Ideas for starting a small home based business
67Home business ideas
With the rising price costs of petrol, groceries, and the normal everyday incidentals spiraling out of control, we need to improve our incomes. I have compiled a list of several ideas on how to start your own home business, listing some of the necessary things you need to check out if you consider starting one of them.
Before doing anything, do a thorough research on your possible competition. Ask yourself what or how you can improve on what they offer their clientele. Draw up a marketing plan, add all the expenses, then allow more to cover the unexpected expense for breakdowns. Never over, capitalize, if you cannot afford it, start slow, and work up.

My suggestions
Baby-Sitting Home Business
This is something most girls or women can do during the day or night and on weekends. Most young girls start baby-sitting in high school for the family and friends. To obtain more work, put a notice in your local shopping centers notice board. You will be surprised at the number of people needing a baby-sitter.
Need to Know
Make sure you have organized safe transport prior to taking on the jobs. Always let someone else know where you are at any given time. Take a mobile phone with you in case of emergencies and for your own security.
House Cleaning Home Business
There are so many working families, where the people would really appreciate coming home to a nice clean home at the end of a hard day. I used to love coming home to a freshly cleaned home with a vase of flowers on the dining room table; somehow, it made the day more bearable. To start this, either place a small advert in your local newspaper or put a notice up in your local shopping center.
You could clean the normal homes, or you could partner up with someone else and contact the local building companies and clean the brand new homes after the builders have finished. This is harder to do than the normal house cleaning jobs.
Need to Know
You need your own transport. Ask the homeowner if they cover you in the case of an accident in their home. If you are working for builders, find out if they have workers compensation. New home cleaning requires you to supply all your own cleaning equipment.

House Cleaning and Babysitting Home Business
You can be the manager or working manager with this one. You find all work and the workers, and then organize the jobs for each person. This is something that you can manage from home, while working a part-time job yourself and earning an extra income from home.
Need to Know
You do all the advertising for both the housecleaning and babysitting clientele. Then you need to run an advert to employ your staff. The clientele pay the workers themselves. You pre-organize the costing for the jobs and your workers pay you a commission for obtaining their work.
The downside to this, is that you will need to have workers compensation in case of accidents or if your worker damages any clients prized possessions. You also need to factor in the cost of advertising, and phone calls into each job before quoting on them.

Lawn Mowing Home based business
These days quite a few couples run this business together, depending on the physical fitness of the couple. Most times the men do the work while the wife runs the office. She takes all the phone calls and sends out the accounts and tends to the banking and organizing the business cards and stationery.
Need to Know
To start you will need a reel mower, rotary mower, whipper-snipper, blower, and a trailer to carry them. These do not come cheap. It could cost you approximately $4000.00 to $5000.00. It will depend on your ability to bargain for the best deal or buy your equipment from a contractor that is retiring.
I strongly suggest that you do not buy a franchise, because you will never really be your own boss. They give you the customers, and the equipment, but you have to pay percentage of each cut to them.
Whereas if you buy your own equipment, and advertise for your own customers, they are yours to do as you please. You can buy an established round, that way you will earn money from the beginning. Like anything, you have to keep the machines in good condition or you will lose customers if lawns not cut correct. You will also need personal insurance or work at your own risk. You could put a disclaimer on your dockets stating, any damage caused from material from the owner's property, then you will not be held responsible.

Xcreen printing home business
Screen Printing Business
This is an interesting type of business. If you have lots of imagination, you can do anything with it. Depending on your interests, you can print t-shirts, hats, banners, stubby holders, sashes, and ribbons. On the other hand, you could go another way by printing signs on car doors and windows.
Need to know
It would help if you have an artistic touch, artwork is necessary. Although with modern technology, you can do anything on the computer. Artwork must be original you cannot copy anyone's artwork. True screen-printing is done on silk screens, with a pattern or film set on it. You then use a rubber scraper to force the paint through the screen onto the object underneath the screen.
You have to organize the purchase of stock from wholesalers, bargaining for the best price. Each job is charged out, so much for the setting up of the screen, then an extra amount for each article printed. If you have a bad print, that spoils the profits.
I have personally done all of the above, with an effort on your part it can work out profitable for you.
Other Ideas
Secretarial Service-Typing of minutes, resumes, reports, assignments, laser printing, newsletters, transcripts.
Creative Invitation cards-Wedding, place, invitation, and thank you cards. In fact, you can make any Party invitation or gift card.
You will need
You need a variety of sample cards, showing different styles and wording layouts, plus assorted stationary with different patterns and colors. You will also need a reliable computer and printer capable of delivering your work.

