The Largest Fan Club In The World

In the world of fan clubs, it seems that even the best of us on Hubpages, has a long way to go in terms of building a fan base. That's only if you compare the best of our best, official fan tallies -- with the largest fan club in the world, which supposedly has over eight hundred thousand members (Cassiopeia -- the fan club of TVXQ-- an Korean boy band quintet). Our hubber with the most fans is about seven hundred and ninety-eight thousand behind. That comparison brought me to reflecting upon what having a fan, and a fan club, means in terms of writing.

As often, with me, one questioning thought leads to another, so my mind was off on a race to figure out what responsibilities we have as fans, and what the object of affection of a fan really entails and means to our own fan clubs.

TVXQ - Hug No Dance

What Have You Done For Your Fans Lately?

This all goes hand-in-hand with What We Owe Our Readers-- When I started writing on hubpages nearly a year ago, the idea that I would have a fan club was very foreign to me. Let's just say I had my social doubts, as social butterfly I am not.

Early on though, I recognized that, just like in the real world to have a friend you must first be a good friend -- the same thing applies to fans. Other real world lessons also apply, like the fact that you don't want to be friends with just anyone, you also don't want to be fans of just anyone, or everyone.

In this brave new frontier of online writing, it's sometimes hard to know the social etiquette ins and outs that have few and changing boundaries. The responsibilities of being in a fan club and having a fan club, have a lot of unspoken and unwritten ideas (I hesitate to say rules, simply because just like our hubs vary dramatically in content and quality -- so do our ideas of what's the right thing to do with respect to having fans and being a fan).

Deciding Who You Want To Be A Fan Of

Choose carefully both who and what you want to become a fan of:

  • Don't be a fan, just to be a fan, in hopes that they will be "your" fan. That's just too shallow and soon others will catch on to your fanning ways. In the end, that will hurt you, and I think be reflected in your score and reputation as an author.
  • Consider (but don't let that be your only reason) picking a fan club favorite of others. Although that should never be a sole reason to join someone's fan club, there is merit in becoming a fan of a hub crowd favorite. Study the hub crowd favorite to understand why they have the fan base that they have. Chances are, it's because they write really well and contribute a lot to the hubpage community.
  • Be careful of being cheering team of one-- It's nice to be the "first" fan of someone who writes great and shows great potential. After all, we all started out with that first fan. When you choose to be the "first" then you have an obligation to pay close attention to what hubs follow, and if they are of the same caliber. Why? Sometimes someone's first hub is only bait for hidden agendas in the world of affiliate marketing, or a cut and paste work of someone else. What they write over time is far more important than that one hub wonder.
  • Be a fan of hubbers who write about your passions and interests --

What authors write about the very things that make your heart leap, your toes dance, your face smile, and are capable of bringing you to tears? Those are the hubbers who are most likely the ones you want to be a fan of.

  • Be a fan of hubbers who share your own internal value system-- Obviously, if you are easily offended by racy innuendos, liberal mindsets, and controversial subjects -- you probably shouldn't be the fan of those who write and publish pictures of such topics. You'll be a lot more satisfied, if you are true to yourself.

Know Whose Fan Club You Gave Your Thumbs Up To!

I think it all comes down to a little research vs. a whim - Find out as much information about the hubber you want to become a fan of as possible. Read their profile, read more than one of their hubs, look carefully at the topics they chose to write about. Read the comments they make. Read the comments other make on what they write. Become familiar with everything they write, that way you can identify your favorite and least favorite written works.

Don't be afraid to disagree politely and critique any hubs you are exposed to. Disliking some hubs is just as important to being a loyal fan, as liking everything they write. It keeps it real.

To me, becoming somone's fan has a social price tag, in that in a way you are "recommending" their work to others. Very often other hubbers, especially newbies, will follow by joining the same fan clubs, as a person they admire and are fans of. Everyone is jumping on the same ship, that might not be seaworthy in the long run, or perhaps is a ship going to a destination you have no interest in.

Leaving A Fan Club

I am currently the fan of 960 hubbers and that's a lot of people to keep up with. Fortunately for me, not all of them publish frequently.  Fortunately for me, I went to through the California school system when they taught speed reading all through high school in some grand experiment.

