If the Products Sell Themselves, Why Do They Need You?

If you’ve ever heard a sales presentation for a network marketing company, you probably remembering hearing, “The products sell themselves!” Have you ever wondered why these companies are working so hard to recruit you as a distributor if the products sell themselves?

Seems like they could just put little suits and ties on the products and send them out to knock on doors.

Or at the very least, they could run ads and put up websites marketing their products, and pull in tons of orders. After all, the products sell themselves, right?

The truth is, no product sells itself. And if you enter network marketing believing that you won’t have to persuade people that your product meets their needs, or that you won’t have to close sales and ask for orders, you’re going to be very disappointed. Because making a persuasive presentation and asking for the order are the only ways you can make money in network marketing or any other sales job.

What? Sales job? This is not a sales job; it’s network marketing! The products sell themselves! All you have to do is make presentations to everyone you know, they’ll buy because they know and like you, and you’ll be set. Right?

Unfortunately, wrong. The people who do really well in network marketing are usually the ones who understand how much impact they, personally, have on their sales, and understand that just being charming and showing the product isn’t enough.

Let’s be clear. The people, who are talking to you about the product selling itself, and not needing to sell, are probably not lying. They have been told this by people who got involved in the company before them, and this has filtered down. It has become not only the company line, but the network marketing industry line. Many people truly believe that network marketing takes no sales skills, and the people who succeed believe they’re doing it without selling.

The problem is that they then convince you, and people like you, that the product sells itself and you won’t have to sell to anyone. If you get lucky, find prospects who really want what you offer, and have a way of talking about the product that makes the sale, you can do well.

But if you don’t have any sales skills, and don’t know you need them, you can be stuck. The real problem is that your upline, and your upline’s direct upline, and so on, really believe that it doesn’t take selling.

So they talk to you about attitude and belief in the product and making more presentations. And you need all of that, but you still may not possess the two absolute requirements for making money in network marketing.

Those two things are a market of people who really want what you’re offering, and a skill at asking them to buy now, and closing the sale.

Are you about to break out in hives at the very idea of selling? Then take a minute to think about this. If you have a great product, and the people you’re talking to both need and want your product, then asking them to order now is really helping them, not hurting them.

That’s how the products sell themselves—by being so good that all you have to do is present them to the right people and ask them to make the purchase now. And that is how you really succeed in network marketing.  Now ask yourself should I promote myself or My MLM company instead?
