Although older people are most often associated with memory problems, the truth is that it can happen at any age. School children who are fed poor diets and who do not exercise have a more difficult time learning new material than children who are fed a nourishing breakfast and who are physically active. So here are some ideas to improve memory naturally for people of all ages.

Make the healthiest choices possible when buying groceries. Follow the U.S. Government's Food Pyramid as a guideline for adopting a healthy diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables are brain food and many of them hydrate the body at the same time. Eat a variety of nuts instead of just one kind. Just as different vegetables offer different kinds of nutrition, so do the different varieties of nuts. If you are on a tight budget as tens of millions of Americans are today, I have written some articles on buying cheap healthy food as well as a few other topics. The links to these articles are at the end of this article. Healthy food is an absolute necessity if you want to improve memory naturally.

Taking a brisk walk every day helps with memory in addition to physical health. The heart pumps extra oxygen to all of the body, including the brain, when we are walking at a brisk pace. Try to walk at this pace for at least 20 minutes. Don't worry if you are out of shape and can only walk a few houses down the sidewalk at this pace. Continue the walk at a slower pace until you catch your breath and then do another short spurt of brisk walking. You will gain more stamina each day because your body will be starting to tone itself and become more efficient with each bit of exercise. On days when it is snowing or too cold to go outside, put on your favorite music and dance for 20 minutes.

Lack of sleep can adversely affect memory. Try to get seven hours of sleep every night. The best sleep occurs when the body is on a schedule with going to bed and arising at the same time every day. Do not sleep in. Many people sleep in thinking it will help them to feel less exhausted. However, it throws the body off of its schedule and then it becomes harder to fall asleep the following night. This is a good way to improve memory naturally.

Multitasking is not a good thing because your thoughts are constantly jumping from one project to other projects. The best concentration occurs when we are completing a task from start to finish without interruption. This allows the brain to commit the actions to long-term memory.

Go to the doctor for a complete physical. It is a well-known fact that some common physical health problems can also cause memory problems. Two of the most common problems are undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes and undiagnosed allergies. Heart disease is another physical problem that hampers memory. Working with your doctor to restore your health is an excellent way of improving your memory and your whole quality of life.

Visit a new place or do something different in your community every month. It could be anything from a guided nature walk at the county park to visiting a museum. Stimulate the brain with new knowledge and activities.

Read every day. Make sure it is new material and not a book that you have read already. Read the newspaper, read blogs online, read a chapter in a book, and do a crossword puzzle. Every time that the brain needs to comprehend and retain new knowledge, it creates pathways that improve memory. Just as physical exercise develops the muscles, mental exercise improves the brain.

This next idea is especially important for people who keep their homes closed up all winter. Clean the house (or apartment) thoroughly to get rid of all dust particles. Then put several leafy green plants in every room. Leafy green plants remove toxins from the air and release fresh oxygen. The larger the plant, the cleaner the air. It is possible to have clean, fresh air all winter long. Note: If you have pets or very young children, then ask the garden center to help you choose plants that will not harm them if they nibble a little.

Stress is another cause of poor memory. Improve your memory naturally by getting your finances in order or dealing with whatever problem is causing the stress. There are very detailed articles below that might be helpful in this area.

It is rather easy to improve memory naturally with a few changes in diet and routine. They are well worth the effort.

Great, common sense ideas wife who saves! All good, but I found the tip about the plants especially interesting. I don't have a green thumb. In fact it think it might be purple or maybe even orange, but assuredly NOT green! But I have decided to try again. This gives me a great reason to try and make it work!

Again, you have great ideas wifewhosaves. Some I know; others are revelations, like the nuts reminder and the idea that multitasking isn't good. I tend to read a couple books at a time- one in the car, one by my bed, one during the day when I have time. Does this count as multitasking? I guess it could be considered laziness, not wanting to move one book to a new location, lol. Anyway, I feel like I have alzheimers some days. Come to think of it, what was I doing before I read this hub...

"Anyway, I feel like I have alzheimers some days."

Don't we all! Multitasking was actually designed by "efficiency experts" as a way for employers to get more work out of their employees. However, it is a proven fact that completing a task from start to finish is the better choice. By the way, I leave my book in the car also.

My husband and i talk about this all the time, about preparing for that time when our memories begin to fail us. We laugh right now, when we forget things, but the possibilities of the condition getting worse is not that far away. I will send this to him. Thanks.
