Illinois Driver’s Education Requirements

Driver's education is quickly becoming a reformed way of ensuring that those who are coming of age in the United States drive safely. The state of Illinois has joined the ranks of states using a graduated system of obtaining a driver's license, standing alongside many other states using this means of ensuring that young drivers truly understand the rules of the road and the resulting consequences for breaking those rules. Teens account for many accidents (and resulting injuries or fatalities) in the United States every year, and this system of gradually showing the state that the teen is truly ready for driving solo is becoming a great way of proving responsibility for both the state and the teen.

In order to drive under the age of 18, teens must meet the following requirements: driving with a parent/legal guardian at least 21 years old who has had a license for at least a year (license classification must either match or exceed the drivers) , must drive for at least 3 months with an instructional permit, must at least be enrolled in a driver's ed course, can only drive with one passenger up front and limited to the number covered by seat belts in the back, and all passengers under age 18 must wear a seatbelt.

Illinois requires that drivers be at least 15 years old, observe nighttime restrictions, practice safe driving methods, and go without any tickets/accidents for a minimum of 9 months. Those under the age of 19 are prohibited from any cell phone use except for in emergency situations. 15-year-old drivers must enroll in drivers education, complete the program, and pass both written and vision exams.
