Texas Holdem...

If you're wondering why professional poker players are so successful in winning millions of dollars, well, it's not just luck. There's a great deal of skill involved in playing Texas Hold'em. Whether you're taking a trip to the casino, playing with friends, or on of the internet poker site, it takes know how and learning how to read a player to be a winner.

In the end, poker is gambling, so victory is never guaranteed, just wished for. Nevertheless, if you're armed with the knowledge and the know how, you'll improve your chances of coming out on top and being the big winner.

Texas Hold'em is the most popular forms of poker to date. It's a game that has all the elements that it so enjoyable to play with friends, at the casino's or online. There are various opportunities to bluff, gamble, get lucky or unlucky, use a strategy that works for you, and possibly win large sums of money. Who can beat that?

Practice, practice, practice....

Any good poker player will tell you to be a winning player you must think about many different things throughtout the entire game. I will let you know the three most important psychological concepts that can be the difference between bluffing and getting bluffed: tilts, tells, and being able to read anothers players hands and situations. If you apply yourself and with the right amount of practice and skill, you can become a master "bluffer". Let's get started by explaining a tilt.

Titling.....

Players often make mistakes because something, a bad beat, a smart mouth, upsets them emotionally, this is called a tilt or going on a tilt.  For example, players can often have a "favorite hand" but can lose to an opponent who hits that one miracle card, this is termed a bad beat. The "favorite hand" player can become so emotionally upset that they begin to make bad decisions. Sometimes a thing that can put a players on a tilt is when an opponent is loud, obnoxious, rude, or otherwise annoying, a "smart mouth". Players on a title often react by playing poorly. The most common way being betting with weaker hands than usual, like a 2/3 offsuit, for example. It's important to pay attention when one of your opponents is on a tilt, it is even more important to your game to realize when you are heading towards a tilt and figuring out how not to let your emotions get the better of you.

Recognizing a tilt....

This can be easier for some than others. If you keep detailed records of your playing sessions, you may be able to see a pattern that leads to your tilting. Avoid paying weaker hands than you usually wouldn't play after taking a couple bad beats.

Once you come to the realization you are going on a tilt, you must try to avoid it. Sometimes you can avoid tilting by simply suppressing you emotions and concentrating on the game at hand. If you are too upset, it may be best to simply walk away, or quit the game. Or you could try getting up and taking a short break to clear their head before returning, a bathroom break is always a useful excuse. You may find that fresh air helps. It's important to try different things when you start tilting until you find the method that works best for you and brings you out of your "funk".

However, when one of your opponents is on a tilt, remember a few things to try to take advantage of the situation. Players on a tilt are often unpredictable, especially on their starting hand. Entering the pot with a weaker hands than usual is the most common sign players are on a tilt. Of course, players may realize what they are doing and correct it at any time. Also, accomplised players may try to convince you they are on a tilt when, in fact, they are not. Deception in poker is a frequent occurrence.

Avoid playing weak hands in order to take advantage of you opponent who is on a tilt. You may wind up getting get sucked in and wind up being on a tilt yourself.

Tell, tell signs.....

Sometimes a players' hands will shake when they are placing a bet if they have a very strong hand, at the same time, other players' hands shake when they are bluffing. Some players act strong when they are have a weak hand and act weak when they have a strong hand. These players often bet aggressively by practically throwing their chips into the pot or even towards you in hopes that their show of strength will make you fold out of the hand. This can also be a sign of weakness, as if they are literally "throwing" their chips away

Players who have a solid starting pair in Hold'em, like AA or KK, will sometimes closely watch each other place their bet as if making sure nobody shorts the pot, this is one reason you see so many "professional" players wearing sunglasses at the table. These players have already "won" the hand in their minds and want to make sure that they have a chance to collect every bet they can. There are even some players who hold their breath when they have a strong hand.

There is an unlimited number of possible tells, it's human nature to react in different ways when excited, and everyone is different. Picking up these tell tell signs on your opponents can be done only by paying close attention to detail. Practice concentrating on your opponents as much as possible. You also have to practice not giving away your "tells". Learning to control your emotions under many different situations takes practice, but it is very important since poker is a game of information, and you don't want to give any more to your opponent than you have to. If you are able to read "tells" in others, as well as in yourself, your game will improve dramatically.

Reading a player....

Reading hands and situations is a skill that can be mastered only by practice and experience. Over time, you will start to read players because they fall into patterns and become predictable. For instance, some players will immediately raise, they usually have strong hands like AA, KK, and AK. These players automatically reveal too much information about their playing styles to their opponents by repeatedly playing this way.

You must constantly look for betting patterns. Many players will bet the same type of hands the exact same way every time. If you pick up on their patterns, it will improve your game tremendously. One lesson you should learn is to occasionally vary your own playing style so your opponent can't easily read your hands. Making a play that is not your normal "style" is only really necessary about 5 percent of the time to keep your opponents on their toes. This, however, is only necessary in a game when accomplished players are paying close attention. Poor players rarely notice anything you do out of the ordinary, so play simple straightforward poker against them.

Poker is a basically a thinking man's game. To be successful, you must stay one step ahead of your opponents at all times. If you practice the tips and suggestions I have given you, you will be winning big pots in no time.
