to build momentum and confidence, and then try that trick [this way works best for me]... it could be anything really.

The point is to just try something different... especially if you’re not getting any results the other way.

Try standing up straight instead of hunched over and just relax. Ride like you were born to ride on a skateboard... and have fun! Tell yourself this trick is easy and you can do it with your hands tied behind your back. Be sure of yourself.

This works for me.

We're all different so something else might work for you, but you can remember these little "secrets" and try them the next time your skating and there's a good chance they'll work for you too.

Right on... Now go outside and use what you've learned!
