Importance of keeping, software and saving passwords on internet up to date
57Beta to VHS
Floppy to CD
Our technology is changing all the time that it is so hard to keep up with it. That is why we need to make sure we keep everything we have ever written or records that we treasure kept safe. Do you remember that first poem you wrote or the first picture you took?
Beta to VHS
Remember when they had two different types of videos. We all started out with Beta and then VHS became the in thing. How many people bought the new recorders and could not play their old videos.
Floppy to CD to DVD and Thumb drives
As technology improves we had to buy more equipment and upgrade from those little floppy disks to CD's, DVD's.
USB Thumb Drives
Now we have those magic little thumb drives which we can save our special things on. These can be accessed by inserting into your usb slot. When using them, remember to click on the little icon on the bottom right of your computer and wait for the safely remove sign to appear. Do not just pull it out when you finish accessing it. You will notice when you do this the power light will go off, disconnecting the power to it.

Updating Software and Programs
Years ago, I saved all my writing achievements on one of those little floppy disks. At first, I kept updating them onto the newer ones as I changed computers, as the technology changed. Then I became lazy and took it for granted that it would be safe, because the newer Microsoft windows could still read the older programs and disks.
What I forgot was that I had been using other programs like Ami pro, Write, and many more programs that I no longer have on my computer.
Some programs can still access these by going to import and convert these into Word. What will happen if they cannot read those files? Like mine, all that wonderful work will be lost forever.
I created a Genealogy Web site, years ago. Is the program I used to upload all that information still available? I used FTP to upload the index to this site. I have tried for years to access this website. I cannot remember my password, nor do I have a copy of my index for this masterpiece of mine. I used a hotmail email address and that no longer exists. Oh yes, I can still go and visit this web site but cannot change anything or update it.
Before you say, "go and ask for your password". I have been there done that, and they keep offering me the new and similar name website details. One day I will sort it out with them, hopefully. It is that inconvenience, I want to prevent happening to you.
This is why I am stressing the importance of keeping all your programs up-to-date. The computer I now no longer has a floppy disk drive. If I need something on a floppy, I have to ask one of my friends to try to access this information. Do not let this happen to you. Update everything, and keep your work saved onto the newer technology as it changes. Like resaving your work from Cd's to DVD's, because one day the new computer may not recognize a CD.
This is my Genealogy Website that I cannot access.
Simply because I no longer have records of its passwords and the web page index. Yes I have tried to get it, but no one seems able to help. I have contacted them and they keep giving me the password to my new yahoo page.

Password & Virus Protection
Never, ever let your computer remember your passwords, because you will never know who may be accessing your files.
Write them down in a book, which is not left lying about anywhere near your computer for anyone to access at their leisure. Use different passwords, where possible and combine a mixture of letters and numbers. Do not use phone or house numbers, as these are too obvious.
Use a combination, something similar to this: 135Minnie or Minnie135
Virus Protection
It is no good buying an anti virus program and installing it on your computer if you do not update it regularly. You would be amazed how many people are under the misapprehension that once installed they are safe.
This is not so as most active internet users will know. For those who are new to the internet, you need to have your anti-virus protection set to update, daily, or weekly. Which means when you are on the net, this program will automatically update, the program and protect your computer from new threats. You should also have it set toautomatically scan your computer at least once a week.

Another Tip
Often across the top of your screen a notice will come up saying, "your computer has a fault" or "Your computer is slow" or some similar message. Or you have won something. Asking you to click on that message for them to fix it.
NEVER CLICK ON MESSAGES THAT COME UP ON TOP OF PAGES WHILE ON THE NET.
More often than not it is there to get access to your computer.

