58So what makes a great in home air purifier?
Many of the top air filters or air purifiers start with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filter. HEPA filter fabric does not look like a screen or a piece of cloth. Instead it looks like a very thin pad of fibers. HEPA filters force air through this maze of fibers; the denser the fibers the smaller the particles are that get trapped. There are three ways the HEPA filter stops particulates. First and the easiest to understand is that a particle runs into a fiber and sticks. Secondly, the particle gets within one diameter of a fiber of the HEPA filter and while it tries to pass the fiber it is gets stuck. Third, as a very small, about 0.1 micron, particle moves in the gas flow creating collisions with molecules (Brownian motion) and again happens to slide close to a fiber and get caught.
HEPA filtration was developed in 1950 by the US Atomic Energy Commission. USAEC needed something to remove small particulates that are radioactive. Since then HEPA air purifiers have been using this technology to clean the indoor facilities. HEPA products are also one of the many techniques and products used by Allergy and Asthma doctors to help alleviate the symptoms of those conditions. So this is the first component needed to create a great air purifier.
One of the newer components of a good system is the use of Ultra Violet Light or UV. UV is effective in killing organisms such as bacteria and viruses. It achieves this by mixing up the DNA of the organism. This molecular change makes the organism loose its components that make people sick. There are two wavelengths of UV light that are best absorbed and thus most effective at killing microorganisms. These are 185 nm and 265 nm. This means that for a UV lamp to be effective killing microorganisms it must emit energy in or around one of those wavelengths.
While UV technology is excellent at destroying viruses and bacteria it should not be uses without a particulate filter system ahead of the lamps. Without a particulate filter system too many microorganisms may be shaded from the light by particulates. Therefore, most air purifiers that employ UV start by filtering the air with HEPA and use the UV as a final stage of filtration. The combination of these two components makes for a more effective air purifying system. But we need to add one more component to get the most from any air purifier.
Combining an Ozone system or Ionizer helps eliminate the odors in the air. Carbon filters help with this but the Ozone system woks much better. Ozone is an unstable oxygen molecule (O3) that oxidizes anything it bumps into. This is great for removing odors, killing mold and mildew. So, if a home is flooded or has a sewage backup this technology is often used by professionals to help clean up the mess.
Many believe that Ozone systems are not good or harmful to people and animals. This may be true if the system does not have an Ozone safe certification. So be sure to do your research before buying.
