Actually, you don't have to 'apply' for a copyright. As soon as you begin writing a peice of work, or drawing, or singing, etc, you automatically own a all-inclusive copyright to that work.

Now, should you decide to fully use that copyright and sell your work or license it under a copyleft license such as the creative commons license is all up to you. NOTE: Should you license your work under creative commons you still own the copyright, you just choose to automatically give permissions to redistribute (and potentially modify, should you decide) your work, you can relicense your work at any time, but people that already have the CC-licensed work will not loose their rights to your work. So think carefully about what you want to do with your work :)

to sell your work you need a license? without a license can others sell your work without your knowledge? im a bit confused about all this licensing stuff! if you post work on here what can other people do with it, if anything?

No, a license is just a way to define additional rights user have with your work (the right to redistribute it for example). You can simply distribute your work as copyrighted if you do not want to give additonal rights beyond fair use to people that purchase your work.
