In Loving Memory: Memorial R.I.P. Tattoos
77This past year a very dear friend of mine passed away at the unfathomably young age of twenty-six, and since then I've been going back and forth with the idea of getting a tattoo to honor her memory. Only the tattoo I'd get wouldn't make sense or have any real meaning to anyone except me. After her funeral in May, when I was still reeling over the sudden shock of her untimely passing, I came across a single sheet of looseleaf paper stuffed absentmindedly in a random notebook. It must have been from the summer we were fifteen, and vacationing with her family in North Carolina. It was a page she had copied from the 1970's bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull and it quoted, in her own handwriting, "You have the freedom to be yourself--your true self--here and now, and nothing can stand in your way."
Other memorial tattoos are a lot more obvious than this idea of mine. And in my research, I've noticed that they can be grouped into several general categories.
Names & Dates
The simplest and most direct way of honoring a loved one who has passed is by listing his or her name and/or the dates of birth and death. Whether it's a small grandma scrawled in soft script on your shoulder blade, or a full back piece with first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, date of death and an accompaying quote and meaningful image, this type of memorial tattoo will always be popular.
Hearts
When you lose someone we love, you feel like your heart is breaking. And even once time has passed and the wound begins to heal, you still feel like a chunk of it is missing, like there's a hole in your heart that can never be filled. Perhaps that is why so many people opt for a simple or elaborate heart tattoo as a memorial--to ink on your skin what you can't feel in your flesh.
Winged Hearts
One variation of the standard heart tattoo is the winged heart. It combines, I suppose, the elements of love and angels (or heaven). Depending on your pesonal religious beliefs, a tattoo of this type can represent the idea that your loved one has now earned her wings and is with the other angels, watching over you from the other side. It could also mean that love is the only thing that gives you wings, or that love lifts you up where you belong.
Portraits
As I mentioned in my hub on Tattoo Ideas: Portraits, getting a portrait tattoo is often a very moving and emotional experience. This emotional experience is doubled when the portrait tatoo is intended to honor a loved one who has passed away. Portrait tattoos are quite complex, and require the patience and dedication of a seasoned tattoo artist who pays attention to detail and hopefully has a good deal of experience with this specialized type of artwork.
Religious
Religious memorial tattoos can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. One of the most common images is that of a cross or crucifix, either with or without the loved one's name or birth/death dates printed in a banner wrapped around the cross. Praying hands, particularly praying hands clutching a rosay if you're of the Catholic faith, are also seen frequently. Angels are sometimes depicted looking down from heaven, smiling, or even hugging a tombstone.
R.I.P.
Finally, the last type of memorial tattoo is the simply stated, oldest sentiment in the book: R.I.P. which stands for Rest in Peace. This is, after all, our greatest hope. We pray that our loved ones who suffered through sickness, heartache, or depression, are now in a place where they can hurt no longer. We pray that they are resting peacefully as they watch over those they left behind on earth. We pray that they are resting before they find another womb to grow in, and come back to us so that we may meet again, if not in this life then certainly in the next.

My Mom passed away in 05, I have a tattoo of a cross with a ribbon wrapping around it, it says the year she was born, mommy, and then the year she died. My grandpa passed away in april last year. I got a in rememberance tattoo. It is of a cardindal(his schools mascot) that is sitting on a rose vine. It has a banner on top that says R.I.P. and one on bottom that says grandpa Hiley. I wanna incorporate the dates in with it but i dont wanna take away from the tattoo... any sugguestions??

My sister commited suicide last year and I took a card she gave me for my 17th birthday and had inher handwriting "to my baby sister, with love, Tiffany" tatooed on my left forearm. Hello, January 23rd this year (09) I lost my only brother at the age of 30 from an accidental death. I have been lost it seems like ever since, I need some direction on what kind of tatoo I should get in remembrance of him and how much he meant to me. My brother died april 15. My family has NO idea what happened to him, but it was by far the most traumatic, worse, and hardest experience of my life. He was one of the closest people to me. My whole family has taken this very hard and I feel like everywhere I go he's with me. I want to get a tattoo of something that makes me think of him. He had many tattoos, but one in particular he had on the back of his neck that read "Hurt", from the NIN and Johny Cash song. I have one piece of paper that says "Chris", so I thought maybe get that but idk where or what else, he died at the age of 23, but merely one month and 5 days short of his 24 b-day.

My grandfather died three months ago. Him being sick and his death have made such an impact on my life and that is why I'm getting a tattoo today. It's the title of a French song which translated means two different things that both remind me of my grandpa. It's a fairly simple design but I don't want it too big. Maybe an idea for others?

my fiance and father to be was shot and killed in a drive by 3 years ago. we were supposed to get married two months later and our daughter was born in october. when he died i was so numb, i was terrified of needles when he asked me to marry him n i said yes the next day he got my first and middle name tattooed on him i said i would do the same but was too scared dont get me wrong i had a bunch of piercings but a tattoo was scary. the day after i left the hospital i went to a tattoo shop with my best friend and got a in loving memory tattoo with a cross and ribbon going though it with his name, it was the first time i stopped crying and a constant reminder of him being with me always. last year i got tiare flowers attatched to it, a flower that has many meanings from purity to starting fresh. many people judge me for getting the tatt but im sso glad that i did its beautiful and tells a story of a part of my life. i recommend it for people who need closure or a symbol so youll never forget.

one of my best friends passed away june 15th of this year after a long and horrible battle against cancer... i'm not sure what im going to get to remember him yet. his favorite band was the beatles, and his favorite song was blackbird, so i was thinking of getting a blackbird with r.i.p. then his name around it, and then a little ribbon on one side of it for cancer, and then his birth and death dates on the other side, and a little broken heart on the bottom with the words i love you under it
oh yeah, and the blackbird would have a little red "M" for monster energy drinks, because that symbolizes the day we met..
or, i just had a thought. i could get everything i just said, but instead of one blackbird, i could get a cherry tree filled with them, because after he died, we planted two cherry trees for him.

Well my suggestions for the individuals who lost an infant or an unbor child is one I actually just thought of. If you have a recent sonogram picture you should get that portrait with the words " just one more day" under it. I think it would be a very special tattoo and it has alot of meaning behind it. To al..... You should get a picture of a man holding a little girls's hand walking threw the gates in heaven. under the man's name you put your dad's DOB, DOD and under your sister's name you put her DOB, DOD. I think that would be a beautiful tatoo.

One of my really good friends just died on thurs in a hiking accident. He was only 17, and im trying to come up with ideas to honor him.
I need some help, I lost my grandmother unexpectedly febuary of 2009. I really miss her and i want to get a tattoo to remember her forever. I dont know what to get, and this will be my first tattoo, so can anyone help?

over the past four years ive lost four friends to suicide. it seems each year i go through the same heartache. i got a tattoo which says gone but not forgotten to show they will always be in my heart.
My best friend Sebastian died last week of a virus. Doctors still haven't figured it out.
He was 18 on his way to 19. I want to get a tattoo in his rememberence, because he took such good care of me, and I loved him so much. We used to call him Seabass, so I'm thinking of getting a fish, with his dates, and name.
I'm still not sure though.
Life seems so hard without him around.

My best friend committed suicide after he got so drunk that he couldn't take it anymore. Watch the alcohol, it will take over your mind!!!!!!!!!!!
