Delivering TeleHealth
Essential elements of a society require the presence and ability to provide health care services and education to the people in rural and developing areas and nations. How is this being done?
The days of packing equipment and traveling long journeys is not quite over for delivering health services to people in rural and developing countries. A human presence is still necessary but improvements in the speed of delivery, is slowly being achieved.
Using today’s available technologies such as the following are being utilized;
– Health professionals, avail their time to provide specialized teleconsulting services.
– Digital Recording Systems, allows exchange of digitized images and recording management.
– Communications, video conferencing, internet, video, digital cameras and high resolution viewers.
– Connectivity, delivery method for delivery of information via internet and satellite.
Unfortunately there exists barriers to deliver healthcare services due to civil wars, remote and isolated communities, education, language, power sources, government, cultural practices and search for methods to reduce costs and retention of services for providing specialized healthcare services, to rural residents.
Use of some of these same technologies is being applied towards delivering health education opportunities to participating community residents, in a effort to build a stronger network and overcome some of the identified barriers.
Other problems that arise in delivering quality care are areas such as the ability to provide a power source to operate the equipment. Conflict zones will find high rates of theft, suspicion and destruction and may include loss of personnel. Equipment failures, damage or upgrades may require qualified on-site technicians. High costs of delivering equipment and personnel to remote locations and the continually rising costs of new and better equipment.
Efforts to overcome these barriers may continue to be a challenge but with perseverance, ongoing research methods to reduce costs and broaden education, will assist in the further development of providing a community healthcare network for many people.
The mandates of many of our health organizations is to promote and preserve the health, social security and quality of life. Funding is available from government sources and social service programs. Sponsors can and do, provide support to overcome these challenges but connecting with more supporters would greatly assist in reducing costs for everybody. Can you help or know of anybody?