In Firefox there is something called the star hack and it can be used by intruders easily to access your stored passwords, you know when you enter a password and Firefox asks if you would like it to remember the password. Don't have Firefox remember your passwords, Internet Explorer and Safari are no better.
Some great ideas Eileen. I have a file with my passwords but would never think of writing them down (ie., printing). I must do that later - many thanks for the super tips!
Geetanjali, yes it is a worry, thats for sure. We use the internet all the time and get a bit lazy from time to time. We need reminders to prompt our sluggishness.
Thanks
PJDScott, I know we shouldnt write them down. But I try to change and have different user names and passwords and I would just never remember all of them other wise. Thanks for reading this
Great info ... and one we need to read more often. Some of this we know but forget about. Computers have become such an important part of our work and lives and we forget how easy it is to lose everything because of lack of care.
John So spot on. Thats why I said I had trouble because I became lazy and didnt bother. Shocking aren't we. Thanks for reading
Great Hub Eileen, it is very true to update the records. I had some old file with IBM Lotus, transferring them to Word Office became a pain, it wasn't that easy. I use AI Roboform to keep the passwords securely, it is a wonderful program I have been using it for the last 8 years for just one low fee. They don't charge any for the updates, they are always have newer versions with new browsers.
I have been down that road so often, you would think I would grow up and learn something.
Any way I have now commenced changing all the numerous passwords to one common one, as I am constanly forgetting them. Too old, I think.
I will write the new one down and change it once a month. I have a whole world of words and numbers to choose from.
Thank you
I know that feeling so well and my memory is not as good in my old age either.
I think I suffer from that crafts disease . Thanks for stopping by
Cgull, Lotus, thats another program I used too. I forgot about that one. Yes it is so hard to keep up to date with everything. Thaks for reading
A friend I have used roboform to store passwords and other details to auto fill up forms on websites but I haven't been at ease with the concept of storing passwords and personal informations on softwares. When I have important info that needs to be stored ,I use a pendrive.Easy to carry around and more durable.
That sounds like a good idea. As long as you dont write your name to go with the passwords etc. Otherwise if you lose the pendrive and somone finds it they could still use it to get into your files. Thanks for stopping by
Yep, I could lose it but I won't because it's 16 GB and very precious to me:) but I don't store passwords , just some other important files.
I have an old diary where i write my username and password, because i just could not remember them all.....i have a few photobucket accounts on different photographs and i have to use different email address, it helps a lot when you can't remember....
Yes we cannot trust our memory for so many different passwords and user names thats for sure.
So true...I'm always a victim of the password curse and trying not to be lazy. Keyword is trying.
You are so right, we all have to make THAT EFFORT. What I hate worse is having the right password, yet it still will not let you in I experienced this recently.
But the site reset it again for me. Dont know what caused it.
Thinking up new usernames and passwords - not to mention remembering them - is a real nuisance. I tend to stick to a few, and use some variations. Don't know if that's a good idea.
The pendrive suggestion seems good. Must look into that.
Libra. I hate trying to remember passwords. Yes I think the pen drive would work and long as you do not lose it or it doesnt stop working OR.. you will be in real trouble.
Honestly I think the notebook is safer in the end as long as you dont leave it lying around for anyone to find.
Keeping information updated and stored on the most recent media nowadays is a must. Backing things up is a major pain for me (because I have a LOT to back up) but I've lost a hard drive full of important documents due to system failures, viruses, and once to a hacker. A lot of passwords went with it. And since none of my current computers have floppy drives, all those documents are now history. Very good helpful tips for avoiding those phony pop-ups too. The most annoying ones are those that take on the appearance of Norton Antivirus and tell you to quarantine your system or something. I dread to think what would happen if I accidentally clicked on such a message...
Yes everyone needs to backup. I burn all my writing articles on a disk. That way I at least have copies of all my work.
A hard disk can fail for many reasons. There is no guarantee to their lifetime. Especially when the hackers or the hidden virus destroys all our hard work through no fault of our own. Take care and backup everything. As to floppy disks. You could always ask a friend to open and burn onto a cd for you. Although you need to make sure that they check the floppy with a current version of virus checker.
Thanks for stopping by
I like that you emphasis people should keep their passwords up to date, that is a very important piece of advice. I hate it when I forget a password because I did not update it often enough. Thanks for the informative hub.
Thanks for reading this. We all get a bit slack, and yet we know the importance of keeping everything safe and up to date

Hi Eileen, password protection is a huge issue. Thanks for bringing it out. My dad recently had someone hack into his mailbox, change his password and send amail to his entire addressbook saying that he was in Phillipines and had been robbed of all his money. Friends, relatives and colleagues called him gingerly for weeks, not quite sure if the mail was a hoax or not!
Anyway, congratulations on a great hub.
