Can someone please tell me the difference between Imus and all the rap artists out there who are selling lyrics that go way past Imus's speech.

Is there a difference?

Will all those rap cd's and videos now be pulled from the shelves?

What's fair is fair.

It has begun.

Where will it all end?

Can it be stopped is what I would like to know... and don't tell me this was all done for the sake of decency...

..it was all done in the name of decency... with no decent intent behind any of it.

It is called control.

Where will it stop????

Defending the rap artists, there is a big difference between them and audience--mainly the advertisers such as GM and Procter & Gamble who pulled their ads because they don't want to have their names associated with a racist, misogynistic jerk like Imus. Why is that? Because they sell to women, African Americans, gays and Jews, all of whom Imus has insulted at one time or another. He is a pathetic, anachronistic jerk. Good riddance!

What rap artists?

Could you be specific?

You pick 'em. I assume he was referring to the misogynistic ones who many find objectionable. I'm not a rap fan or a rap critic. They are a totally different ball game from Imus. Some of them have a lot of talent, despite the crude lyrics.

Thank you .. Ralph... you brought me back to center. I tend to get very defensive of our basic freedoms and forget that everything is directed by that allmighty dollar. I am not feeling sorry for Mr. Imus.. I never even heard his show.. tho have heard of him. He will figure out some way to make millions from this I am sure.  That certainly is no part of my concern. My bottom line concern always goes to our freedoms. Also.. I am not a rap fan by any means .. or a critic either.  I was referring to those who denigrate life in general by every means possible in words.  What advertisers back them?  All in all... we can scream and holler all we want... unless we have a public voice backed by the big media as Al Sharpton does.... we won't be heard... period.

Why not band together and boycott the sponsers that pull there ads for the Imus show.

That will show who has the power.

You are right... the double standard exists.  You had better believe that Sharpton and Jackson are on the lookout on a daily basis for that white man who will dare to denigrate a black... but if it were the other way around ... they would be screaming "RACISM".  Free speech to them is only for the black man.... and this does not mean I condone what Imus or anyone else would say that denigrates anyone... of any color.. by any color.

What do you expect Sharpton and Jackson and Gwen Ifill to do? Keep their heads down and say nothing? is there some reason why you think they shouldn't complain when a popular national radio and TV personality calls African American women basketball players whores? Where is your sense of proportion and fairness? Imus makes comments that everybody agrees are outrageous (with plenty of similar previous comments well documented) and you criticize Sharpton and defend Imus. Give us a break!

I am not defending Imus.  I am defending free speech... or... from the other side... that which is fair is fair ... what is bad for one is bad for the other.  Sharpton and Jackson and Ifill and everyone else who screamed and shouted about Imus' comment should be doing the same screaming and shouting and protesting about those rap artists or anyone else who is allowed to put that ugly language over the public airwaves.... with HUGE advertisers paying their way too.  It won't happen because the rappers are black ... 99.9999% of them. Speech is free only for a few.

For your information many of the critics of Imus are also criticising the rap lyrics which denigrate women. If you are worried so much about free speech why are you so critical of those who exercise it to criticize a jerk like Don Imus?

I guess what it all comes down to is everyone has the right to say that which they choose to say.  If someone is personally attacked by someone that person has the right to handle it through the law if they choose.  In the case of Imus' comment, the lacrosse players were apologized to and they accepted that apology.  That should have been the end of it. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson chose to make it their fight.  It wasn't theirs.  But.. they will continue on their path.. they have that right. Perhaps some day someone will be offended by them enough to call them on it.  Perhaps they too will apologize if that day comes.  If not.... perhaps they will be forced to answer in court.  That is free speech as I see it.

The only difference in Don Imus and rap is skin shade, it is okay for a hip-hop or rap to use like Hoe. Nig---, because they are darker shade of tan than say pasty colored man like Imus.

Mr. Sharpton,& Jackson with their race baiting day-in and day-out have set back "human relations" 200 years, and will more than likely try to keep it there forever. If by some miracle they see the error of their ways "Americans" all of us can coexist with little or no problems

There is a great difference what Imus and rappers do. Imus reports the NEWS and current events Rappers are entertainers/artist. I do however agree that we need to show respect for women, but let's not act like the our society held women to highest strandard until rap emerged and until rap came about no one ever disrespected women because we will be lying to ourselves. Also, rappers are not the only one who disrespect women, it's become apart of the American culture of profit making because it's said and sad that SEX SELL.