Thanks rodney
Good advice. Far too many people have no imagination when it comes to alternate ways to make money. These are great suggestions. Anyone facing poor job prospects should study this list and then evaluate their talents to create a better life.
Its amazing what u can do ifyou put your mind to it. I have always liked a chalenge. I dont always succeed but still have to have a go at it. My lack of drawing ability left me in trouble with the screen printing business. I loved doing it but had to pay for the artwork to be done
Thanks for stopping by John.
Excellent hub, Eileen! Very good advice. :)
Thanks amy
Good ideas. It's not easy to start a business, though. It takes up a lot of your attention. ;)
I once considered screen printing, but I was not sure if I have the energy to learn it all. I love the artistic side of it, but I have zero marketing skills. Good advice!
Great Hub! Perfect timing - we were just discussing this in the Warrior Forum. Here, they're implementing 4 day workweeks to save gas. More work at homers?
Hey Eileen,
I received a great suggestion from a fellow networker regarding my current home based business... he said to go out with my books and show them to 10 people per day for 30 days straight. His business more than doubled through this method. I guess it's summer and that means people are out and about...
What motivation! I love how we inspire each other. Thanks so much!
Beats me, the thing about doing it yourself. you can choose your customers and when and how to do things.
Zylla3, It is easy once you have the screens setup. Nowadays it is mostly done on computer. I had to implement everything by hand 30 years ago. Although the computers to do some of those jobs would not be cheap either I suppose.
Eileen,
This hub is very much needed right now.
Nearly 40 years ago I decided to deliver potatoes in 5 Kilo bags to your Home.
The Area you want to deliver to needs to be close to your home, then you walk around all the streets drop in a brochure and two days latter, you knock at the door and ask could you deliver their potatoes?
Yesterday I found we needed potatoes, and we did not have the car, so I walked 1.5 Kilos and bought some. They were heavy, as always. On the way back it started to rain very heavy. I suddenly though back to my potato delivery
I started this business from scratch and before I know I had 400 ladies saying yes. Not long before Val was delivering in one car and I in the other.
This new business went over exceptionally well for over a year. Then Mother Nature took a swipe. Australia had a potato glut. Farmers were digging their potatoes in, as it was cheaper than driving them to the markets.
So the house wife could buy the bag for 20c and I was delivering for 75c.
Economy or intelligence won, so I sold this great home business successfully. I got out in time.
Back to cost petrol. Potatoes are still one of the heaviest units to carry from the Grocers to home. The housewife will not be to willing to get in the car and rush up the road to buy some.
Incidentally I was able to do this apart from my eight hours a day of normal working pursuits,
Thanks for your hub and for allowing me to prattle on.
Forgive me.
'On the way back it started to rain very hard. (Just like it is now) I got soaked and I thought'
Thought of the day
Tiffany dow, yes if you can do it all from home it sure would save you on fuel, but some of the jobs you still have to work at obtaining your clientele and some possible deliveries. Thanks
Storytellerus, That sounds like a great idea especially for people in need of exercise, it would help them to lose weight as well. There are so many ways to earn money if only we put our mind and think of new ideas.
Mr M, There is nothing to forgive. It is people like yourself that help give us hubbers ideas to have a go at. We are all in here working to help others and to earn a little money at the same time.
The main thing is with the potatoe idea, you got off and did it yourself. I will take your idea on board and suggest something similar. Thanks for that. cheers Mr M
Some great ideas here - i hope you inspire people to do something about their circumstances.
PJdscott
Thanks for that. I would love that to happen. Its amazing the different things that we can do from our own home.
Great Hub, Eileen - we need to get back to that self-reliant, entrepreneurial spirit instead of sitting around moaning that the world won't beat a path to our doors. Well done!
Sorry for the double post - computer glitch. I can edit but not delete. If you would be so kind ... thank you in advance.
Mark bennett, thanks for that great comment. Yes we need to get of our butts and help ourselves. Now about the double comment I do not know how to delete so will deny one not sure if that works But heres having a go.. thanks for stopping by thats great
Great report Eileen, I agree with John Chancellor and MrMarmalade, great tips to follow.
These are great ideas and the babysitting one can pay well if you plan it right. However, when my mom first started babysitting our neighbors my dad had promised them a very low hourly rate and all the food the kids could eat. My mom had to renegociate because she needed to charge enough to actually make a profit. Great tips for starting a business.
I did Telemarketing at home.
Not as popular in 2008.The rules have changed.
You do need a hide like a Rhino.
Some people are so cruel.
Could you imagine them slamming the phone down in my sore ear.
Still I did it from home and made some pretty good pocket money. Do this and your spouse can go out and make some real money whilst you are slaving your fingers to the bone. At least you're baby sitting.
That is all you should regard this way of living. Do not ring between 5.00 PM and 7.00 PM
hi,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Thanks Cgull and sweetie pie. You have to be careful, you need to set the rate per hour and not deflect from that or you will never make any money at all and that is why you are doing this as a business not to run at a loss.
Mr Marmalade, You reminded me of when I did the telemarketing. Oh those memories are still vivid now that you reminded me. I did it from home selling solar skylights, with the promise that they would pay my phone a/c if I kept the records and I did.
It was good in the beginning, until another person became involved. And then I got done with an $800.00 phone bill and owed $1000.00 in earnings. I never did it again. It didnt worry me what the people said because they did not know who I was. Thanks for stopping by everyone and for your comments
Some of these ideas are worth condsidering taking into account that not many likes to do cleaning.....
Baby sitting is quite novel.
Rudra, No have to admit I hate cleaning too. But if you do not have a good education, it would still keep the food on the table. Then again be the boss and designate the workload. Thanks for stopping by
Thanks Eileen, Screenprinting sounds interesting.
Great hub! I'll admit that my wife and I... have tried selling a number of things, most notably health products. Multilevel marketing (MLM)... stockpiling things in the basement... those were the days.
Andy xie I had a go at that years ago. But never again. No I believe you have to actually physically do something. Either make something or do something that other business do from home. Just on a smaller scale. Check out what they do and how they do it. And offer something they dont.
It may mean personal delivery, support, something to create a difference.
