Words and expressions often misused

1. Affect, Effect

Affect means to have an effect on while effect means a result, consequence or outcome.

2. All ready, already

All ready means fully ready while already means previously.

3. Allusion, illusion, delusion

allusion means an indirect reference. illusion means temporary false perception while delusion means a lasting false perception or belief about oneself.

4. A lot, allot

A lot means colloquial when used for many or much. While allot means apportion or give by some plan.

5. Amoral and Immoral

Amoral means not concerned with morality while immoral means against morality.

6. Adapt, adopt

Adapt means to adjust while adopt means to take as one's own.

7. Advice and advise

Advice means counsel while advise is to give advice.

8. Aisle and isle

And aisle is a passage between rows of seats while isle means an Island.

9. Ante, anti

Ante means before while anti means against.

10. Born and borne

Born means have one's birth while borne means before by and elsewhere.
