If the govt wants to run health care, why not just buy up the hospitals?

You want it, take it.

When the govt dumped large sums of money to basically buy the banks and car companies, they should have gone a step further. If they feel the way to get what they want done is to take control, why not just buy up the hospitals, have a massive hiring campaign and kill two birds with one stone? They could fill those 5 million job losses within a year. They could delegate the kind of health service they feel we all need I have no idea where they'd find the money to pay the employees, but that never stopped them before. No need for Dr's offices, just show up at the hospital. Since everyone would be eligible, there would be no way to come up with a cost per visit that would be fair, so it would have to be free. No more huge medical bills or worries about affording health insurance. They could put tip cups in all the offices, and collect therm at the end of the day. Kind of pay what you want. that would be fair wouldn't it? Run 24/7, there would be plenty of need for homegrown doctors, so maybe the patient could even understand what they're being told for a change. Cause god knows you'd never be able to read anything they wrote. Needless to say, ambulances would also have to be part of the scenario, and everyone knows a govt employee would be the best person to care about getting to you in time. There could be no unions involved, the cost wouldn't work. They could change the hipocratic oath to read " Make no money" instead of "do no harm". Think of all the waiting rooms in america filled to capacity as the bored sit and watch oprah and soap opera's while they wait. the advertisers would love it. In a few years when the govt realizes they really can't afford the system they created, there will be an uproar for the old ways. But, since everyone will already be paying @60% tax rate, it'll be pretty hard to raise funds. Here's where our friends the chinese will step in. They will send cheap medical personnel to work here, to help keep us afloat so we can pay what we already owe them. But in all this there is a silver lining. We'll be one healthy happy country. Nobody will be sick again. from cradle to grave you'll be looked after medically, and with that kind of system in place, how could anyone possibly get sick? I believe the World health organization would give us a big thumbs up and every socialist here would think every day is May day.

Sorry, but one way or another the profit factor has to be removed from health care.  Profit is what drove up and continues to drive up health "insurance" premiums and drug prices.  The U.S. is the only developed country that doesn't have free medical care for all.  And we call ourselves "Leader of the Free World".  Leader of what???

I love your hubs thinking out loud~ this is a great point. The flip side to having universal health care is that we wouldn't have the money/resources for the technilogical medical breakthroughs and procedures. There are many procedures to save lives that can only be performed in the U.S.

But I am with you on this point about saving the people some money. I hate that my insurance premiums go up because other people (older, sicker, chose bad health habits) visited the doctors so much that I have to pay more. The government is speedy about controlling many other things except I haven't seen the swift action on healthcare yet- just a lot of talk.

izetti: If the economy stays the way it is healthcare reform is a dead issue. Totally unaffordable. Had they gotten something through before they gave all the stimulus money away it might have had a shot,.But now because of lack of money, they're bringing in all the usual suspects to sit diown and try to figure it out, Not going to happen where these people are the bottom line guys, the pharmaceutical ceo's, hospital ceo's insurance ceo's, who's only incentive is to be able to make money. Inviting them to come help find a way to a low cost system is laughable. All the big guys got bailed out, and the little guys are bailing out.