I want to thank every one of of those hubbers for enriching my life. I may not comment on everything or anything they write. I do however, read a large portion of everything many of them write. If I don't have a relevant comment, a thoughtful comment, or something to add to the topic -- don't ever think that it wasn't read. If I'm your fan, your hubs have at least got a look over and thumbs up from me.

That said, periodically, I cull my fan club lists to primarily eliminate inactive hubbers or no longer appropriate to my interest hubbers. Breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes necessary. If something occurs that causes you to want to stop being a fan of someone, don't feel ashamed. Sometimes it's nothing personal, just that what attracted you to a particular hubber isn't reflected in the content of the hubs anymore, or subject matter that they now normally write about.

Here are a few of the many reasons for bowing out of a fan club:

  • Your interests have changed
  • The hubbers content has changed
  • The hubber is no longer active on hubpages (my personal guideline is if they haven't written anything new, or shown a presence on hubpages for more than seven months -- I will remove them from my fan club list to make room for others). That doesn't mean I won't come back to them as a fan, if they start writing again.
  • The hubber's score and fan base has plummeted due to poor content, poor writing skills, or lack of content
  • You have suspicions that the hubber may be copying and pasting or otherwise plagiarising other people's work
  • Your former object of fan affection has become fan club whore (fanning everyone and anyone just to troll for fans for themselves, making it obvious that they never really read anyone's hubs in depth).

Fan Appreciation Day

So, I'm leaving one large group fan mail applause and standing ovation for the 674 fans currently in my fan club at this very moment. There are too many to list, but I do want to mention that I appreciate each and every one of you.

I know that hubbers come and go and not all of my fan club members are still active. Some of you, I am in complete awe of when it comes to your talent and find it exceedingly sweet that you like what I write too. Some of you I just love to watch grow in your writer skills. All of you make my days joyous.

I'm here! I am starting to come out of my shell a bit and comment more. I read a lot of the Hubs here, I mostly been afraid to comment. Bit by bit I am getting the hang of it. When I get the email 'just published a new Hub', I click the link, I read, and often times, comment, or not. But I am always on here, reading, and learning, laughing or crying. I am not 'a fan because of another fan', I am a fan  because I think the individuals I decide to become a fan of, actually has something important to say. Thanks for this Hub, I think that it was something that had to be said.

Jerilee - Great assessment of being a fan and having fans. This is such an interesting dynamic that I am still learning about and trying to understand. I tend to choose people who write hubs that I am interested in not because someone else is a fan, although I have found people through others.

Thanks Jerilee, you've answered a question I've been thinking about - whether it's ok to cull my list. I've been wondering whether it's good form to do that and you've set my fears at rest. :)

Jerilee ...I try to respect the fact that someone joins my fan club by responding ...It interest me to see that people will join my fan club and never even leave a comment.  I don't believe they are joining for the right reason. But I guess everyone has a different reason and approach to how and why they join a fan club.

I agree about the speed reading.  It is very important to be able to read faster to keep up.

Good points.  Thank you again for sharing some of your thoughts....and oh by the way ...I have joined your fans.  My best to your success!

Thanks Jerilee...I have been basically adding people to my fan list...whose writing I like, even if sometimes it is only the comments. Had not thought of culling the list...hmmm..but that is a possibility now. Have realised that hubpages takes up a good 3 to 4 hours of my day and some of the hubs are just copy paste stuff.

Hi Jerilee - this is an important topic - I have kept my fan base quite small on purpose and I have a few that I have decided to remove. My fan club will grow - but I want it to grow naturally, as i discover new hubbers who's work I enjoy - I also do not mind if people do not follow back. I look forward to my emails of new hubs each day - and I am selective about choosing what to comment on so that I have time to read the hub at least twice and to write something that contributes.

Thanks Am I dead yet?! You are definitely on the right track.

Thanks Triplet Mom. For a long time I was stumbling around in this area of hubpages.

Thanks Feline Prophet! It took me the better part of this year to understand why I needed to do that periodically.

Thanks gjcody! While comments are nice and desirable you'll find in time, that even the ones who don't receive comments can attract a lot of traffic. A well written hub is a well written hub. Still, among other things comments give you visibility and that gives you traffic among other things.

Thanks Purple Perl!

Thanks dianacharles! I ended up spending time getting organized to the point of scheduled maintenance on my hubs to avoid something I love (writing hubs) become a chore.

Thanks jayb23!

Thanks lphigenia! I mainly wrote it because I noticed that other than in forums not a lot was being said. I completely agree with you.

