If you could have anything, what would it be?

Let’s talk about desire today!

What is your desire? Truly, if you could have anything, what would it be?

I remember watching a children’s movie about a genie and one wish that the child could have. If you knew that you could have one wish and it would be granted, what would it be?

According to scripture, it really did happen. The Lord asked King Solomon what he wanted. He told him that he would grant him anything he desired, because he pleased the Lord. Solomon in his wisdom, chose wisdom to rule his people wisely, instead of riches, honor or fame. That pleased the Lord and He gave to him not only wisdom, but riches, honor and fame. We can read about the wisdom that God gave Solomon in the book of Proverbs.

Honestly, I know I have made some really stupid requests. In fact, I thank God for not giving me those request, because if I would have gotten some of them they could of changed my life forever in the wrong direction! Thank God He doesn’t answer all our requests like we think he should.

I have been involved in a mastermind group for the past several months and we make requests to each other weekly and we honor and agree with each others requests. This has made me really think about what I’m asking for, because what if they all came to pass, how would that affect my life? There is power in agreement because Jesus said:

Matthew 18:19 “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”

So, what if you could have your desire? What would it be? The Lord said this about desire:

Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Psalm 145:19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

My desires have not always been right. I thank God for His mercy and grace and that He really does watch out for me and has my best interest at heart. Here’s what He told Jeremiah and He is telling me and you this too!

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

The Lord really does have our best interest at heart. But the question is, do we have His best interest in our heart? Do we desire Him? That’s really all He wants is us to desire Him more than anything or anyone. In Haggai 2:7, I believe this is talking about Jesus, for He truly is the DESIRE of all nations!

Haggai 2:6-9:

⁶For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

⁷And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

⁸The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

⁹The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

2 Chronicles 14:7 Therefore he said to Judah, Let us build these cities and surround them with walls, towers, gates, and bars. The land is still ours, because we sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him [yearning for Him with all our desire] and He has given us rest and peace on every side. So they built and prospered.

Notice, when they desired the Lord, he gave them peace and prospered them. It’s like what Jesus said about seeking first His kingdom. Here’s the verses regarding it. They are talking about what is really important and the attitude of our heart:

Matthew 6:19-33:¹⁹"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. ²¹For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

²²"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. ²³But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

²⁴"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Do Not Worry

²⁵"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? ²⁶Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? ²⁷Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life^[a]?

²⁸"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. ²⁹Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. ³⁰If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? ³¹So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' ³²For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. ³³But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ³

So, we can see from these several scriptures that God does want to bless us with things, but we must have our heart’s desire on Him first. Desiring what He wants and He will give us all the rest.

Isaiah 26:8 Lord, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws;our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.

In our human nature, our own desires, though we get them never satisfy us. I know, I have gotten lots of things I prayed for, and they never satisfied my heart.

I prayed and really focused in on getting to be the first woman in a top position in a company I was involved with. I did get it, but afterward I felt empty inside. It wasn't really what I was looking for. That's because those things can NEVER satisfy us! Here's what it says about our human desire:

Proverbs 27:20 Just as Death and Destruction [ Hebrew Sheol and Abaddon.] are never satisfied,so human desire is never satisfied.

This is where we are to have our desire:

Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
