*Just a side note on the above picture:

I hate that little "paragraph" that floats around the internet in e-mails and people's profiles.

Sure, it's true! However, who in their right mind talks like that?

I hvae nveer porspuley teyepd lkie taht in my lfie.

(That took me a good minute and a half)

It just pains me to see that paragraph all over because to me, it's like saying, "Yup, research shows we don't have to be intelligent and know how to spell."

Do you ever wonder why people tend to miss your point entirely?

Have you ever had problems with spelling?

These are some questions you need to ask yourself when writing a well informed, top-of-the-line article, essay, forum post, or just about anything!

When you begin to compose your next hub, you probably have an issue you want to discuss, correct?

Unfortunately, with poor spelling, no one (with the exception of few) will be able to understand your topic. On top of that, if it’s an opinionated or argumentative article, a reader will not take you seriously if you have poor spelling.

Whether you are young or old, a good habit to get into is a habit of proper spelling.

Let me give you an example of why proper spelling is important.

“The economy begins to pick back up and now, your company is ready to begin hiring employees again. Due to time and resources, you only have the ability to interview two applicants. When you put your job posting out, you receive 250 applications.”

What would your method of elimination be?

First, I would discard the resume’s that were not equal to one page in length. (This is actually how it’s done for most positions)

Second, I would get rid of the resume’s with a spelling error.

Finally, I would discard resume’s with poor grammar.

After discarding the bulk of applications, I would make a decision based on what I have left.

As you can see, correct spelling is essential to success. Success not only for you but also for your ego.

Proper spelling is important because it allows the reader to flow freely over your writing. Have you ever noticed, when you read a book and a word is spelled wrong, you tend to stop and focus on that one word?

That interruption crashes your train of thought.

The same goes for your readers.

If you are unsure of how a word is spelled, there are several tools available. Dictionary.com or even a simple Google search will reveal the correct spelling.

This speaks for itself.
This speaks for itself.

Context, Context, CONTEXT!

Suffice to say, context is importance.

You have to be able to identify the “surroundings” of your writing- and so do your readers.

Context also relates to spelling a correct word the wrong way. There are too many rules relating to context to even begin thinking about writing on them. Just remember the difference between “Their, There, and They’re.” As well as other commonly misused terms as “Lay and Lie.” This list goes on and on!

If you are unable to make distinguishing phrases and clauses, you’re readers may as well be lost!

A common spell check error.
A common spell check error.

Remember, it's important to spell correctly, otherwise your target audience may get lost trying to decipher your mess!

Some final tips on how to nail good spelling:

1. Type your hub/blog/article/etc. in a Word processing program first. Then, use a spell-checker.

2. Use tools such as Dictionary.com or a google search.

3. Re-read your work. Just because the spell-check said this or that, doesn't mean you're good to go. Don't forget your common sense and the most powerful computer of all, your brain.

With good spelling, you're reader is able to get to the substance of your work.

A well informed, top-of-the-line forum post, huh?

Ok, I'll be serious. You asked for an honest, whether harsh or sugar-coated, opinion in forum, so I will give it.

harshness:

"Unfortunately, with poor spelling, no one (with the exception of few) will be able to understand your topic."

This is a huge exaggeration and it is not true.

As for the interview example: if you base your decision on such unimportant things as resume length or spelling you shouldn't be doing the selection. It's the symptom of extreme short-sightedness to assume that if someone is not good at something (however basic it be) he is not good at anything that would in your perception appear to require "more" from that individual.

I knew a sales rep who couldn't write a sentence without getting half of the words wrong, he couldn't drive in a big city, because he was afraid of traffic. He also was one of the best salespeople for the company, a big company and rose in the career ladder rapidly.

I think one of the most important things you have to do for your business is to select the people most suited to the jobs. If you think properly reviewing the applications is something on which you can save time, you make a big mistake. In my opinion, this very example goes well with your opinion about misspellings. In both cases, you concentrate on the form and if it's ugly you neglect the content.

Also, do you know how much harm reading this article would cause those non-native English speakers who are considering writing on hubs, but are a bit less then confident with their English skills? Well, let me tell you then: a lot.

I'm in the habit of checking everything I'm not sure of, but sometimes I just take a guess and even if I notice afterwards that I got it wrong I would not go back to correct it. Noone ever made any bad remarks over my hubs either spelling-wise or grammar-wise. In fact I enjoy twisting things a bit.

"Remember, it's important to spell correctly, otherwise your target audience may get lost trying to decipher your mess!"

Please stop calling names.

sugar-coated:

David, you have very good grammar and spelling. It is also great that you care so much for your readers and respect them so much that you do everything in your power to provide them with the best material and that you encourage others to do the same thing. Thank you for the spell-checking tips.

I agree about losing comprehension of a article if there are spelling mistakes and importance of using spell check, a dictionary and thesaurus. Great hub!
