Identity Protection Now
53Identity Theft Protection
Today, it is very difficult to know exactly how safe you and your identity are. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of instances when thieves are stealing your personal information and using it to their own advantage and ultimately hurting you in many different ways. When they steal your personal information they usually start making purchases in your name with credit cards that they applied for in your name. When your identity is stolen, your entire life can be turned upside down and your credit completely ruined!
For this reason, it is so important to understand what options you have to protect yourself from identity theft. By taking the right steps now, you can prevent yourself from becoming an identity theft victim and keep your name and credit in good standing.
The first step in identity theft protection starts with shredding all of your personal documents (that you don't need). This step is not only safe, but very important. There are lots of documents that you should not throw away like bank statements, medical statements, electric and gas bills, etc. There are thousands of identity thieves going through garbage to get what they need to steal your identity. This is just one form of identity theft protection that you should be aware of.
You should always monitor your credit like a hawk. There are many free credit reporting services online today like Free Credit Report or Annual Credit Report that will allow you to pull your credit and make sure that it is clean and there are no problems. You will want to do this on a quarterly basis each year. Yes, it may seem time consuming, but you will regret it if your identity is compromised.
You should also watch your mail like a hawk as well. Mailboxes are very unsecure and where you are away from the home it is all too easy for a thief to go through your mail and take something with sensitive information in it. If you are expecting something in the mail from a bank, hospital, etc. and it doesn't show up, you better call that institution and verify that it was in fact sent. Talk to your neighbors and watch each others mail boxes for suspicious activity. Everyone would appreciate a helping hand when it comes to identity theft protection.
It is just so important today to keep tabs on everything that could compromise your identity. You really need to take steps now to prevent it from happening to you or any of your family members. It is very time consuming and could hurt your finances terribly if it goes unnoticed.