Occasionally a comment on another hub will inspire me to seek out that hubbers profile, I read 2-3 of their hubs and then check their hubtivity as this tells the whole story.

Of all the fans that I have , I do read each and every one, though do not always comment.

My dogs are my best fans. Or maybe its the other way around - yeah that sounds a lot more accurate :)

I think it is tough when you first join a community. Then you don't know anyone, and really want to get started and hooked in. You see all these groups of people in the Forum that are having fun and know each other, and you want to be a part of that. So fan spamming becomes very tempting. Kind of like being the new kid in a new school; sometimes you try too hard to make friends.

I'm thinking of writing a hub about it :)

Jerilee Wei profile image

Jerilee Wei  says:

Thanks shibashake! I think (and include myself in the number) newbies on hubpages often don't get a lot of things about hubpages until they're no longer new. In the early days, I thought I had to regularly join fan clubs without a lot of thought about why I was joining one.

I'm new and have learned quite a lot from this hub. I try to at least read some of my fans' hubs to get a feel of their writing agendas. And you're right, it's best to subscribe to those you feel are in some way connected to you either by their areas of interests or their writing styles.

I enjoyed reading your insights about fans, and I must say it is impressive you are keeping up with so many hubs. Our responsibility as fans is to pay attention and read carefully becsue after all, that person worked hard for his/her hub to become like that. Also, it is very corny to join someone's fan club just to draw attention, widening our base of fans. As for me, I read every single hub of my fan club then I judge. Sometimes it takes days to read all the hubs but I do it. Thanks dear for this hub.

HI Jerilee, you bring up some interesting points in this hub. Although, I think fanclubs are great as far as feedback is concerned, I do not take them personally. When I first started here on hubpages. I used to spend so much time reading all my fan club hubs.

Now I use Cris A's. advice and locate all the hubs I want to visit on hubitivity. If the hubs I visit are one of my fans or a fan that i am of great, but if they are not that is O.K too. I know that would make me an unloyal fan to some, but it saves my sanity and I get to spend my valuable time on hubs I really enjoy! Fanclub numbers do not impress me, clicks impress me!

LAmatadora  says:

I loved this hub and all that you brought up within it. I agree with your advice as well. We should not join fan clubs just because. But because we have a keen interest in what they write about or them as an individual. Just as we hope others become our fans based on our content of what we put out there, not just to jump on someone's bandwagon!! Loved it

Jerilee Wei profile image

Jerilee Wei  says:

Thanks Whitat! You bring up a couple of good points some of them are probably worthy of another hub on hubpages numbers vs. clicks and all the many reasons people write hubs.

Thanks LAmatadora! One of the reasons I'm a big fan of hubpages itself is that we are such a diverse group of writers and many of us take what we write seriously while at the same time taking what others write just as seriously.

Jerilee- I have to agree with this hub and I try to follow those rules as much as possible, I am guilty of becoming someone's first fan, perhaps a few times, but if I see they are just resubmitting articles from another site, I tend not to read their work, and wait for the occasional real hub, and I can tell.

I often quit people if I see they are spam hubbers and though I know I can't stop them from doing it, I don't want their activity showing up on my screen all day.

I use to see people, "respected" hubbers becoming a fan of everyone, especially during the slow hours of hubpages, as if it was a secret to their success, but I changed my settings and never know who is becoming a fan of who, especially if they are fan fishing.

In some cases, I return being a fan if I don't have the time to read their stuff, I check out their profile, activity, and make the quick decision to keep me posted and so that I may return to read their work.

Jerilee Wei profile image

Jerilee Wei  says:

Thanks goldentoad! I still believe in becoming someone's first fan, but reserve the right to quit their fan club if it becomes obvious they are not what they seemed to be at first impression.

I think the learning curve on what not to do is something many hubbers don't get for awhile as they struggle to understand how all this works. I'm still learning and expect I will always be learning.

I have a very limited list of RSS feeds of favorite hubbers that I "always" read, one of them is everything that you write.

For the most part I think most people do just join up to be a fan. Most of these do not pay attention to the club after they have and rarely does anyone go to the trouble of bowing out when they are no longer a fan.

Thanks Camping Dan! On some level you are right, but they should pay attention as continuing to be a fan of someone who no longer writes on hubpages, can and does factor into your own score in a very small way. That's just my opinion and observation.
