Inbound cutomer service jobs are usually calls that are transferred to you (the worker) via a call center from a customer or possible customer. You will probably have to answer questions or resolve account issues. Some ibound customer service jobs are also sales - where the customer already knows they want to make a purchase and are just calling to complete the order. It is never cold-calling or telemarketing.

Now many companies are offering inbound customer service jobs from home - making them telecommuting positions. While it is a great opportunity to supplement your income from home, there are a few important factors to take into consideration and a few equipment requirements in order for you to be able to complete this type of poisition.

There are Some Basic Requirements

Just like any job, if you are interested in applying for a telecommuting inbound customer service job, it is important to know that there are some basic skill and equipment requirements. You should have some customer service experience; however, not all companies require it and some offer start-up, or entry level, positions.

Most companies do require you to have some basic equipment and/or a home office setup in order to complete the job. Below are some of the general equipment items or minimum requirements you may need. Equipment and home office set up requirements vary by company - you will need to check the requirements of each company for an inbound customer service telecommute job via their website.

System

  • Usually a PC - some companies do not work with Macs.
  • Monitor: Usually a 15" monitor, minimum.
  • Operating system: Windows XP or Windows 2000 - some do not allow Windows Vista
  • RAM: 128 MB minimum, but usually 256 MB is recommended
  • Processor: AMD Anthlon, AMD Duron, Celeron, or Pentium III or better
  • Processor Speed: 800 MHz
  • Graphic Resolution: 1024 x 768, 16 bit
  • Audio: Sound card with speakers and/or headset (sometimes needed for training)

Computer Requirements

Internet

  • Many companies require you to have a high-speed (DSL, Cable) internet connection. Some work with satellite connections, but most (if not all) don't accept dial-up connections.
  • Internet browser: many companies require you to have Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 or higher. It is free to download or upgrade your internet browser. Some companies may accept other browsers, but most work with IE.

Home Office Requirements

It is important that your room or work area is free of noise or distractions. If you have small children, dogs, or a TV, make sure they can not be heard in your work area. Not only will the noise disrupt our call or ability to hear during your phone call, it is very unprofessional (and usually untolerable) to have a noisy background.

Some companies allow you to use a cordless phone, some require a corded phone - so be sure that your telephone set up is compatible to your work environment. A second phone line is usually a requirement for many companies. Some companies allow you to have a VOIP phone conection. You will also most likely need to buy a handsfree headset for your phone. (I'm not sure if they make them for corded phones.) Preferably, a noise cancelling one.

You will most likely be spending a fair amount of time in your home office as most jobs require a minimum of 20 hours per week. Since you will be spending so much time here, you will want to not only have an effecive environment, but also a comfortable and safe one.

Since you will be spending several hours here, it is recommend you set up a desk (or feasible table) with your computer, phone, good lighting, and a comfortable chair! Make sure the desk or table you choose to work on is sturdy and has enough "desk top" space.

Finally, be sure that your work environment and all your equipment is kept organized, protected, and safe. Keep liquids away from your computer so that you don't accidentally spill it on the keyboard or laptop and risk damaging it. Keep cords and wires tucked away. Wrap up your wireless headset and tuck it away in a drawer or specific place on your desk. If neccessary, get a desk calendar and notebook or some other method to help you keep track of your schedule, hours worked, and any notes or reminders you may need to take during calls. You may also want to have an area where you post important phone numbers or other information you will need to reference frequently when doing calls.

Important to Note

Before applying for any of the following positions, you need to make note of or remember a few things...

  • Always view FAQs for each company before applying to get answers to important questions.
  • Pay rate varies by company or position. Some companies pay per-minute, per-call, or hourly. Each one varies; some offer all three.
  • Many of the companies require that you choose a schedule and stick to it. Upon being hired, they will usually let you know what hours are available for you to work and you then set your schedule. Some companies allow flexibility with your schedule, but for the most part they want you to stick to the same schedule daily and weekly.
  • Note that some places charge a fee - for background checks. Most of them do not charge you this fee until you have been interviewed and/or are pending hiring. I tried to note which companies charge, but again, please read FAQs on each site.

  • Many of the companies do not offer health, medical, or similar benefits. (I have tried to make note of the few that do.)
  • You are generally considered an independent contractor (or self-employed). Because of this, you will usually need to keep track of any business expenses which you can write off at the end of the year when you do your taxes. Any equipment purchased, phone bills paid, etc. can usaully be used as tax write-offs, so save your receipts on any related expenses.
  • Most positions are only available in US, some in selected states.

Thanks all for your comments. I had a very hard time finding legitimate work at home and after searching for years compiled this list. It's all free online it's just hard to find, which is why I wrote this aticle. To make it a little easier for others like me and so we can stop getting ripped off!! Some of the sites offer jobs in the UK, if they do I believe I've noted it that they are worldwide, but most of this is for the US, sorry.

I've been working in a call center for the last 3 years in FL but I would much prefer to work at home. While my company does offer this, the programs are not Mac compatible. Has anyone ever heard of a virtual call center company that allows Macs. I've checked out about 30 w/ no luck! Help!

@Haute Coco - thanks, I tried!

@free--annualcreditreport - There's not much available in Canada that I know of. If you check out some of the links to inbound customer service telecommuting jobs above, most of the sites will say whether or not they are accepting aps from Canada.

@Kristin - Not sure about Mac's. Your best bet is to just check the sites above, but it looks like you may have already done that! Sorry, wish I could help more. Do check out my other telecommuting articles - there are some great links there for other telecommuting jobs that allow Mac's.

To Kristin, I would add that if you want to work from home for one of these companies, it might be worth purchasing a PC and learning to use it, if you are unfamiliar with it, as these companies have very specific requirements that you must meet before they will consider hiring you. It will be advisable for you to adapt - they can't do so due to infrastructure and quality assurance issues.
