Improve Your Writing in Five Easy Steps
66Writing skills are learned behavior. Although some people are more adept at writing than others, everyone can write if they take their time and follow some easy steps.
Step One:
Brainstorm. If you have a writing project and are stuck about what to write about, start brainstorming. Just jot down words and topics as they come to you.Soon something will pop out and you will know what to write about.
Step Two:
Research and Draft. Start writing about the topic you have chosen. Write down everything you know about it. Now write some questions you want answered. Do the research and write down what you find out. Start drafting sentences and paragraphs about the topic. Put them in order so the writing flows easily from one sentence/paragraph to the next.
Step Three:
Edit/proofread/review. This is a critical step. This is where you will need to hone your grammar and spelling skills. Have a dictionary close at hand to look up words you are not sure of. Use grammar and spell checking tools in your word processing software. In order to be effective, your writing needs to be error free.
Step Four:
Re-write and Review. In this step you will re-write your draft, paying close attention to the edits you made during the previous step. Once you think you are done with the re-write, read it ALOUD to yourself or someone else. Notice when the reading is awkward, or does not make sense. Fix those errors - perhaps a word was left out or was in the wrong place. If you are reading to someone else, have them stop you when there is a problem in clarity or comprehension. Fix the problems as you go, do not wait to the end and try and go back and find them. Read it again, aloud.
Step Five:
You are ready to publish the article, essay or piece of writing. Publishing can be done by printing it out, posting it on a blog, submitting it to an editor of a magazine, posting it on a writing website, or just saving it to a file for later use.
Good writing skills include knowing how to take your time, reviewing, drafting, reviewing again, and finally submitting to whatever form you wish to submit to. Study other writers, read articles and books, learn new words and how to use them and you will improve your writing skills.

I love this short intro to writing. I am fairly new to writing with too many ideas in my head. Being new means I have a lot to get out (or maybe that will stay that way all the time - hope so at least).
Your first sentence is the kind of sentence that will encourage any aspiring writer. Thanks for that one as well as the 5 step approach.
Good tips. I frequently re-read, edit, and publish only to go back a month later and find additional errors. Finding others to read through your work is never a bad idea. My eyes see what they want to see I'm afraid.
Reading the article aloud is a tip that is new to me and a great idea that I will incorporate with my next hub. Thanks for the primer on improving writing skills.

That's good advice. I read all of my articles and stories aloud; that's how I got into audio stories. It really is a major way of finding problems.
